Alyce Sophia Adams

BioDr. Adams is the inaugural Stanford Medicine Innovation Professor and Professor of Health Policy, Epidemiology and Population Health and of Pediatrics (by Courtesy). She also serves as Associate Chair for Health Equity and Community Engagement for Stanford Health Policy, Associate Director for Health Equity and Community Engagement in the Stanford Cancer Institute, and as Associate Director for Stanford Impact Labs. Focusing on racial and socioeconomic disparities in chronic disease treatment outcomes, Dr. Adams' interdisciplinary research seeks to evaluate the impact of changes in drug coverage policy on access to essential medications, understand the drivers of disparities in treatment adherence among insured populations, and test strategies for maximizing the benefits of treatment outcomes while minimizing harms through informed decision-making. Prior to joining Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Adams was Associate Director for Health Care Delivery and Policy and a Research Scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, as well as a Professor at the Bernard J. Tyson Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. From 2000 to 2008, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Medicine (formerly Ambulatory Care and Prevention) at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. She received her PhD in Health Policy and an MPP in Social Policy from Harvard University. She is a member of the Board of Directors for AcademyHealth and a former recipient of the John M. Eisenberg Excellence in Mentoring Award from Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Michael Baiocchi

BioProfessor Baiocchi is a PhD statistician in Stanford University's Epidemiology and Population Health Department. He thinks a lot about behavioral interventions and how to rigorously evaluate if and how they work. Methodologically, his work focuses on creating statistically rigorous methods for causal inference that are transparent and easy to critique. He designed -- and was the principle investigator for -- two large randomized studies of interventions to prevent sexual assault in the settlements of Nairobi, Kenya.
Professor Baiocchi is an interventional statistician (i.e., grounded in both the creation and evaluation of interventions). The unifying idea in his research is that he brings rigorous, quantitative approaches to bear upon messy, real-world questions to better people's lives. -
Shalmali Bane
Ph.D. Student in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, admitted Spring 2021
BioShalmali Bane is doctoral student in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. She is a trainee with the Center for Population Health Sciences, in the Stanford School of Medicine. She works with Dr. Suzan Carmichael on examining social determinants of reproductive health and perinatal outcomes. Shalmali grew up in India and received a biology degree from Stanford, with a focus in Neurobiology. Prior to graduate school, she was a healthcare consultant with the Analysis Group, where she focused on survey research, literature reviews, and budget impact modelling. She is passionate about equity and inclusion initiatives and serves on her departmental JEDI committee. She hopes to meld all of these experiences together in her current work: applying rigorous epidemiological methods to study how factors like socially determined race/ethnicity and socio-economic position impact the experiences of birthing persons.

Brian T. Bateman

BioBrian T. Bateman, MD, MSc is the Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine.
Before coming to Stanford, Dr. Bateman served as the Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Chief of the Division of Obstetric Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and as Co-Director of the Harvard Program on Perinatal and Pediatric Pharmacoepidemiology in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Bateman’s scholarship focuses on the study of medication safety in pregnancy and on predictors and management of maternal morbidity. To address questions in these areas, Dr. Bateman and collaborators at Harvard helped pioneer the use of advanced epidemiological techniques applied to large, routinely collected healthcare utilization data. This research has been funded by multiple R01 grants from the NIH and by grants from the FDA and has been published in leading clinical journals including NEJM, JAMA, BMJ, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Pediatrics, JAMA Psychiatry, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Bateman’s bibliography contains over 300 publications. This research is frequently cited in clinical reviews and guidelines and has prompted both the FDA and EMA to make labelling changes to medications regarding use in pregnancy. Dr. Bateman is also a founding member of the International Pregnancy Safety Study Consortium (InPress) which is a collaborative effort between investigators from the US and each of the five Nordic countries to pool data for studies evaluating the safety of medications.
Dr. Bateman currently serves as Chairperson of FDA’s Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committee after having previously served a 4-year term (2015-2019) as a voting member of this Committee. He was a technical advisor for the recent revision of the Joint Commission’s pain management standards. He has served on expert panels and workshops sponsored by the National Academy of Medicine, the FDA, the NIH, the CDC, and the Department of Health and Human Services, and on multiple grant review committees for the NIH and other funders. He is an Editor for the journal, Anesthesiology, and the textbook, Chestnut’s Obstetric Anesthesia: Principles and Practice.
Dr. Bateman’s work has been recognized by a number of awards including his selection in 2017 by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology as the Gerard Ostheimer lecturer and in 2018 by the American Society of Anesthesiologists as the James E. Cottrell Presidential Scholar Awardee, which is given to one clinical-scientist each year within 10 years of initial faculty appointment for accomplishment in research.
Faculty development and mentorship has been a central focus of Dr. Bateman’s career. He has mentored numerous trainees who have gone on to outstanding academic careers. Throughout his career, he has worked particularly hard to advance the careers of women and underrepresented minorities and to create environments where everyone is welcomed and has an opportunity to advance.
Dr. Bateman is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate Yale College and received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and was awarded the Janeway Prize for the highest achievements and abilities in the graduating class. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and residency and chief residency in anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed a Masters in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. -
Jade Benjamin-Chung

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research aims to improve population health by creating high quality evidence about what health interventions work in whom and where, when, and how to implement them. Most of our research is focused on environmentally-mediated infectious diseases, including malaria, diarrhea, soil-transmitted helminths, and influenza. Our focus is on improving the health of vulnerable populations from low-resource settings, both domestically and internationally. We use a variety of epidemiologic, computational, and statistical methods, including causal inference and machine learning methods.

I am interested in the effect of the autonomic nervous system on cerebral blood flow regulation.
I intend to combine regional anesthetic techniques and noninvasive bedside cerebral blood flow monitoring to understand the effect of the sympathetic system on cerebral blood flow.
A secondary goal is to apply this new knowledge to investigate whether cervical sympathetic blocks improve long term neurological outcomes. -

Nathaniel Breg
Postdoctoral Scholar, Health Policy
BioNate Breg is a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University's Department of Health Policy and at the Palo Alto Veterans Health Administration. He earned his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University and his BA at Tufts University.
His interest in health care providers intersects with questions from labor economics and industrial organization. Nate's current research investigates how providers respond to incentives, how they decide to adopt new technology, and how health care services affect local economies and local health. He is a 2020-2021 recipient of the Fellowship in Digital Health from CMU's Center for Machine Learning and Health.
He previously worked at RTI International on evaluations of government health care initiatives, prospective payment systems, and health care delivery quality measures, employing econometrics and other quantitative methods. His clients included the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Health and Human Services Department’s Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE).

Andres Cardenas

BioI am an environmental epidemiologist and serve as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Stanford University. I joined the faculty at Stanford School of Medicine in 2022.
My research focuses on characterizing molecular and epigenetic biomarkers and the extent to which these alterations contribute to disease risk throughout the life course. My group utilizes computational approaches to investigate environmental chemical mixtures, biological aging markers and fetal epigenetic programming. We have several studies looking at chemical and non-chemical stressors in early-life and subsequent health including; neurodevelopment, obesity and immune function.
My research examines the intersection of chemical and social environments in shaping health and disease. -
Suzan L Carmichael, PhD, MS

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Carmichael is a perinatal and nutritional epidemiologist and Professor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Her team is committed to finding ways to improve maternal and infant health outcomes and equity by leading research that identifies effective leverage points for change, from upstream 'macro' social and structural factors, to downstream clinical factors (eg, related to care and morbidities) through a collaborative research approach that integrates epidemiologic approaches with community engagement and systems thinking.
Exposure themes include social context, nutrition, care, environmental contaminants and genetics. Outcome themes include severe maternal morbidity, stillbirth, birth defects, and preterm delivery. She is particularly interested in understanding the intersectionality of these varied types of exposures and outcomes and how they interact to impact health and health disparities, for the mother-baby dyad.

Isabella Chu
Associate Director, Data Core, Center for Population Health Sciences
BioI have been with the Stanford School of Medicine since 2001. I received my MPH in Public Health from UC Berkeley in 2011 and joined The Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences (PHS) in 2016. My research interests focus on social and environmental determinants of health, particularly how the built environment, especially housing and transportation policy promotes equitable access to the economy, education and other opportunities.
I am the Associate Director of the Data Core at PHS. The PHS Data Core specializes in hosting large, rich, high risk data which are used by hundreds of researchers to answer questions in precision and population health. My primary responsibilities include overseeing governance and regulatory matters, data security, privacy and ethics and collaboration with the team of research scientists and engineers who have built the PHS Data Core platform. This platform and model have been replicated in several universities throughout the United States.
Prior to joining PHS I initiated the Stanford Research Registry (SRR) which grew to over 4,000 members within two years and greatly facilitated research participation for both individuals with chronic disease as well as healthy controls in clinical trials and qualitative research. The SRR served as the foundation for the Patient Engagement Portal initiative which allows for bi-directional communication with the entire Stanford patient population and the general public for the purposes of recruitment for research, reporting research findings and allowing research participants to better understand the impacts of their service on the advancement of science. -

She also has experience as a medical assistant at a 3-physician internal medicine practice in Burlington, Vermont. Ellie enjoys running, cycling, and cross-country skiing.

My post-doctoral work is divided between domestic policy research, which focuses on analyzing cost and care variation, and global oncology projects, which concentrate on implementation and care delivery.

Catherine Duarte
Instructor, Epidemiology and Population Health
BioDr. Catherine Duarte is an IDEAL Provostial Fellow based in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health at Stanford University’s School of Medicine. She received her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health and her Master of Science in Social and Behavioral Sciences from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. As a doctoral student, Duarte was selected to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health Policy Research Scholars Program - a national leadership training program bringing together scholars from across academic disciplines whose applied research seeks to contribute to building healthier and more equitable communities. Duarte’s work specifically focuses on examining how education and legal system policy and practices may shape racial health inequities throughout the life course. In so doing, her work aims to contribute to systems-level interventions designed to support health equity and wellbeing for collective thriving.

Ramzi Emanuel Dudum

Masters Student in Health Policy, admitted Autumn 2022BioDr. Dudum is a cardiologist, public health specialist, and outcomes researcher working to develop novel risk prediction methods and implementation strategies to create practices and systems that allow for reductions in cardiovascular disease. He completed a Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins concentrating in epidemiology and biostatistics and a Doctorate of Medicine at George Washington University. He is currently a candidate for a Masters of Science in Health Policy at Stanford.
He completed internal medicine residency training as part of the Osler Medical Service, where he worked under the mentorship of Drs. Roger Blumenthal and Michael Blaha to study improving cardiovascular risk prediction and coronary artery calcium. Given his focus on population health and implementation science, he also helped launch and refine risk adjustment tools and implemented guideline-directed medical care pathways. During his time there, he was recognized for his clinical acumen and dedication to patient care.
He came to Stanford for his cardiovascular medicine fellowship and continued research in coronary artery calcium under the mentorship of Drs. David Maron and Fatima Rodriguez while also conducting cardiovascular health implementation science work under the mentorship of Dr. Steve Asch. He serves as the co-investigator of a prospective randomized trial testing the effects of notification of incidental coronary artery calcium on statin initiation rates among those with and without cardiovascular disease (NCT 05588895). He has worked with hospital leaders to implement digital health and artificial intelligence tools, creating the infrastructure for the prospective use of AI-algorithms on radiology studies. As a preventive cardiologist and population health specialist, he leads efforts in the preventive cardiology section related to improving cardiovascular health. -
Raj Fadadu

BioRaj Fadadu is currently in his final year of medical school at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine and interested in pursuing a career in dermatology.
He has experience conducting epidemiology research projects, particularly related to environmental exposures and skin diseases (e.g., atopic dermatitis and psoriasis) and epigenetics (e.g., EWAS and epigenetic age acceleration). He also holds leadership roles in local and national organizations involved in climate change advocacy and education, working to improve community and patient health. In addition, he is a strong advocate for health equity and increasing access to medical care for people experiencing homelessness and has implemented innovative projects to do so while serving as an Albert Schweitzer Fellow and Director of student-run free clinics in Berkeley, CA. For his impactful work, he was named an Environmental Education "30 Under 30" in 2022 and received the Excellence in Climate Leadership Award from the American Public Health Association in 2022 and Emerging Physician Leader Award from Health Care Without Harm in 2021.
He received a M.S. degree in Health and Medical Sciences (with concentrations in Environmental Research and Healthcare Management) from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health and received a B.A. degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley (graduated with Highest Distinction and Research Honors). -
Mohsen Fathzadeh
Genomic Scientist, Epidemiology and Population Health
BioMohsen Fathzadeh, a seasoned Medical Geneticist, has dedicated over 20 years to genomic science. His academic journey began at Yale University, where he completed his Ph.D. thesis under Prof. Arya Mani, focusing on a genetic form of familial Metabolic Syndrome. From 2015 to 2021, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University, specializing in Cardiovascular Medicine, Psychiatry, and Public Health Sciences. During this tenure, he conducted comprehensive functional genomic analyses under the mentorship of esteemed professors.
Mohsen's collaborative efforts with Merck & Co., Inc. led to the identification of a gene regulator associated with body fat distribution. His research scope also includes the characterization of genes linked to insulin resistance and obesity. Recently, he explored the (epi)genetic link between newborn body fat distribution and high maternal gestational glucose levels, focusing on mother-child cohorts from diverse and underserved communities.
His primary goal is to utilize his findings to enhance our understanding of the genes and evolutionary pathways influencing healthspan and age-related diseases, thereby improving patient lives.
After completing his postdoctoral research in 2021, Mohsen spent two years in the biotech industry, specializing in genetic testing and variant assessment. He is currently affiliated with Stanford's Population Health Center, studying epigenetic disease mechanisms in mother-child cohorts.
Outside his professional life, Mohsen leads an active lifestyle and enjoys learning about diverse cultures. -
Zahra Fazal
Masters Student in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, admitted Autumn 2022
BioZahra Fazal, from Morogoro, Tanzania, is pursuing a master’s degree in epidemiology and clinical research at Stanford School of Medicine as a Knight Hennessey scholar. She graduated from the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada with a bachelor’s degree with distinction in Global health and nutrition as a Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow scholar. Zahra plans to apply her graduate degree towards researching health inequities amongst under-served populations and advocating for data-driven policy change within Sub-Saharan Africa. During her undergraduate degree, Zahra founded a club for first-generation and low-income (FGLI) students, launched a podcast and hosted Canada’s first conference for FGLI students bringing together universities and education ministers across Canada. Inspired by her advocacy, UBC established a scholarship for FGLI students. Zahra was also a research assistant on a patient-partner project at Arthritis Research Canada investigating COVID-19 outcomes in patients with immunosuppression within Canada. Zahra has received the UBC Dean Blythe Eagles Medal, UBC International Community Achievement Award and is a 2022 Rhodes East Africa finalist.

Paul Graham Fisher, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsClinical neuro-oncology: My research explores the epidemiology, natural history, and disease patterns of brain tumors and other cancers in childhood, as well as prospective clinical trials for treating these neoplasms. Research interests also include neurologic effects of cancer and its therapies.

Josefina Flores Morales

BioJosefina (she/her/ella) is a Propel Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health in the School of Medicine with Dr. Mathew Kiang’s lab. Her research is about health and socioeconomic inequities across the life course. She is interested in diverging outcomes across race/ethnicity and documentation status. Josefina earned her B.A. in psychology with a public health minor from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She pursued her doctoral education in sociology at UCLA as well. Her doctoral studies were supported by the Health Policy Research Scholars program, a program by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Rebecca M. Gardner
Ph.D. Student in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, admitted Autumn 2022
BioI’m a second-year PhD student in Epidemiology & Clinical Research with an emphasis on maternal health and well-being during the postpartum period and over the life course. My current research is focused on antepartum and postpartum depression prevalence trends, the policy impact of insurance expansion on postpartum healthcare utilization, the ‘Hispanic Paradox’ in the context of maternal health outcomes, and the effect of social support on reducing postpartum mental health morbidity. Ultimately, I would like to design and implement multimodal interventions to reduce postpartum depression morbidity, thereby promoting the well-being of mothers, children, and families. I am also interested in studying the connection between adverse pregnancy outcomes and long-term outcomes such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Before starting a PhD, I was a biostatistician in the Quantitative Sciences Unit at Stanford for four years where I co-authored over thirty publications, collaborating with clinicians on various domains including developmental behavioral pediatrics, reproductive endocrinology & infertility, oncology, and clinical trials. I completed my MS in Statistics at Brigham Young University in 2016, where I collaborated with cardiologists to develop a new approach to diagnose rheumatic heart disease in pediatric patients in Samoa for my Master's thesis.
In my free time, I moderate a book club, work on my Spanish, and spend time with my husband and our two young children. -

BioPascal Geldsetzer is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health and, by courtesy, in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. He is also affiliated with the Department of Biomedical Data Science, Department of Health Policy, King Center for Global Development, and the Stanford Centers for Population Health Sciences, Innovation in Global Health, and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine & Imaging.
His research focuses on identifying and evaluating the most effective interventions for improving health at older ages. In addition to leading several randomized trials, his methodological emphasis lies on the use of quasi-experimental approaches to ascertain causal effects in large observational datasets, particularly in electronic health record data. He has won an NIH New Innovator Award (in 2022), a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub investigatorship (in 2022), and two NIH R01 grants as Principal Investigator (both in 2023). -
Paul-Andre Genest
Adjunct Professor, Epidemiology and Population Health
BioDr. Paul-André Genest is an Assistant Director and Publisher at the American Chemical Society where he is responsible for the management of roughly a third of the ACS journals portfolio and Editorial Development team. Since 2016, he is an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University where he co-teaches a yearly course on scholarly communication (BIOS 292: Preparation and Practice: Scientific Communication & Media). Previously, he worked as a Publisher and Senior Editor at Wiley and as an Associate Publisher and Scientific Editor at Elsevier. Dr. Genest has a BSc (Biology) degree and a MSc (Microbiology-Immunology) degree from the Université Laval in Québec City, Canada, and a PhD (Molecular Parasitology) from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He held two postdoc research positions at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, The Netherlands before transitioning to the scholarly publishing industry.

Nicole Gladish

BioDr. Gladish received her PhD in Medical Genetics from the University of British Columbia investigating how early life adversity impacted DNA methylation changes over the life course. At Stanford she is a postdoctoral fellow researching social adversity and impacts on health disparities combining epigenetic, genetic and epidemiological data to obtain a better understanding of how negative health outcomes develop and improve ways to identify vulnerable populations for more effective interventions.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy current research focuses on understanding the genetic and environmental etiology of complex disease and developing and evaluating efficient screening strategies based on etiological understanding. The areas of my research interests include statistical genetics, molecular epidemiology, cancer screening, health policy modeling, and risk prediction modeling. I have developed various statistical methods to analyze high-dimensional data to identify genetic and environmental risk factors and their interactions for complex disease.

Cellas Ari'ka Hayes
Postdoctoral Scholar, Epidemiology
BioCellas is currently a postdoctoral fellow/Propel scholar at Stanford University in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences in a laboratory utilizing longitudinal data analysis and neuroimaging modalities to understand the aging brain, neuropathology, cognition, and Alzheimer’s Disease. Postdoctoral experience includes using R, Linux, and Python to perform data preprocessing, multivariate statistical analysis, and applying novel models for longitudinal continuous outcomes. Cellas received his Bachelor’s in Biology (2015-2019) and Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences with an emphasis in Pharmacology (2019-2022) from the University of Mississippi. As a doctoral candidate, his research focused on using both in vitro and in vivo approaches to further elucidate how neuroendocrine modulation specifically insulin-like growth factor-1 alters learning and memory performance along with ischemic stroke outcomes. Skills gained during doctoral training included in vitro cell culture, pharmacological experimental design of both in vitro and in vivo studies, development of transgenic mouse models, a wide array of rodent behavioral paradigms, stereotaxic surgery, photothrombosis, and numerous ex vivo cellular, molecular, and microscopy techniques.
My primary interests lie at the intersection of aging, neurodegenerative disease, and using longitudinal epidemiological data sets to investigate hypotheses. All around neuroscientist seeking sci-comm, industry, and academic opportunities to strengthen skills to become an independent investigator. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy background and expertise is in the field of computational biology, with concentration in health services research. A key focus of my research is to apply novel methods and tools to large clinical datasets for hypothesis generation, comparative effectiveness research, and the evaluation of quality healthcare delivery. My research involves managing and manipulating big data, which range from administrative claims data to electronic health records, and applying novel biostatistical techniques to innovatively assess clinical and policy related research questions at the population level. This research enables us to create formal, statistically rigid, evaluations of healthcare data using unique combinations of large datasets.

Irogue I Igbinosa

Masters Student in Epidemiology and Clinical Research, admitted Autumn 2022BioIrogue Igbinosa, MD, is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician at Stanford University. She is currently an NIH Women's Reproductive Health Scholar (K12), and her research focus includes iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy, severe maternal morbidity and mortality, and health equity.
She graduated from the University of Houston and earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. She subsequently completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at Louisiana State University School of Medicine Baton Rouge. After residency, she was an AAMC-CDC Public Health Policy Fellow able to serve in the CDC Emergency Operations Center and contribute to research for healthcare providers regarding the management of the Zika virus in pregnant persons. She completed her Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship at Stanford in 2022.
Dr. Igbinosa is passionate about community-engaged approaches to bridge gaps in evidence-based care for birthing communities and collaborates with local and national policy committees to raise awareness for reproductive justice in maternal health. Her motto is to listen first and serve with compassion. -

Other Tech - Graduate, School of Medicine - Grad Student SupportBioJlateh Vincent Jappah is a PhD Candidate in Health Policy (Health Economics) at Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. His research interests intersect between methods that enhance access to the social determinants of health and the provision of appropriate and timely healthcare services, with the aim of reducing avoidable morbidity and mortality and improving overall health and well-being, especially for underserved and vulnerable populations.
Jlateh contends that although health insurance and access to healthcare services are important elements in the health production function, other structural and socio-economic factors collude to either foster or erode health. As such, he has a keen interest in public policy, economics, medicine, global public health, maternal and child health, and a curiosity to understand those socio-political and institutional forces that shape health and well-being. He is also interested in machine learning and artificial intelligence in healthcare.
In addition to the United States, Jlateh has lived and worked in several countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Esther M. John
Professor (Research) of Epidemiology and Population Health and of Medicine (Oncology)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. John has extensive expertise in conducting population-based epidemiologic studies and has led as Principal Investigator multiple large-scale studies, including multi-center studies with a study site in the San Francisco Bay Area with its diverse population. Many of her studies and collaborations investigated cancer health disparities. Her research has focused on the role of modifiable lifestyle factors (e.g., body size, physical activity, diet), hormonal factors, early-life exposures, genetic variants, and gene-environment interactions; differences in risk factors by race/ethnicity, breast cancer subtypes, and prostate cancer subtypes; risk factors for familial breast cancer and second primary breast cancer, as well as prognostic factors related to survival disparities.
As Principal Investigator, Dr. John has led a number of studies conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area, including:
- the Northern California site of the Breast Cancer Family Registry, an on-going prospective multi-generational cohort of over 13,000 families established in 1995 at six international sites;
- the Northern California site of the WECARE Study that investigates risk factors for second primary breast cancer;
- the California site of the Breast Cancer Health Disparities Study that investigated genetic variability and breast cancer risk and survival in Hispanic and non-Hispanic white populations in the context of genetic admixture;
- the Breast Cancer Etiology in Minorities (BEM) Study, a pooled analysis of risk factors for breast cancer subtypes in racial/ethnic minorities;
- the San Francisco Bay Area Breast Cancer Study, a population-based case-control study in nearly 5,000 Hispanic, African American and non-Hispanic white women that investigated the role of modifiable lifestyle factors and other risk factors;
- the San Francisco Bay Area Prostate Cancer Study, a population-based case-control study of lifestyle and genetic risk factors for advanced and localized disease.
These studies collected and pooled extensive data and biospecimens and continue to support numerous ancillary studies, collaborations and international consortia and have contributed to a better understanding of cancer risk and survival in racial/ethnic minority populations.
Dr. John is also a founding PI of the LEGACY Girls Study, an on-going prospective cohort established in 2011 that investigates early life exposures in relation to pubertal development outcomes, breast tissue characteristics, and behavioral and psychosocial outcomes in the context of having a family history or breast cancer. -
Deborah Kado

BioDr. Kado is a board-certified, fellowship-trained doctor specializing in geriatrics. She serves as co-director of the Stanford Longevity Center. She is a professor of medicine and chief of research for the Geriatrics Section in the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population Health. She is also the Director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) at VA Palo Alto Health Care System.
For each patient, Dr. Kado prepares a personalized care plan. Her objective is to help all individuals maintain the best possible health and quality of life as they age.
A special interest of Dr. Kado is bone health. She has conducted extensive research focused on osteoporosis and the related disorder hyperkyphosis.
Since joining the UCLA faculty in 2000, she has received continuous funding for her research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
She has over 100 peer-reviewed publications of her research findings in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Osteoporosis International, Journal of Gerontology and Medical Sciences, Journal of Geriatric Oncology, Nature Communications, and other peer-reviewed journals.
In 2007, she defined hyperkyphosis as a new geriatric syndrome. Her discoveries in this field were first featured in the American College or Physician’s premier internal medicine journal Annals of Internal Medicine. Later, they also appeared in a dedicated chapter in UpToDate, the electronic resource providing evidence-based clinical decision support for doctors worldwide.
Prior to coming to Stanford, Dr. Kado practiced at UC San Diego where she started a dedicated osteoporosis clinic for patient care and research. She later broadened her research interests beyond musculoskeletal aging to study other aging-related topics such as the gut microbiome in older men and the effects of cancer treatments on aging in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
Dr. Kado is a California native. She trained at UCSF and UCLA. She also earned a Master of Science degree in epidemiology at the UCLA School of Public Health, sponsored by the John Hartford Foundation.
She is a member of the American Geriatrics Society, American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, Gerontological Society of America, The Endocrine Society, and other professional organizations. She co-chairs the NIH National Institute on Aging Workshop for the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research. She also participates in the Bone Health Working Group of the Society for Women’s Health Research. -
Neil Kamdar

Biostatistician 3, Center for Population Health SciencesBioI am a health services researcher and applied methodologist focused on clinical and policy applications in disabilities research, women's health, general surgery, and mental health analyses. My focus has been on leveraging Medicare, private payer claims (Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI), MarketScan, OptumInsight, etc.) and Medicaid to understand cost, utilization, and outcomes. This work has been foundational in the development of large-scale studies on vulnerable populations that have typically been under-served or insufficiently studies in the health services research domain.
I serve as the Assistant Director of Analytics at the Center for Population Health Sciences at Stanford, focused on the development of the American Family Cohort (AFC) data, a primary care registry that provides substantial insights into clinical outcomes, utilization, and a particular focus on COVID-19 and Long COVID outcome analyses. Ancillary work would involve the development of research collaborations throughout Stanford Medicine with the interest in creating scholarship across the many domains of the Center for Population Health Sciences.
In addition to this role at Stanford, I also maintain an appointment at the University of Michigan, Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, where I serve as an analytic lead in the development of administrative claims and electronic medical records analyses leading to publications in general and subject-specific journals.
I have been successful in being funded as a co-investigator with several federal and foundation agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Neilsen Foundation focused on traumatic spinal cord injury, among many others. I have also provided foundational analyses in the development of Clinical Quality Initiatives (CQIs), which are state-wide initiatives aimed at improving the health and efficiency of hospitals and institutions, with a focus on maternal and fetal medicine in the State of Michigan. -

Fellow in Graduate Medical EducationBioI am an infectious disease fellow and post-doctoral researcher in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine, the Luby Lab, the Center for Innovation in Global Health, and the Woods Institute for the Environment. I worked on the Covid19 outbreak for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in 2020, and the Monkeypox outbreak for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health in 2022-23. I also served on the WHO-commissioned Independent Panel on Pandemic Preparedness and Response's research team investigating early global spread of Covid19, and helped with policy-writing for the Biden-Harris campaign on reducing Covid19 in schools. I am currently the Principal Investigator of the following studies: a cluster-randomized controlled trial investigating whether air filtration and ventilation can reduce spread of Covid19 in low-income homes in the Bay Area (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT05777720); piloting a low-cost rural surveillance system for detecting spillover of zoonotic diseases in Western Kenya.
I completed my internal medicine residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in the Global Health Equity program, and have been working in global health since 2008. I co-edited the book, "Protecting the Health of the Poor" (December 2015, Bloomsbury Publishing, https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/protecting-the-health-of-the-poor-9781783605521/); and co-founded Longsleeve insect repellent, winner of the 2018 Harvard Business School New Venture Competition and finalist in the 2019 Harvard President's Challenge. Mathew Kiang

BioI am an assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. My research lies at the intersection of computational epidemiology and social epidemiology. Methodologically, my work revolves around combining disparate data sources in epidemiologically meaningful ways. For example, I work with individual-level, non-health data (e.g., GPS, accelerometer, and other sensor data from smartphones), traditional health data (e.g., survey, health systems, or death certificate data), and third-party data (e.g., cellphone providers or ad-tech data). To do this, I use a variety of methods such as joint Bayesian spatial models, traditional epidemiologic models, dynamical models, microsimulation, and demographic analysis. Substantively, my work focuses on socioeconomic and racial/ethnic inequities. For example, recently, my work has examined inequities in COVID-19 vaccine distribution, cause-specific excess mortality, and drug poisonings. I have an NIDA-funded R00 examining equitable ways to improve treatment for opioid use disorder across structurally disadvantaged groups and am Co-I on a NIDA-funded R21 examining ways to use novel data sources (such as social media) to predict surges in opioid-related mortality.
