Sakaria Laisene Auelua-Toomey

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsRacism involves a complex interplay between social contexts and individual thoughts, feelings, and actions. My research highlights how social contexts disproportionately affect marginalized groups’ meta-beliefs (i.e., beliefs about others’ beliefs), and how those meta-beliefs subsequently influence marginalized group members (but not advantaged group members) to disengage with those contexts. Moreover, I highlight how changes to social contexts can change how marginalized groups think about those contexts, often leading to greater racial equity. My research integrates the social psychological literature in social identity threat and systemic racism, employs diverse methods (e.g., surveys, field experiments, archival analyses, natural language processing) and includes participants from diverse backgrounds to uncover how changes to social contexts can reduce racial inequity across a variety of domains (e.g., scientific publications, interracial relationships, workplace settings, healthcare).

My interests lie in genetics, neurobiology, and cancer biology. I plan to apply my passion for these topics to develop innovative therapies and technologies to better treat diseases like cancer. Having grown up in Vietnam—a country that grapples with many serious diseases—my work is fueled by a genuine passion for improving lives and giving back to my community. Rhana Hashemi

BioRhana Hashemi is a Ph.D. student in Social Psychology conducting social-belonging and stereotype threat research with Dr. Greg Walton. She is focused on improving the lives of students who use drugs by understanding and repairing the relationship they form with their schools and authority figures. Rhana hopes to design interventions that promote connection and reduce bias, as alternatives to school suspension. She holds a M.S in Community Health Prevention Research from Stanford School of Medicine and a B.A in Social Welfare with honors from UC Berkeley. Previous research has focused on cognitive dissonance theory, prevention messaging, social media, and adolescent substance use.

Kate Petrova

Research Asst - Graduate, PsychologyBioKate Petrova is a first-year PhD student at the Stanford Psychophysiology Laboratory. Her research encompasses two broad domains: basic questions about the nature of emotion as well as applied research at the intersection of affective science and social psychology. Her current interests include how different ways of paying attention to and labeling affective experiences shape emotion regulation. She is also curious about how people regulate their own and others’ emotions in naturalistic social interactions. Kate’s other interests include empathic processes in virtual communication, lay theories of emotion, and the development of emotion regulation across the lifespan. Kate earned her A.B. in Psychology from Bryn Mawr College and spent several years working on the Harvard Study of Adult Development before joining SPL.

Emily Schell

Ph.D. Minor, PsychologyCurrent Research and Scholarly InterestsAs a psychologist in a School of Education, Emily utilizes an interdisciplinary and mixed methods approach to study cultural (mis)matches between students’ norms and the norms of their U.S. higher education institutions. She does so by pursuing three interconnected lines of research, examining (1) advising and teaching approaches that create cultural matches or mismatches for immigrant and international students, (2) cultural taxation of students of color seeking to remedy cultural mismatches with their institutions, and (3) the relationship of cultural (mis)match to students’ development of purpose. This research has enabled her to make both theoretical and applied contributions, bridging gaps between social and cultural psychologists hoping to understand specific domains and impacts of cultural mismatch and higher education leaders hoping to make their communities more inclusive. Her dissertation, entitled "Culturally Responsive Advising: A New Avenue for Supporting Immigrant and International Students," is an example of these contributions.

Teaching Asst-Graduate, PsychologyBioShawn is a PhD student working with Anthony Wagner in the Department of Psychology. He leverages neuroimaging (fMRI and scalp EEG) and real-time biofeedback with pupillometry to investigate the neural mechanisms driving the relationship between moment-to-moment fluctuations in preparatory attention and episodic remembering in cognitively healthy young and older adults.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am interested in value computation and representation in the brain, as well as the individual differences in this process in healthy people and people with mood disorders. I am also interested in how reward processing interplays with subjective feeling states such as mood and motivation.
