Her current research projects include the 2020 Facebook Election Research Project and an online game to combat vaccine misinformation. Stefan Oliver Bassler

BioStefan is a Bridging Excellence Postdoctoral Fellow in the Petrov lab at Stanford University and in the Aulehla & Steinmetz labs at EMBL (2025-now). He is fascinated by how evolution can be used to probe the genomic plasticity of biological systems. During his PhD with Nassos Typas at EMBL supported by the Joachim Herz Add-on Fellowship, he mapped the Genomic landscape of resistance evolution by performing high-throughput resistance evolution of the genome-wide KO library in E. coli. He discovered that evolvability genes constrain resistance evolution through gene-gene and gene-gene-drug interactions. In his postdoctoral work, he will Assess the inter-kingdom conservation of lifespan variants evolved in yeast.

Simon Beaudoin
Graduate Visiting Researcher Student, Political Science
BioSimon Beaudoin is a Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University, a PhD student in Political Science at the University of British Columbia, and a SSHRC Doctoral Fellow. His scholarship lies at the intersection of International Relations, Political Theory, and Earth System Science. Integrating insights from both social and natural sciences and applying systems thinking, his research examines the architectures of global environmental politics and synergies within socio-ecological systems.
Simon holds a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Politics and International Studies from the University of Cambridge and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in International Studies from the University of Montreal. His masters were funded by the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship, the Cambridge Trust, and the Mackenzie King Scholarship. During his master’s degrees, he also received a Frontenac Fellowship to study at Science Po Paris and an Excellence Scholarship to conduct field work in Geneva. His social and academic contributions were recognized by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec’s Youth Medal.
Simon spent the last decade living, studying, and conducting research in Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. His most recent work features peer-reviewed publications on global environmental politics, biodiversity, climate, and ocean governance in the Canadian Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Multilateralism, International Negotiation, and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. He is also the lead author of a forthcoming book on global biodiversity governance. -
Luca Bellodi

BioLuca Bellodi is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University. His current research focuses on American political institutions, specifically the interaction between politics, bureaucracy, and populism, and its consequences for the quality of government.
In Bellodi’s primary line of research, he studies politicians’ incentives to control the behavior of bureaucratic agencies, lawmakers’ reliance on bureaucratic expertise, and the role of bureaucracy in shaping the political agenda. He introduces innovative measurement strategies that combine natural language processing techniques and machine learning to address novel questions in the study of oversight, rulemaking, and the use of information in the policymaking process.
In a related line of research, Bellodi investigates why politicians adopt populist behaviors and examines the consequences of populism for government performance and the quality of bureaucracy.
Luca Bellodi holds a PhD in political science from University College London. Before joining Stanford, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Bocconi University in Milan. -
Louis Berrios

BioLouis joined the Peay lab in 2021 after completing his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina. His research primarily focuses on the factors that govern the spatial distributions of bacteria and fungi as a function of microbe-microbe and plant-microbe interactions. From genomes to phenomes, Louis fuses both top-down and bottom-up experimental approaches to determine the genetic architecture that undergirds plant microbiome assemblages across landscapes.

Callie Chappell
Postdoctoral Scholar, Biology
BioCallie Chappell is a Ph.D. candidate in Ecology and Evolution with the Fukami Lab. Callie is an ecologist and studies how genetic variation influences how ecological communities change over time. Her dissertation research focuses on nectar-inhabiting yeast and bacteria. With a background in bioengineering, Callie is particularly interested in the conservation and policy impacts of gene editing wild organisms and the cascading impacts that genetic variation can have on ecological and evolutionary processes.
Outside of the lab, Callie leads several groups that work in the intersection of science and society. Callie was the 2020-21 President of Stanford Science Policy Group (SSPG), a chapter of the National Science Policy Network and student organization that engages scientists with policy on the local, state, national, and international level. Callie also co-leads BioJam, an education program that collaborates with high school students and community organizations from low- income communities in the Greater Bay Area of California. BioJam participants and organizers learn together about bioengineering and biodesign through the lens of culture and creativity. Callie is also a professional artist and scientific illustrator. Callie has participated in several fellowships at the intersection of science and society including the Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (2021), Graduate Ethics Fellow with Stanford’s McCoy Center for Ethics in Society (2019-2020), BioFutures Fellow with the Stanford Bio Policy and Leadership in Society (Bio.Polis) Initiative (2020-2021), and Katherine S. McCarter Policy Fellow with the Ecological Society of America (2020). -
Yunwei Chen

BioYunwei Chen is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University, affiliated with the Stanford Center on China's Economy and Institutions and the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health.
Her academic training is in global health economics. Prior to joining Stanford, she earned a PhD in Health Policy and Management (Economics Track) from the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2024.
Her research explores innovative solutions for effective delivery of public health interventions in resource-limited settings with rigorous experimental and quasi-experimental designs. Her current research agenda is centered on integrating digital health technologies to develop comprehensive and tailored interventions for children and mothers living in resource-limited settings during crucial developmental stages, aiming for both effectiveness and scalability. -

BioThe short version is that I’m an anti-disciplinary scientist. The slightly longer version is that I’m a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford sitting in the lab of Jonas Cremer where I use principles of bacterial physiology to make predictive models of evolution. I firmly believe that the future of biology relies on an intuition for the physics that governs it, especially in evolutionary biology.
Being the progeny of two paleontologists, I grew up in rural Utah where I was raised in a concoction of contradictions. While my weekends were spent with my parents helping dig up dinosaur bones and grappling with geology of my surroundings, my weekdays were spent in the rural public education system where I was taught evolution was a lie, humans can’t impact the Earth, and that dinosaur bones were buried by either the devil or the government (or maybe both). Contending with these diametrically opposed views of science and experiencing its influence on public discourse has strongly influenced the way I want to understand the world; through the cold, unforgiving, and objective lens of math.
After studying biology and chemistry at the University of Utah, I earned a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics under the tutelage of Rob Phillips at the California Institute of Technology. Through studying how bacterial cells control the action of their own genes, I learned how to approach biological problems from a physical and probabalistic perspective. I have carried this manner of scientific study with me where I bring it to bear on the complex phenomena that emerge at the intersection of bacterial physiology, ecology, and evolution.
Beyond quantitative science, I am an amateur web developer and help build and maintain a number of scientific resources, such as the Human Impacts Database. Beyond science, I love taking photographs, making programmatically generated art, vector based illustration (like those on my research page), and exploring the wild lands of California. I also watch my fair share of films and television about which I have hard-headed opinions, such as an affinity for Alejandro Jodorowsky and Julia Ducournau and a disdain for Star Wars and Marvel. -
Lauren Cote

BioI'm a developmental biologist with a background in planarian regeneration who is studying epithelial cells in Jessica Feldman's lab as a Damon Runyon Fellow supported by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. I'm interested in understanding better how different kinds of epithelial cells, like the cells that line your gut and the cells that make up your skin, are able to correctly connect to one another and form fully continuous organs.

Onja Davidson Raoelison

BioOnja Davidson Raoelison is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the King Center on Global Development. Prior to joining Stanford, she earned her PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. She holds a joint MSc in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UCLA and in Civil Engineering from ESTP Paris, France.
Her overarching research focuses on the connection between wildfires, water quality, and human health, aiming to develop sustainable engineering solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of wildfires on water quality. Specifically, her research agenda at the Stanford Department of Medicine aims to understand how wildfires can increase the risk of waterborne infectious diseases due to their impact on microbial water quality. -
Daniela de Angeli Dutra
Postdoctoral Scholar, Biology
BioHello, I am Daniela and I am a disease ecologist and parasitologist from Brazil. My research focuses on disease ecology and my main goal is to fill gaps in research that will lead to a better understanding of the patterns and mechanisms that contribute to parasite spread and the possible ways to mitigate pathogen impact. I have already explored a broad range of avian parasites, from ticks down to protozoans, such as Babesia. However, most of my research is focused on malaria and malaria-like (haemosporidian) parasites. During my undergraduate, master's, and PhD, I studied malaria parasites infecting wild, domestic, and rehabilitating avian hosts. Since then, I have dedicated myself to investigating macroecological and evolutionary patterns of parasite-host dynamics. My current research focuses on the effect of global change on vector-borne diseases. Ultimately, my research should help to improve models to predict, prevent, or mitigate disease outbreaks and human burden.

Eagan Dean
Postdoctoral Scholar, Comparative Literature
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAt the Clayman Institue, Eagan Dean is completing his book manuscript, Inventing American Gender: Nineteenth Century American Literary Gender and its Uses. The monograph demonstrates that historical U.S. texts produced gender identities anew as rhetorical tools and used these tools to advance the political investments of their authors pertaining to racial and colonial power. Dean particularly focuses on emergent theories of the transgender figure’s role in the nation. The monograph investigates not simply what gender is, but what gender does in American history.
At Stanford, Dean will also devote time to developing their second project, Possessing a “Twofold Soul”: Toward A Spiritual Genealogy of The Trans Self in America, which investigates how early American religious ideas about the ineffable inner soul influenced gender identity’s emergence as a concept. This project critiques the conceptions of gender as an abstract personal property which echo colonial theories of interiority, which in turn were designed to exclude racialized Americans. In 2024, Dean won the Rising Scholar Prize from The Society of Nineteenth-Century Americanists for an essay drawn from this project. He is currently developing an article on antebellum gender nonconformity as a scholarly identity in collaboration with The Harvard Library Bulletin.
