Current Research and Scholarly InterestsRecent clinical studies, by us and others, have demonstrated that genetically engineered T cells can eradicate cancers resistant to all other therapies. We are identifying new targets for these therapeutics, exploring pathways of resistance to current cell therapies and creating next generation platforms to overcome therapeutic resistance. We have discovered novel insights into the biology of human T cell exhaustion and developed approaches to prevent and reverse this phenomenon.

Research Focus:
My primary research interest is the design and conduct of multicenter clinical trials and analyses of important clinical cardiac issues using large patient databases. My research focuses on novel anticoagulation agents for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes and atrial fibrillation, the study of agents targeted to protect the myocardium during reperfusion therapy for acute myocardial infarction, and the evaluation of cardiovascular safety of diabetic therapies. I am also interested in the methodology of clinical trials. Current research activities include standardization of the definition of myocardial infarction used in clinical trials, the adjudication of suspected clinical endpoint events by Clinical Event Committees (CEC), and the efficient operational conduct of large multinational clinical trials.

Anurag Mairal
Adjunct Professor, Medicine - Cardiovascular Medicine
BioDr. Anurag Mairal is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine and the Director, Global Outreach Programs at Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, Stanford University. He is also a Faculty Fellow and Lead for Technology Innovation and Impact at Center for Innovation in Global Health. In these roles, he leads initiatives focused on applying the biodesign process to resource-constrained se ttings globally. Further, he facilitates opportunities for students, faculty and fellows at Stanford to work on global healthcare needs. He is founding co-Director for MED 232, Global Health: Scaling Health Technology Innovations in Low Resource Settings, and was part of the founding faculty team for BIOE 371, Global Biodesign: Medical Technology in an International Context, graduate-level courses offered to engineering, business, and medical students at Stanford University. Earlier, he served as Associate Director for the Stanford-India Biodesign and Singapore-Stanford Biodesign programs. He serves as the Founding Chair of BME IDEA APAC, a community of medtech innovation programs in Asia Pacific, partnering closely with the industry and academia in the region. He is also an Honorary Professor at University of Cape Town, South Africa. Concurrently, he is a co-founder and Executive Vice President of Orbees Medical, a SF Bay Area-based strategy consulting firm serving global healthcare industry, with a focus on medtech, pharmaceutical, and digital health industry.
Dr. Mairal has an extensive background in medical technology development and commercialization, collaborating with partners in the U.S., India, China, and other emerging markets to advance product development, manufacturing, and distribution. Recently, he took a sabbatical for two years to take a senior leadership role at PATH, a major global health nonprofit based in Seattle. In this role, he oversaw research and development, commercialization, and implementation of technologies in PATH’s medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health divisions. Previously, he held several positions at Johnson & Johnson, including Business Development Director and Product Director for structural heart, cardiology, and peripheral vascular products at Cordis. Before joining J&J, he was a Group Leader and a Process Development Manager at Membrane Technology and Research (MTR). At MTR, he was responsible for business development, strategic alliances, and product development in the bioseparations area. An active mentor to entrepreneurs and industry professionals, he serves as the chair of PATH’s Bay Area Leadership Council; chair of the board at EPPIC Global Network; chair of Faculty Alumni Network at IIT Bombay Heritage Foundation; and President of Sewa International - Bay Area.
Dr. Mairal earned a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. He also holds an MS in chemical engineering from the Indian Institution of Technology in Mumbai and a BS in chemical engineering from National Institute of Technology, Raipur. Dr. Mairal was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Twente, Netherlands and at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. At BerkeleyHaas, he was a founding co-Chairman of the South Asia Business Conference and Chair of the Biotech Panel for the Asia Business Conference. His work has been published in more than 30 publications, and he has seven issued patents. -
Amrapali Maitra

BioAmrapali Maitra is a clinician, educator, and scholar with training from Harvard and Stanford as well as a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow for New Americans (2013). Her clinical practice emphasizes humanism and attention to health equity through structural competency. As an educator, she is committed to diversity and inclusion in the learning environment for pre-medical, medical, and graduate medical trainees, as well as centering patients as teachers. Her scholarship focuses on intimate partner violence, trauma-informed care, medical education, and the humanities.

Ravi Majeti MD, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Majeti lab focuses on the molecular/genomic characterization and therapeutic targeting of leukemia stem cells in human hematologic malignancies, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Our lab uses experimental hematology methods, stem cell assays, genome editing, and bioinformatics to define and investigate drivers of leukemia stem cell behavior. As part of these studies, we have led the development and application of robust xenotransplantation assays for human hematopoietic cells.

Joshua Makower
Yock Family Professor and Professor of Bioengineering
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Josh Makower is the Boston Scientific Applied Bioengineering Professor of Medicine and of Bioengineering at the Stanford University Schools of Medicine and Engineering and the Director of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, the program he co-founded with Dr. Paul Yock twenty years ago. Josh helped create the fundamental structure of the Center’s core curriculum and is the chief architect of what is now called “The Biodesign Process.” Over the past 20 years since Josh and Paul founded Biodesign, this curriculum and the associated textbook has been used at Stanford and across the world to train hundreds of thousands of students, faculty and industry leaders on the Biodesign process towards the advancement of medical innovation for the improvement of patient care. Josh has practiced these same techniques directly as the Founder & Executive Chairman of ExploraMed, a medical device incubator, creating 9 companies since 1995. Transactions from the ExploraMed portfolio include NeoTract, acquired by Teleflex, Acclarent, acquired by J&J, EndoMatrix, acquired by C.R. Bard & TransVascular, acquired by Medtronic. Other ExploraMed/NEA ventures include Moximed, NC8 and Willow. Josh is also a Special Partner at NEA where he supports the healthcare team and medtech/healthtech investing practice. Josh serves on the boards of Allay Therapeutics, Revelle Aesthetics, Setpoint Medical, DOTS Technologies, Eargo, ExploraMed, Intrinsic Therapeutics, Moximed, Willow and Coravin. Josh holds over 300 patents and patent applications. He received an MBA from Columbia University, an MD from the NYU School of Medicine, a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. Arek Melkon Manugian, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Manugian is a board-certified internal medicine doctor at Stanford Primary Care in Portola Valley. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
He has experience diagnosing, managing, and treating a wide range of conditions. These include gastrointestinal disorders, hypertension (high blood pressure), and obesity. Dr. Manugian develops an individualized care plan for each one of his patients.
Dr. Manugian’s research interests include blood pressure medication, gastric bypass surgery, and restless legs syndrome. He received a student research grant to study how the body processes glucagon (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) following gastric bypass surgery. Dr. Manugian has also studied muscle inflammation as a rare side effect of statins (drugs that lower cholesterol). He monitored a clinical trial evaluating the prescribing of drugs to lower high blood pressure. As a clinical research associate at the Stanford University Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine, Dr. Manugian studied medications to treat restless legs syndrome.
Dr. Manugian presented research to his peers during his residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He has taught medical students, residents, and physicians about a variety of topics, including alcohol abuse, tick-born illnesses, and managing indigestion.
Dr. Manugian is a member of the American College of Physicians. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Maron is the Co-Chair and Principal Investigator of the ISCHEMIA trial, and Co-Chair of the ISCHEMIA-CKD trial. These large, international, NIH-funded studies will determine whether an initial invasive strategy of cardiac catheterization and revascularization plus optimal medical therapy will reduce cardiovascular events in patients with and without chronic kidney disease and at least moderate ischemia compared to an initial conservative strategy of optimal medical therapy alone.

Mark Mercola

BioDr. Mercola is Professor of Medicine and Professor in the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. He completed postdoctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, was on the faculty in the Department of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School for 12 years, and later at the Sanford-Burnham-Prebys Institute and Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego before relocating to Stanford in 2015.
Prof. Mercola is known for identifying many of the factors that are responsible for inducing and forming the heart, including the discovery that Wnt inhibition is a critical step in cardiogenesis that provided the conceptual basis and reagents for the large-scale production of cardiovascular tissues from pluripotent stem cells. He has collaborated with medicinal chemists, optical engineers and software developers to pioneer the use of patient iPSC-cardiomyocytes for disease modeling, safety pharmacology and drug development. His academic research is focused on developing and using quantitative high throughput assays of patient-specific cardiomyocyte function to discover druggable targets for preserving contractile function in heart failure and promoting regeneration following ischemic injury. He co-established drug screening and assay development at the Conrad Prebys Drug Discovery Center (San Diego), which operated as one of 4 large screening centers of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) Molecular Libraries screening initiative and continues as one of the largest academic drug screening centers.
Prof. Mercola received an NIH MERIT award for his work on heart formation. He holds numerous patents, including describing the invention of the first engineered dominant negative protein and small molecules for stem cell and cancer applications. He serves on multiple editorial and advisory boards, including Vala Sciences, Regencor, The Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research and the Human Biomolecular Research Institute. His laboratory is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Phospholamban Foundation and Fondation Leducq. -

Timothy Meyer

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsInadequate removal of uremic solutes contributes to widespread illness in the more than 500,000 Americans maintained on dialysis. But we know remarkably little about these solutes. Dr. Meyer's research efforts are focused on identifying which uremic solutes are toxic, how these solutes are made, and how their production could be decreased or their removal could be increased. We should be able to improve treatment if we knew more about what we are trying to remove.

Lekha Mikkilineni

BioDr. Lekha Mikkilineni is a board-certified medical oncologist. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Blood & Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy.
Dr. Mikkilineni has extensive experience treating blood and bone marrow cancers. She currently provides care through the Bone Marrow Transplant & Cellular Therapy Program at Stanford Health Care. Her clinical focus is multiple myeloma, plasma-cell leukemia, Extramedullary myeloma, high-risk myeloma, CAR T cell therapy, bispecific therapy, amyloidosis, POEMS syndrome, and Waldenstrom’s macroglobunemia.
Dr. Mikkilineni’s research centers on exploring novel CAR T-cell therapies to treat multiple myeloma and to define mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapy. She is particularly focused on understanding how to improve therapies for multiple myeloma patients who have extramedullary disease or high-risk features. Prior to coming to Stanford, she ran phase 1 CAR T-cell trials for multiple myeloma targeting BCMA and SLAMF7 at the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Mikkilineni received the Conquer Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology for her research focusing on SLAMF7 as a potential target for multiple myeloma. She has received honors and awards for her work at the NCI. She has completed fellowships in hematology/oncology and immunotherapy at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute/National Cancer Institute. She finished her residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She holds a Master of Science in medical sciences from Boston University and a medical degree from Tulane University.
Dr. Mikkilineni has authored book chapters and published research in numerous high-impact academic journals. She has presented her findings through oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences. -

His correlative research studies: 1) tumor antigen quantification, 2) single cell functional product characterization, 3) CAR-FACS immune phenotyping of blood and tumor, and identifying mechanisms for CAR-T treatment Failure including antigen loss, CAR-T exhaustion, and CAR suppression.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsAt Stanford University I developed and currently direct the CF Translational Research Center. The overarching goal of the center is to provide the groundwork to streamline, accelerate, and promote the translation of basic discoveries into effective therapies and interventions to benefit patients affected by cystic fibrosis. My laboratory group currently has three main lines of investigation: respiratory cell biology in CF; remote biochemical monitoring; and lung physiology in young children.

She is interested in preclinical proof of principle studies on mechanisms inducing cell death and on metabolic targets involving nucleic acid biosynthesis in malignant cells. She is also interested in the translation of these studies into clinical trials.

Maha Abdalla Mohamed, MD, FACP, FAST

BioDr. Mohamed is a board-certified, fellowship-trained nephrologist with the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Stanford Healthcare. She is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology.
Dr. Mohamed specializes in kidney and pancreas transplant outcomes and kidney transplant health equity. Conditions she treats include allografts rejection, recipient BK virus and CMV infection, and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder management. Dr. Mohamed is known for her personalized and comprehensive approach to patient care. She takes the time to understand her patients’ unique health needs and creates tailored care plans that fit their lifestyles.
Dr. Mohamed’s research interests include examining new approaches to improving kidney transplant long-term outcome including kidney transplant rejection and infection. She also seeks to develop better screening and monitoring guidance to help reduce post-transplant BK virus and CMV infection.
Dr. Mohamed’s published work can be found in peer-reviewed journals such as Clinical Transplantation, Transplant Infectious Disease and Transplantation. She has presented to her peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including at the American Transplant Congress and the American Society of Nephrology. She has also been invited to speak multiple times at King Faisal Hospital in Rwanda as well as in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on topics like post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, update in kidney transplant rejection, and update in living-donor kidney transplantation.
Dr. Mohamed is a faculty fellow of Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, fellow of the American Society of Transplantation, a board of managers member of the AST Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Training Accreditation Program, member of the International Society of Nephrology and the American Society of Nephrology. -

BioI was born, raised, and trained in Nashik, India where I completed my formal Medical Education before moving to New York City where I completed my residency in Internal Medicine at New York Downtown Hospital in New York, NY. My interests are in preventative medicne, health and wellness, occupational and environmental safety. In Stanford's Occupational Health Department, I practice clinical occupational medicine while working toward identifying health and safety issues within our enviroment to prevent further injury and illness to our employees.

Tamara Montacute, MD, MPH

BioTamara Kailoa Montacute is a board certified Family Medicine physician. She enjoys taking care of the entire family (including kids), and has special interest in women’s health, adolescent health, community health, chronic disease management, mental health and office based procedures. She also speaks Spanish.
She was born in New Zealand, grew up in England and moved to Seattle when she was twelve. Prior to attending medical school at Stanford, she completed her Masters in Public Health at Columbia University and spent several years working on public health programs in Mexico, Panama, Ethiopia and Rwanda. After medical school, she completed a Family Medicine Residency at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose. She is the co-medical director of Arbor Free Clinic, teaches several primary care focused medical student courses and spends part of her time caring for patients at the Samaritan House Free Clinics in Redwood City and San Mateo.
Outside the clinic, she enjoys hiking, biking, gardening and playing with her daughter and 2 dogs. -

Adjunct Professor, Psych/General Psychiatry and Psychology (Adult)BioStephen Murphy-Shigematsu received a doctorate in clinical and community psychology from Harvard University and was professor at the University of Tokyo before coming to Stanford. His appointments include consulting professor in the School of Medicine, School of Humanities and Science, and visiting professor in the School of Education. He has taught in Health and Human Performance, Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity, Psychology, Anthropology, and Human Biology. His consulting practice with American and Japanese organizations is based in mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and narrative, balancing Eastern and Western wisdom and science. He is author of 11 books in Japanese and English including, Multicultural Encounters: Case Narratives of a Counseling Practice (2002), When Half is Whole: Multiethnic Asian American Identities (2012); Synergy, Healing, and Empowerment: Insights from Cultural Diversity (with Richard Katz) (2012); From Mindfulness to Heartfulness: Transforming Self and Society with Compassion (2018).

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsModern science requires that experimental data—and descriptions of the methods used to generate and analyze the data—are available online. Our laboratory studies methods for creating comprehensive, machine-actionable descriptions both of data and of experiments that can be processed by other scientists and by computers. We are also working to "clean up" legacy data and metadata to improve adherence to standards and to facilitate open science broadly.
