Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory is focused on understanding the cellular mechanisms which mediate end-organ failure in pediatric sepsis. Our current work focuses on determining the role of altered mitochondrial dynamics in sepsis-induced multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Specifically, we focus on understanding the mechanisms that mediate derangements in mitochondrial fission and autophagy in sepsis.

I am a member of the Dean's leadership team and a representative of the School of Medicine in a variety of forums throughout Stanford and externally
My role encompasses responsibilities as Associate Dean, Industry Relations and Digital Health, In this capacity, I lead Stanford Medicine’s Office of Industry Relations and Digital Health (IRDH) whose mission is to foster relationships that will promote discovery, accelerate the use of technologies that advance human health, and translate today’s breakthroughs into tomorrow’s standard of care. IRDH serves as the front door for organizations interested in exploring a strategic relationship with Stanford Medicine. The work is part of Stanford Medicine's Strategy Team, led by Priya Singh.
I also co-lead the Stanford Medicine Catalyst program with Dr. Euan Ashley. We focus on discovering, supporting and propelling healthcare innovation from within the Stanford community. When these innovations are ready, we assist in the commercialization and scaling to reach maximum impact and improve human health. https://smcatalyst.stanford.edu

BioKevin Helenius is a board-certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. He graduated with his Master Physician Assistant (MPA) degree from Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA. Kevin is also a board-certified athletic trainer (ATC) and began his career in sports medicine as the athletic trainer at a local high school in San Jose, CA. Kevin recently returned to the Sports Medicine clinic at Stanford Health Care, where he previously worked prior to his PA education. He currently assists Dr. Tim McAdams in surgery and provides patient care in the outpatient clinic setting. Kevin is also a clinical instructor and PAC Mentor with the Stanford School of Medicine Master of Science in Physician Assistant (PA) Studies program.

Christian Kurt Hirt

Fellow in PathologyBioDr. Hirt received his MD from the University of Berne (Switzerland) and PhD from the University of Basel (Switzerland). He completed his anatomic pathology and clinical pathology residency at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston. He is currently a hematopathology fellow at Stanford. His research and clinical interests include tumor immunology, characterization of the tumor microenvironment and in vitro disease modeling.

Resident in Graduate Medical EducationBioI'm a Cardiothoracic Surgery resident at Stanford Health Care. I also completed an intern year in Pediatrics resident at Boston Children’s Hospital before transitioning to cardiothoracic surgery. I received my MD from Harvard Medical School in the Health Sciences and Technology program joint with MIT. I trained as a biomedical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University with a focus in instrumentation.
I've interests in medical devices spanning from assistive robotics, surgical devices, to point of care devices. I have extensive experience working in the electronics and coding aspect of device development.
My long term goal is to become a congenital cardiovascular surgeon and improve the field of transplantation (partial and whole), congenital cardiac surgery techniques, and congenital mechanical circulatory support. This vocation comes from my personal experience receiving a heart transplant in 1999. -

Fellow in Graduate Medical EducationBioCurrent combined adult and pediatric critical care fellow physician interested in medical education, curriculum design, and health services for adolescent and young adults with childhood-onset chronic conditions and medical complexity.
Most recently, I pursued my internal medicine and pediatrics (MedPeds) residency, chief residency and a medical education fellowship at the University of Illinois in Chicago. During this time, I helped implement our new X+Y resident schedule, created a multidisciplinary medical education track for residents, revamped curricula on resident mistreatment and self-advocacy, and worked with both the pediatric and adult critical care teams to develop resuscitation simulation bootcamps. My academic and institutional service interests revolved around the evolution of expertise and belonging over the course of training, particularly as it pertains to critical care resuscitation, medical educators in training, and underrepresented groups in medicine. -
Yang Hu, MD, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe ultimate goal of the laboratory is to develop efficient therapeutic strategies to achieve CNS neural repair, through promoting neuroprotection, axon regeneration and functional recovery.
More specifically, we study retinal ganglion cell (RGC) and optic nerve in various optic neuropathies including traumatic, glaucomatous and inflammatory optic nerve injuries to fully understand the molecular mechanisms of CNS neurodegeneration and axon regeneration failure. -
Hehua (Hannah) Huang

Fellow in PathologyBioDr. Hehua "Hannah" Huang is an Anatomic Pathology (AP) board-certified pathologist with extensive clinical and research experience. She is currently a Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellow at Stanford University (2024-2025) and will pursue a Cytopathology Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital & Massachusetts General Hospital (BWH & MGH) in 2025.
Dr. Huang earned her M.D. from Sun Yat-Sen University of Clinical Medicine in Guangzhou, China, practiced internal medicine, and then earned an M.S. in Clinical Pharmacology from Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, China. She completed her Anatomic Pathology residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Her research experience includes Phase I clinical studies involving pharmacokinetics and developing and validating liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assays. Her research interests encompass next-generation sequencing (NGS), precision medicine, molecular tumor profiling, liquid biopsy and fine needle aspiration (FNA) in cytopathology. -
