Danielle Raad
Curator and Assistant Director of Collections, Archaeology
BioDr. Danielle Raad (she/her) is an anthropologist, archaeologist, educator, and museum professional with expertise in object-based teaching and research. She assumed leadership of the Stanford University Archaeology Collections in 2023 and oversees all aspects of operations, acquisitions, registration, collections management, education, research, and outreach as the Curator and Assistant Director of Collections.
As a Postdoctoral Fellow in Academic Affairs at the Yale University Art Gallery, she expanded curricular and co-curricular engagement with the collections, leading over 50 university course visits and tours for students and staff in departments and programs across campus. She co-curated a photography installation and facilitated a range of object-based teaching workshops.
Dr. Raad holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology with a certificate in Public History from UMass Amherst, an S.M. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an M.A. in Chemistry from Harvard University, and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Brown University. While at UMass, she also earned a certificate in Public History with a focus in Museum Studies, completing internships in museum education, curation, and collections management.
Her additional teaching credentials include an M.Ed. in Secondary Education from Lesley University and a Postdoctoral Certificate of College Teaching Preparation from Yale’s Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. An experienced and award-winning educator, Dr. Raad has taught at the high school, community college, and university levels, been an academic advisor, and developed and published innovative curricula in archaeology and physics.
Dr. Raad's research interests traverse humanities, social sciences, and STEM disciplines. She has analyzed the chemical signature of salt production ceramics, reconstructed lapidary technologies of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic Levant, characterized the material and ideological manifestations of a WWII-era plane crash in Massachusetts, and investigated the relationship between historic plaster cast collections and modernist architecture.
Her first book, Above the Oxbow: The Construction of Place on Mount Holyoke, currently under advance contract and review with West Virginia University Press, develops a framework for an “orogenic ethnography,” a contemporary archaeological ethnography of place-making on mountain landscapes. The book is a multi-stranded story of place attachment on Mount Holyoke, a mountain in Western Massachusetts, that considers community activism, the creation and propagation of historical narratives and visions of the landscape, and engagements with material culture and the more-than-human environment over two centuries. -
Srinivas Raghu
Professor of Physics
BioI am interested in the emergent behavior of quantum condensed matter systems. Some recent research topics include non-Fermi liquids, quantum criticality, statistical mechanics of strongly interacting and disordered quantum systems, physics of the half-filled Landau level, quantum Hall to insulator transitions, superconductor-metal-insulator transitions, and the phenomenology of quantum materials.
Past contributions that I'm particularly proud of include the co-founding of the subject of topological photonics (with Duncan Haldane), scaling theories of non-Fermi liquid metals (with Shamit Kachru and Gonzalo Torroba), Euclidean lattice descriptions of Chern-Simons matter theories and their dualities in 2+1 dimensions (with Jing-Yuan Chen and Jun Ho Son), and 'dual' perspectives of quantum Hall transitions (with Prashant Kumar and Michael Mulligan). -
Nilam Ram
Professor of Communication and of Psychology
BioNilam Ram studies the dynamic interplay of psychological and media processes and how they change from moment-to-moment and across the life span.
Nilam’s research grows out of a history of studying change. After completing his undergraduate study of economics, he worked as a currency trader, frantically tracking and trying to predict the movement of world markets as they jerked up, down and sideways. Later, he moved on to the study of human movement, kinesiology, and eventually psychological processes - with a specialization in longitudinal research methodology. Generally, Nilam studies how short-term changes (e.g., processes such as learning, information processing, emotion regulation, etc.) develop across the life span, and how longitudinal study designs contribute to generation of new knowledge. Current projects include examinations of age-related change in children’s self- and emotion-regulation; patterns in minute-to-minute and day-to-day progression of adolescents’ and adults’ emotions; and change in contextual influences on well-being during old age. He is developing a variety of study paradigms that use recent developments in data science and the intensive data streams arriving from social media, mobile sensors, and smartphones to study change at multiple time scales. -

BioProfessor Ilaria L.E. Ramelli, FRHistS, holds two MAs, a PhD, a Doctorate h.c., a Postdoc, and various Habilitations to Ordinarius. She has been Professor of Roman History, Senior Visiting Professor (Harvard; Boston University; Columbia; Erfurt University), Full Professor of Theology and Endowed Chair (Angelicum), Humboldt Research Award Senior Fellow (Erfurt U. MWK), Professor of Theology (Durham University, Hon.), and Senior Fellow in Classics / Ancient Philosophy / Hellenic Studies / Theology and Religion (Durham U., twice; Princeton; Sacred Heart University; CEU Institute for Advanced Studies; Corpus Christi, Oxford U.; Christ Church, Oxford U.). She investigates ancient philosophy, especially Platonism and Stoicism, ancient theology (esp. Vaughn Rasberry
Associate Professor of English and of African and African American Studies
BioVaughn Rasberry studies African American literature, global Cold War culture, the European Enlightenment and its critics, postcolonial theory, and philosophical theories of modernity. As a Fulbright scholar in 2008-09, he taught in the American Studies department at the Humboldt University Berlin and lectured on African American literature throughout Germany. His current book project, Race and the Totalitarian Century, questions the notion that desegregation prompted African American writers and activists to acquiesce in the normative claims of postwar liberalism. Challenging accounts that portray black cultural workers in various postures of reaction to larger forces--namely U.S. liberalism or Soviet communism--his project argues instead that many writers were involved in a complex national and global dialogue with totalitarianism, the defining geopolitical discourse of the twentieth century.
His article, "'Now Describing You': James Baldwin and Cold War Liberalism," appears in an edited volume titled James Baldwin: America and Beyond (University of Michigan Press, 2011). A review essay, "Black Cultural Politics at the End of History," appears in the winter 2012 issue of American Literary History. An article, "Invoking Totalitarianism: Liberal Democracy versus the Global Jihad in Boualem Sansal's The German Mujahid," appears in the spring 2014 special issue of Novel: a Forum on Fiction. For Black History Month, he published an op-ed essay, "The Shape of African American Geopolitics," in Al Jazeera English.
An Annenberg Faculty Fellow at Stanford (2012-14), he has also received fellowships from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Humanities Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
Vaughn also teaches in collaboration with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE) and the programs in Modern Thought and Literature, African and African American Studies, and American Studies. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a live performance creator and director. I direct theater, musicals, opera, and I create digital media projects. I am always looking for new projects and interdisciplinary collaborations. I am interested in ways that technology can be used to tell stories, in virtual reality and games, and in live performance situations. I have created immersive theater pieces, and I enjoy working with new playwrights and writers to develop and shape their work.

Manuel Razo-Mejia

BioI was born and raised in central Mexico, in a state called Guanajuato. Although I was trained as an engineer due to social circumstances, my passion always resided in the natural world and the way to understand it that physics offered. Guided by this passion, I did my Ph.D. with Rob Phillips at Caltech, working at the interface between physics and biology. For my postdoc, I want to bring the Physical Biology mindset to the question of evolution. That is why I joined Dmitri Petrov's lab to study the evolutionary dynamics of microbial populations from a theory-experiment dialogue perspective.

BioI am a PhD student in Economics at Stanford and a Visiting Fellow at STICERD at the London School of Economics. My research interests lie in public, health and labor economics, with a particular focus on inequality.
Prior to joining Stanford, I worked as a Pre-Doctoral Research Assistant at the LSE's Hub for Equal Representation in the Economy. I completed a Master of Public Administration at the LSE (Distinction) and a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford (First-Class).
