Shahab Mirjalili
Physical Science Research Scientist
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsBroadly, my research lies in the intersection of fluid mechanics, scientific computing, and machine learning. My work aims to develop and use computational methods to provide a predictive understanding of complex flow problems, including those involving multi-physics couplings and multiphase dynamics across a wide range of scales and Reynolds numbers. In this vein, I develop physically consistent models, robust numerical schemes, and high-performance computing (HPC) software that enable high-fidelity simulations of flows involving complex multi-physics effects. These developments build upon my novel work on modeling multiphase flows and my high-performance multiphase, multi-physics software. In addition to simulations, I use asymptotic analyses and machine learning (ML) to construct reduced-order models (ROMs) that can be used for engineering analysis, control, design, and especially optimization. I am interested in a wide range of applications involving impactful problems. In particular, I am passionate about improving the predictive understanding of multiphase flows in:
- Propulsion and energy conversion/storage
- Additive manufacturing processes
- Biophysical systems
- Environmental flows -
Reginald Mitchell
Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Emeritus
BioProfessor Mitchell's primary area of research is concerned with characterizing the physical and chemical processes that occur during the combustion and gasification of pulverized coal and biomass. Coals of interest range in rank from lignite to bituminous and biomass materials include yard waste, field and seed crop residues, lumber mill waste, fruit and nut crop residues, and municipal solid waste. Experimental and modeling studies are concerned with char reactivity to oxygen, carbon dioxide and steam, carbon deactivation during conversion, and char particle surface area evolution and mode of conversion during mass loss.
Mitchell’s most recent research has been focused on topics that will enable the development of coal and biomass conversion technologies that facilitate CO2 capture. Recent studies have involved characterizing coal and biomass conversion rates in supercritical water environments, acquiring the understanding needed to develop chemical looping combustion technology for applications to coals and biomass materials, and developing fuel cells that use coal or biomass as the fuel source. Studies concerned with characterizing coal/biomass blends during combustion and gasification processes are also underway.
Professor Mitchell retired from Stanford University in July 2020, after having served over 29 years as a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department. -
Paul Mitiguy

BioFrom Milton MA and LaSalette, Paul did his undergraduate work at Tufts University and his mechanical engineering graduate work (Ph.D) at Stanford under Thomas Kane.
As a young adult, Paul worked summers landscaping, farming, and construction, then worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, NASA Ames, and MSC.Software, was a consulting editor for McGraw-Hill (mechanics), and has been a consultant for the software, robotics, biotechnology, energy, automotive, and mechanical/aerospace industries.
He developed force/motion software used by more than 12 million people worldwide and translated into 11 spoken languages. These software applications include Interactive Physics, Working Model 2D/3D, MSC.visualNastran 4D (now SimWise), NIH Simbody/OpenSim, and the symbolic manipulators Autolev/MotionGenesis.
Paul currently works on Drake, open-source software developed by TRI (Toyota Research Institute) to simulate robots and autonomous vehicles. In his role as Lead TRI/Stanford Liaison for SAIL (Toyota's Center for AI Research at Stanford), he facilitates research between TRI and Stanford.
At Stanford, Paul greatly enjoys working with students and teaches mechanics (physics/engineering), controls/vibrations, and advanced dynamics & computation/simulation. He has written several books on dynamics, computation, and control (broadly adopted by universities and professionals).
Paul is highly appreciative of support from Stanford alumni/CEO Dave Baszucki who developed internationally acclaimed physics, engineering, and gaming/educational software, including Interactive Physics, Working Model, MSC.visualNastran, and Roblox.
He is very grateful to students, co-instructors (TAs), faculty, and staff. -
Parviz Moin
Franklin P. and Caroline M. Johnson Professor in the School of Engineering
On Partial Leave from 10/01/2023 To 06/30/2024BioMoin is the founding director of the Center for Turbulence Research. Established in 1987 as a research consortium between NASA and Stanford, Center for Turbulence Research is devoted to fundamental studies of turbulent flows. Center of Turbulence Research is widely recognized as the international focal point for turbulence research, attracting diverse groups of researchers from engineering, mathematics and physics. He was the founding director of the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford.
Professor Moin pioneered the use of direct and Large Eddy Simulation techniques for the study of turbulence physics, control and modelling concepts and has written widely on the structure of turbulent shear flows. His current interests include: Computational physics, Physics and control of turbulent boundary layers, hypersonic flows, propulsion, flow control, large eddy simulation for aerospace applications and aircraft icing. -

Michael Ortiz

BioProfessor Ortiz received a BS degree in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. From 1984-1995 he held a faculty position in the Division of Engineering of Brown University, where he carried out research activities in the fields of mechanics of materials and computational solid mechanics. In 1995 he became Professor of Aeronautics at the California Institute of Technology where he is Frank and Ora Lee Marble Professor Emeritus of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering since his retirement in August of 2020. He served as the director of Caltech’s DoE/PSAAP Center on High-Energy Density Dynamics of Materials from 2008-2013. He concurrently holds a Bonn Research Chair in the Institute for Applied Mathematics of Bonn University and is Adjunct Professor and Distinguished Timoshenko Fellow in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Professor Ortiz has been a Fulbright Scholar, a Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Scholar at Caltech, Midwest and Southwest Mechanics Seminar Series Distinguished Speaker, an elected member-at-large of the US Association for Computational Mechanics, a, Alexander von Humboldt Senior Fellow at the University of Stuttgart and the Max-Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig, and a Hans Fischer Senior Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Technical University of Munich. He is a Fellow of the US Association for Computational Mechanics, elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and an elected Member of the US National Academy of Engineering. Professor Ortiz is the recipient of the 2002 IACM International Computational Mechanics Award, the 2007 Ted Belytschko Medal of the USACM, the inaugural 2008 Rodney Hill Prize conferred every four years by the IUTAM, the 2011 Zienkiewicz Prize of the Spanish Association for Numerical Methods in Engineering (SEMNI), the 2015 Timoshenko Medal of the ASME and the 2019 John von Neumann Medal of the USACM.. Professor Ortiz has served in the University of California Office of the President Science and Technology Panel, the Los Alamos National Laboratory T-Division Review Committee, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Predictive Science Panel, the Sandia National Laboratories Engineering Sciences External Review Panel, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Chemistry, Materials, Earth and Life Sciences Directorate Review Committee, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Engineering Directorate Review Committee and the National Research Council Panel for the Evaluation of QMU. He has been editor of the Journal of Engineering Mechanics of ASCE and of the Journal of Applied Mechanics of the ASME and is presently editorial advisor of the Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids and member of the editorial boards of the Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering and of Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering Journal.

Jasmin E. Palmer

BioJasmin earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Controls, Instrumentation, and Robotics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Jasmin is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University and conducting research with faculty supervisor Professor Allison Okamura in the Collaborative Haptics in Robotics in Medicine (CHARM) Lab. Jasmin’s Ph.D. research centers around human-computer interaction and haptics, the science of and relating to the sense of touch. Developing technology that provides beneficial haptic feedback to human operators requires a multi-pronged and interdisciplinary approach. Her work leverages concepts from psychology and neuroscience to understand human perception, experimental design, and statistical analysis, and also applies her engineering background in dynamic modeling of physical systems and mechatronic system development in order to develop novel designs for wearable devices. The goal of her thesis is to develop an adaptable simulation framework that provides realistic haptic feedback for humans to perform various dexterous manipulation tasks in dynamic virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) environments using wrist-worn tactile devices. Jasmin wants to become an inspiration for other women of color to pursue careers in STEM fields. Jasmin also enjoys composing music, playing the flute, and studying foreign languages.

Aakash Patil
Postdoctoral Scholar, Mechanical Engineering
BioDr. Aakash Patil is a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University working on deep Learning-assisted predictive modeling for high-dimensional spatio-temporal problems, particularly for turbulence in fluids. At the Center for Turbulence Research he works with Prof. Beverley McKeon as a part of a grant funded by the US Office of Naval Research. His Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics from Mines ParisTech - Paris Sciences et Lettres University led to the development of innovative deep learning methods for nonlinear dynamical systems and the creation of high-performance CPU-GPU frameworks for deep learning-assisted simulations. He was a co-founder of GreenPanda in 2014, a webtech startup catering SMBs, and exited in 2019 after 5 years of successful inclusion of SMBs in India's digital ecosystem.
His expertise includes building deep learning foundation models for high-dimensional spatio-temporal problems, scientific computing, machine learning operations, and quantitative analysis for complex scientific and engineering challenges. Marco Pavone

BioDr. Marco Pavone is an Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University, where he directs the Autonomous Systems Laboratory and the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford. He is also a Distinguished Research Scientist at NVIDIA where he leads autonomous vehicle research. Before joining Stanford, he was a Research Technologist within the Robotics Section at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He received a Ph.D. degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010. His main research interests are in the development of methodologies for the analysis, design, and control of autonomous systems, with an emphasis on self-driving cars, autonomous aerospace vehicles, and future mobility systems. He is a recipient of a number of awards, including a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Barack Obama, an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, a National Science Foundation Early Career (CAREER) Award, a NASA Early Career Faculty Award, and an Early-Career Spotlight Award from the Robotics Science and Systems Foundation. He was identified by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) as one of America's 20 most highly promising investigators under the age of 40. His work has been recognized with best paper nominations or awards at a number of venues, including the European Conference on Computer Vision, the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, the European Control Conference, the IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems, the Field and Service Robotics Conference, the Robotics: Science and Systems Conference, and the INFORMS Annual Meeting.

Peter Pinsky
Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Emeritus
BioPinsky works in the theory and practice of computational mechanics with a particular interest in multiphysics problems in biomechanics. His work uses the close coupling of techniques for molecular, statistical and continuum mechanics with biology, chemistry and clinical science. Areas of current interest include the mechanics of human vision (ocular mechanics) and the mechanics of hearing. Topics in the mechanics of vision include the mechanics of transparency, which investigates the mechanisms by which corneal tissue self-organizes at the molecular scale using collagen-proteoglycan-ion interactions to explain the mechanical resilience and almost perfect transparency of the tissue and to provide a theoretical framework for engineered corneal tissue replacement. At the macroscopic scale, advanced imaging data is used to create detailed models of the 3-D organization of collagen fibrils and the results used to predict outcomes of clinical techniques for improving vision as well as how diseased tissue mechanically degrades. Theories for mass transport and reaction are being developed to model metabolic processes and swelling in tissue. Current topics in the hearing research arena include multiscale modeling of hair-cell mechanics in the inner ear including physical mechanisms for the activation of mechanically-gated ion channels. Supporting research addresses the mechanics of lipid bilayer cell membranes and their interaction with the cytoskeleton. Recent past research topics include computational acoustics for exterior, multifrequency and inverse problems; and multiscale modeling of transdermal drug delivery. Professor Pinsky currently serves as Chair of the Mechanics and Computation Group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford.

Friedrich Prinz

BioFritz Prinz is the Leonardo Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy. He also serves as the Director of the Nanoscale Prototyping Laboratory and Faculty Co-director of the NPL-Affiliate Program. A solid-state physicist by training, Prinz leads a group of doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, and visiting scholars who are addressing fundamental issues on energy conversion and storage at the nanoscale. In his Laboratory, a wide range of nano-fabrication technologies are employed to build prototype fuel cells and capacitors with induced topological electronic states. We are testing these concepts and novel material structures through atomic layer deposition, scanning tunneling microscopy, impedance spectroscopy and other technologies. In addition, the Prinz group group uses atomic scale modeling to gain insights into the nature of charge separation and recombination processes. Before coming to Stanford in 1994, he was on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. Prinz earned a PhD in Physics at the University of Vienna.

Bernard Roth

BioRoth is one of the founders of the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford (the d.school) and is active in its development: currently, he serves as Academic Director. His design interests include organizing and presenting workshops on creativity, group interactions, and the problem solving process. Formerly he researched the kinematics, dynamics, control, and design of computer controlled mechanical devices. In kinematics, he studied the mathematical theory of rigid body motions and its application to the design of machines.
