Laura A. Pace
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Gastroenterology & Hepatology
BioI am a physician-scientist specializing in neuroimmunogastroenterology with a focus on the diagnosis and care of people suffering from complex multisystem disorders involving the neuroimmune axis. Neuroimmune axis disorders are conditions at the interface of the nervous and immune systems and often involve autonomic nervous system dysregulation, extracellular matrix|connective tissue dysregulation, endocrine dysregulation, and metabolic dysregulation. These conditions disproportionately and more severely impact females and often have an onset after an immune activating event such as an infection, surgery, concussion, or physical trauma. The complex, multisystem nature of these conditions requires the integration of information from multiple domains to diagnose and identify personalized therapeutic interventions. While at the University of Utah, I was part of the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Network from 2017-2024, an experience that furthered my resolve to develop a precision medicine program focused on neuroimmune axis disorders. I am an ardent patient advocate and serve on the boards of several patient advocacy groups.
I am board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology through the American Board of Internal Medicine, and Autonomic Disorders through the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. Additionally, I have formalized clinical training in Neurogastroenterology and Medical Genetics, and a PhD in Neuroscience. I am a former NIH Building Interdisciplinary Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) Scholar. To date I have published over 120 peer reviewed scientific articles and have received research funding from the NIH and private foundations.
My research has spanned the study of mammalian cell signaling; the physiology, ecology, and evolution of microbial metabolism; and human-microbe interactions leveraging multiomics. Through several collaborative multidisciplinary research projects her current work is focused on decoding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neuroimmune axis disorders. Some of these exciting projects include the application of next-generation environmental microbiology techniques to understand the complex human-microbiota interactions at mucosal interfaces; identifying genetic and environmental contributions to neuroimmune axis disorders; and the development and application of novel therapeutics to treat these disabling disorders. -
Cholawat Pacharinsak, DVM, PhD
Associate Professor of Comparative Medicine
BioCholawat Pacharinsak, DVM, PhD Associate Professor and Director of Anesthesia, Pain Management, and Surgery, at Stanford University’s Department of Comparative Medicine; he is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (DACVAA). He received his DVM from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand and trained in an Anesthesiology/Pain Management residency program and received his Master's degree at Washington State University. He completed his PhD in Comparative and Molecular Biosciences from the University of Minnesota. Prior to arriving at Stanford, Dr. Pacharinsak was a faculty member in Anesthesiology and Pain Management at Michigan State University and Purdue University; and served as a Clinical Specialist at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. His research focuses on understanding the neurobiology of cancer pain, chemotherapeutic-induced peripheral neuropathy, acute surgical pain models, and methods to improve clinical pain management e.g. sustained release analgesics supporting refinement. Research methodology includes electrophysiologic and behavioral techniques.

Cesar Raudel Padilla
Clinical Associate Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Cesar Padilla is a first-generation Mexican American from Northern California. His parents emigrated from the Mexican state of Jalisco, settling in the East Bay Area (Union City) in the 1970s, where they worked in local factories. Cesar would spend every summer of his childhood in Mexico, where his passion and inspiration for becoming a doctor was ignited. After high school, he attended Ohlone Community College in Fremont where he heard about and attended Stanford University's Minority Medical Alliance conference at age 19, inspiring him to pursue medicine. Dr. Padilla is now double fellowship trained from Harvard Medical School in critical care medicine and obstetric anesthesiology, with additional training in critical care echocardiography. His research interests include critical care in obstetrics and addressing inequities in maternal/obstetric care. Dr. Padilla also serves as the Chief Medical Education Advisor for Alliance in Mentorship/MiMentor, a non-profit organization with a mission of mentoring underrepresented students interested in medicine and is the Co-Chair of the inaugural Council of Anesthesiology for the National Hispanic Medical Association. Dr. Padilla is currently a clinical assistant professor at Stanford and hopes to connect, teach, and inspire the next generation of students pursuing medicine.

Ryan Christopher Padrez
Clinical Associate Professor, Pediatrics - General Pediatrics
BioRyan is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University's Division of General Pediatrics. His primary clinical practices are at Gardner Packard Children's Health Center and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. In addition to his work at Stanford, Ryan also serves as the Medical Director for The Primary School, a new integrated health and education model that serves low income children and families in East Palo Alto, CA. His work and leadership focuses on the intersection and reform of primary pediatric care and early childhood education. He works to integrate systems and promote models that ensure high quality care is accessible to all children.
Ryan graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Human Biology and earned his MD at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He completed his pediatric residency at UCSF and participated in UCSF's Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved (PLUS) program. He went on to complete a chief resident year at The San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Pagán lab is interested in the regulation of immunity and pathogenesis in tuberculosis (TB). TB is characterized by the formation of multicellular aggregates of immune cells called granulomas. We leverage the powerful genetics and imaging capabilities of genetically diverse fish models of TB, which capture key features of human TB granulomas, to address fundamental questions in mycobacterial pathogenesis and granuloma immunobiology.

My research focuses on rigorously evaluating--1) how these tools affect clinician knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors; and 2) how these tools affect clinical outcomes and efficiency of health care delivery.

BioDr. Pajcini studied Molecular and Cell Biology as an undergraduate at U.C. Berkeley. He received his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He completed Diagnostic Radiology residency at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and a Breast Imaging fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine. His clinical focus is on breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment.

Neda Pakdaman
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Pakdaman practices Internal Medicine in Silicon Valley. She received her medical education at Yale University School of Medicine where she earned the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Achievement Award for Women in Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford University Hospital and was nominated for the Alwin Rambar-James Mark Award for Excellence in Patient Care.
Dr. Pakdaman has been involved in developing innovative models for patient centered practice delivery. She has extensive background in Concierge Medicine as well as Executive Medicine. In addition, prior to coming to Stanford, she helped initiate and served as medical director for the Palliative Care inpatient consult service at El Camino Hospital. During that time, she served as chair of the El Camino Hospital Ethics Committee and as an advisory member for the Genomics Medicine Institute at El Camino Hospital. Drawing from her experiences working in both executive health programs and retainer based practices, she joined Stanford in 2012 to help launch Stanford Concierge Medicine. She subsequently served as the Medical Director of Stanford Concierge Medicine and Stanford Executive Health for five years where she helped pilot aspects of Stanford Precision Health platform.
Dr. Pakdaman's clinical focus is adult primary care with health promotion and disease prevention/management.

Julia Palacios

BioDr. Palacios seek to provide statistically rigorous answers to concrete, data driven questions in evolutionary genetics and public health . My research involves probabilistic modeling of evolutionary forces and the development of computationally tractable methods that are applicable to big data problems. Past and current research relies heavily on the theory of stochastic processes, Bayesian nonparametrics and recent developments in machine learning and statistical theory for big data.

Theo Palmer

Our primary goal is to understand how genes and environment synergize in influencing stem cell behavior during development and how mild genetic or environmental risk factors for disease may synergize in their detrimental effects on brain development or in the risk of neuronal loss in age-related degenerative disease.

Carolyn K. Pan, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Ophthalmology
BioDr. Pan is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon. She focuses on retinal vascular diseases, macular degeneration, and surgical repair of retinal detachments, macular pathology, and complications from cataract surgery. She has co-authored peer-reviewed articles on topics ranging from optical coherence tomography imaging to embryonic stem cells for macular degeneration.
In addition to her clinical practice, she is dedicated to the education and training of medical students, residents, and fellows. As recognition of her efforts, she received the Faculty Teaching Award in 2016 from the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University, was the Associate Residency Program Director from 2020 to 2023, and currently serves as the Residency Program Director. Her educational efforts also extend beyond the department - since 2016, she has served on the annual meeting planning committee for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is currently Associate Secretary of the Annual Meeting and Chair of the Special Projects Committee.
Dr. Pan's clinical practice is mainly based at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Stanford's affiliate county hospital, where she is chief of the retina service. -
Minggui Pan, MD, PhD

BioDr. Pan is a board-certified, fellowship-trained medical oncologist with the Stanford Medicine Cancer Center and a clinical professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology.
He diagnoses and treats various oncological conditions and specializes in the treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcoma. He creates personalized and comprehensive care plans for each patient he serves.
Dr. Pan’s research focuses include understanding how genomic alterations impact the biological behavior and prognosis of sarcomas. In his work, he identifies new targets for developing innovative therapeutics for sarcoma treatment.
He has published more than fifty papers and many abstracts and presented in many cancer and immunology conferences. His papers have been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, JCO Precision Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, Nature Review Clinical Oncology, JCO Oncology Practice, Journal of Hematology and Oncology, and other peer-reviewed journals. He has also presented to his peers at international, national, and regional meetings, including the annual meetings of American Society of Clinical Oncology, Chinese Society Of Clinical Oncology, Connective Tissue Oncology Society and others.

Board-certified in Anesthesiology and Transfusion Medicine, Dr. Panigrahi works clinically in both specialties.
Dr. Panigrahi currently leads Patient Blood Management initiatives throughout Stanford Medicine and serves as Stanford Anesthesiology Director of Patient Blood Management, Co-Chair of the Stanford Health Care Transfusion Committee, Medical Director of Stanford Anesthesiology’s Perioperative Anemia Management Clinic, and an Assistant Medical Director of the Stanford Health Care Transfusion Service.
Dr. Panigrahi is a contributor to leading academic textbooks of Anesthesiology and Transfusion Medicine, including Miller’s Anesthesia and the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) Technical Manual. He regularly lectures at national conferences and has presented at annual meetings for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), AABB, and the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM). We use cultured kidney cells, transgenic mice, human plasma/urine samples, and electronic health record data to study the pathogenesis of kidney stone disease. Our therapeutic focus is on the development of small molecule compounds that can be used for kidney stone prevention.

She obtained her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed both her residency and fellowship through Stanford University. During her fellowship, she simultaneously earned a Master of Science in health policy from Stanford University.
Dr. Parikh specializes in the care of patients with genitourinary cancers. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, she currently is a clinical assistant professor of medical oncology at Stanford School of Medicine. She mentors medical residents and fellows by sharing her insights, knowledge, and expertise.

Victoria Parikh
Associate Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine)
BioDr. Parikh is a clinician scientist who cares for patients with and studies inherited (genetic) cardiovascular disease. She is the director of the Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease (SCICD) which is one of the largest of its kind in the country. SCICD integrates clinical and basic science with the expert care of patients with genetic cardiovascular conditions (e.g., cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias and vascular diseases). It provides cutting edge care for thousands of patients and families across the lifespan and integrates medical, surgical and genetics care. Our team includes physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, genetic counselors, exercise physiologists and scientists.
Dr. Parikh's own clinical practice and laboratory are focused on the genetics of cardiomyopathies and their associated arrhythmogenic substrates. She completed clinical cardiology fellowship at Stanford School of Medicine and her medical residency at the University of California, San Francisco. Funded by multiple research grants from the NIH, her lab seeks to identify novel mechanisms and therapeutic technologies for genetic cardiomyopathy as well as better understand the natural histories of patients affected by these diseases. -

Robertson Parkman
Adjunct Professor, Pediatrics - Stem Cell Transplantation
BioMy principal research interests have been the assessment of the immunological consequences of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation including both acute and chronic graft versus host disease and immune reconstitution and the use of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to treat genetic diseases. My laboratory was the first to suggest that chronic graft versus host disease was an autoimmune disease directed at histocompatibility antigens shared by donors and recipients. The observation leaded to the assessment of the role of thymic dysfunction in the pathogenesis of chronic graft versus host disease. As a pediatric immunologist I have investigated the role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation initially in the treatment of primary immune deficiency diseases and later the treatment of metabolic diseases, which lead to my involvement in the early gene transfer clinical trials.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe lab is studying the mechanisms controlling B cell responsiveness and the balance between tolerance and autoimmunity. B cells deficient in CD72 are hyperresponsive to stimulation through the B cell receptor. We are examining the alterations in B cell signaling in these B cells and the mechanisms by which CD72 deficiency partially abrogates anergic tolerance. We hope to learn how deficiency in CD72 leads to spontaneous autoimmunity and increased susceptibility to induced autoimmune disease.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am an infectious diseases epidemiologist who has done large field studies in both the US and developing countries. We research the long-term consequences of chronic interactions between the human host and the microbial world. My lab has done fundamental work establishing the role of H. pylori in causing disease and understanding its epidemiology. Currently, our research dissects how and when children first encounter microbes and the long term effects of these exposures on health.

BioDr. Parvizi completed his medical internship at Mayo Clinic, neurology training at Harvard, and subspecialty training in clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy at UCLA before joining the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford in 2007. Dr. Parvizi directs the Stanford Program for Medication Resistant Epilepsies and specializes in surgical treatments of intractable focal epilepsies. Anca M. Pasca, MD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe research focus of the lab is to understand molecular mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental disorders associated with premature birth, neonatal and fetal brain injury with the long-term goal of translating the lab’s findings into therapeutics. The research team employs a multidisciplinary approach involving genetics, molecular and developmental neurobiology, animal models and neural cells differentiated from patient-derived induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. In particular, the lab is using a powerful 3D human brain-region specific organoid system developed at Stanford (Nature Methods, 2015; Nature Protocols, 2018) to ask questions about brain injury during development.

Sergiu P. Pasca

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsA critical challenge in understanding the intricate programs underlying development, assembly and dysfunction of the human brain is the lack of direct access to intact, functioning human brain tissue for detailed investigation by imaging, recording, and stimulation.
To address this, we are developing bottom-up approaches to generate and assemble, from multi-cellular components, human neural circuits in vitro and in vivo.
We introduced the use of instructive signals for deriving from human pluripotent stem cells self-organizing 3D cellular structures named brain region-specific spheroids/organoids. We demonstrated that these cultures, such as the ones resembling the cerebral cortex, can be reliably derived across many lines and experiments, contain synaptically connected neurons and non-reactive astrocytes, and can be used to gain mechanistic insights into genetic and environmental brain disorders. Moreover, when maintained as long-term cultures, they recapitulate an intrinsic program of maturation that progresses towards postnatal stages.
We also pioneered a modular system to integrate 3D brain region-specific organoids and study human neuronal migration and neural circuit formation in functional preparations that we named assembloids. We have actively applied these models in combination with studies in long-term ex vivo brain preparations to acquire a deeper understanding of human physiology, evolution and disease mechanisms.
We have carved a unique research program that combines rigorous in vivo and in vitro neuroscience, stem cell and molecular biology approaches to construct and deconstruct previously inaccessible stages of human brain development and function in health and disease.
We believe science is a community effort, and accordingly, we have been advancing the field by broadly and openly sharing our technologies with numerous laboratories around the world and organizing the primary research conference and the training courses in the area of cellular models of the human brain. -
Ryan Pate, MD, MS
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Ryan Pate is a board-certified adult psychiatrist with eligibility for board certification in geriatric psychiatry. He completed his general adult psychiatry training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock and pursued his geriatric psychiatry fellowship at Stanford Health Care. In addition to his psychiatry training, he is actively participating in the psychoanalytical psychotherapy fellowship offered by the Palo Alto division of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Pate's research interests primarily focus on providing support for caregivers and developing group interventions tailored to older adults with mental health disorders. At Stanford, his professional practice primarily takes place in an outpatient setting, where he conducts appointments that involve a combination of medication management and psychotherapy interventions. Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Pate is dedicated to medical education.

BioAlok Patel is a pediatric hospitalist, medical journalist, on-camera expert, producer, and devotee of creative, engaging science communication tactics. He currently serves as the Faculty Director of Communications for the Department of Pediatrics. Through this role, he helps coordinate creative media strategies for awareness, education, advocacy, recruitment and more.
Dr. Patel has extensive experience in broadcast journalism, on-camera work, script writing, podcast hosting, media consulting, and designing social media campaigns and hopes to lend these skills to his work in public health messaging. He currently works as a pediatric hospitalist within the department of pediatrics at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Patel is a physician-scientist with a focus on community-engaged research (CEnR). She works to translate evidence to impact policies that can benefit children facing inequities due to their racial/ethnic background, poverty, and/or geography.
She leads the independently-funded research program, Partnerships for Research in Child Health, which collaborates with community partners to co-develop, implement, and evaluate innovative interventions aimed at preventing obesity and cardiometabolic diseases in low-income, minoritized populations. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Patel has led numerous studies to encourage healthy beverage intake among children and adolescents. These studies include analyses of large national data sets, conduct of randomized controlled trials in schools, child care, and community settings to examine how interventions to increase children’s intake of water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages impact child health, and the evaluation of policy efforts to improve the healthfulness of beverages offered in schools and community settings.
Long before the Flint water crisis, Dr. Patel was working with partners to address nitrate and arsenic contamination in drinking water supplies in California’s San Joaquin Valley, a rural region home to many low-income Latinx farm-working families. She secured funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to collaborate with researchers, nonprofits, water utilities, families, and advocates to develop innovative solutions to drinking water contamination in the region, helping to lead to the Agua4All program. The Agua4All initiative increased access to safe drinking water by installing filtered water stations in schools and community sites. The program’s success led to its national expansion and informed a $16.3 million-dollar water in schools grant program as well as California legislation to improve safe water access in public schools. Dr. Patel’s work with collaborators and communities was recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Drink Up campaign and featured in Stanford Medicine’s award-winning magazine.
As an expert in CEnR, Dr. Patel leads initiatives at Stanford. She is Director of the Office of Community-Engaged Research at Stanford's Maternal and Child Health Research Institute. In this role, she is helping to lead several initiatives, including expanding grant funding for CEnR and implementing capacity-building training programs for both community partners and the Stanford community. She also serves as Associate Dean of Research in Stanford’s School of Medicine, where she works to enhance community engagement across the university. Dr. Patel is a Co-Investigator on Stanford’s Clinical Translational Sciences Award. She also helps lead mentoring of fellows and junior faculty in CEnR.
Dr. Patel has a diverse funding portfolio ranging from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Healthy Eating Research Program, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Patel has presented her research to local, national and international audiences. She has also been recognized for her research with awards from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill School of Public Health. -

Lisa Patel
Clinical Associate Professor, Pediatrics
BioLisa Patel received her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University. After college, she worked in Egypt, Brazil, and India on international development projects with community-based organizations and non-profits, focusing on conservation and development efforts. She then obtained her Master's in Environmental Sciences from the Yale School of the Environment and went on to be a Presidential Management Fellow for the Environmental Protection Agency, coordinating the US Government's efforts on clean air and safe drinking water projects in South Asia in collaboration with the World Health Organization for which she was awarded the Trudy A. Specinar Award.
Realizing the critical and inextricable links between children's health and environmental issues, she obtained her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed her residency in pediatrics at UCSF. For the last several years, she has used her extensive experience working for government, community organizations, and non-profits to advocate for children's health priorities in the US. She is previously the co-chair for the American Academy of Pediatrics Advocacy Committee, California Chapter 1 (AAP-CA1) and in her time helped launch the inaugural Advocating for Children Together conference for Northern California that became a yearly occurrence. She co-founded the Climate and Health Committee for AAP-CA1, and is a member of the Executive Committee for the AAP's national Council on Environmental Health and Climate Change. In these roles, she has co-led successfully introducing board certification materials on climate change into the American Board of Pediatrics, and written policy statements and book chapers for the AAP on plant-forward diets and climate-smart schools. She is formerly the rotation director for the pediatric resident's Community Pediatrics and Child Advocacy Rotation. Her extensive work in local advocacy was recognized by Stanford Children’s Health Advocacy Award in 2023.
She is currently the Executive Director for the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health and maintains a clinical practice as a pediatric hospitalist caring for newborns, premature infants, and children requiring hospitalization. She serves on several boards and commissions, including Our Children's Trust, the legal organization that represented youth in Held v. Montana, Undaunted K12 whose mission is to facilitate climate-smart schools throughout the country, and the National Commission on Climate and Workforce Health which empowers businesses to protect their workers from mounting threats to their health from climate change. She is frequently asked to advise and review on topics including sustainable healthcare, early childhood development and climate, vegetarian and plant-forward diets, and communicating climate change as a health threat.
Communications remains a central part of her work, and she serves as a Science Mom to talk to other parents and caretakers about the health harms of climate change. Her work has also appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the New York Times, the LA Times, Bloomberg News, and multiple state and local outlets. She is interviewed regularly for her expertise on climate, health, and equity for major national media outlets like the Washington Post, US News and World Report, and CNN, among others. -
Meeta Raman Patel

BioDr. Patel has been working with children with autism and other disabilities for over 20 years. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Dr. Patel received a BS degree from the University of California at Davis in 1996 in Psychology with an emphasis in Biology. She continued her graduate training in Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. Dr. Patel received her PhD in Psychology with an emphasis in Behavior Analysis.
She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2001. Dr. Patel joined the faculty at the Marcus and Kennedy Krieger Institutes in 2001 and Emory University School of Medicine in 2002. Dr. Patel was a case manager in the Pediatric Feeding Disorders and Early Intervention Programs at the Marcus and Kennedy Krieger Institutes from 2001-2003. In 2003, she started Clinic 4 Kidz, which is a home-based Interdisciplinary Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program. Currently, she serves as the Executive Director of Clinic 4 Kidz.
Her research and clinical interests focus on treating feeding problems in children who have underlying medical issues (e.g., prematurity, failure to thrive [FTT], tube dependence, gastroesophageal reflux [GER], food allergies, etc.). In addition, she has expertise in working with children with autism, more specifically treating food selectivity by type and/or texture.
She currently serves on the editorial board of Behavioral Development which is a journal of the American Psychological Association. She formerly served on the editorial boards for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and Education and Treatment of Children. Dr. Patel also serves as a guest reviewer for several journals. She has published over 20 research studies in peer-reviewed journals and has authored two invited book chapters. Dr. Patel has also been invited to present at numerous conferences and at various hospitals all over the country. -

Michele Lanpher Patel

BioMichele L. Patel, PhD is an Instructor at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Her research focuses on optimizing digital health interventions for treating & preventing obesity. She is particularly interested in improving engagement in these interventions and examining the impact of psychosocial factors on treatment success.
Dr. Patel received a K23 career development award from NIH (2022-2027). This work investigates the most potent combination of self-monitoring strategies in a behavioral weight loss intervention for adults with overweight or obesity. Dr. Patel is interested in using digital tools such as commercial apps, wearables, text-messaging, and telehealth to improve access to and engagement in treatment.
Dr. Patel received her BA in psychology from Duke University in 2010 and her PhD in clinical psychology from Duke in 2018. She completed her clinical internship at the VA Palo Alto, specializing in behavioral medicine, and her postdoctoral fellowship at the Stanford Prevention Research Center.

BioDr. Zara M. Patel is Director of Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery and a Professor of Otolaryngology and, by courtesy, of Neurosurgery at Stanford. She was born and raised in St. Louis, completed her MD at the Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Oregon and completed her residency training in otolaryngology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY. After pursuing fellowship training in rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery at Stanford University, she was recruited to join the Emory University faculty in Atlanta in 2011. After four years, the rhinology division recruited her back to the West coast to rejoin the department here at Stanford University in 2015.
Dr. Patel is an expert in advanced endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery. She treats patients with a wide variety of rhinologic complaints, including chronic sinus infection or inflammation, sinus disease that has failed medical therapy, sinus disease that has failed prior surgical therapy, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, benign and and malignant sinus and skull base tumors, as well as olfactory disorders.
She has served as Chair of the Education Committee and Member of the Board of Directors for the American Rhinologic Society, is current Chair of the Rhinology and Allergy Education Committee for the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, and has developed a multitude of educational materials for both physicians and patients to help them better understand rhinologic disorders. She is passionate about educating patients to allow them to make the best decisions about their own care, leading to better outcomes.
Dr. Patel has published widely in topics such as avoiding complications in endoscopic sinus surgery, chronic rhinosinusitis in the immunosuppressed patient population, new devices and techniques for endoscopic skull base surgery, and olfactory dysfunction. She continues to perform research in these areas, and is currently collaborating with neuroscientists and engineers to develop technology that she hopes will eventually help cure patients with smell loss, and potentially even help those with neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. -
Margot Paul
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Paul is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She received her undergraduate degree from Tulane University where she graduated magna cum laude with departmental honors in psychology. She then received a master of science degree in behavioral health psychology the following year, after partaking in the 4+1 master's program. She graduated with her doctor of psychology degree from the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium, where she won the award for Outstanding Overall Student (2021). She completed her clinical psychology doctoral internship at the Sepulveda VA in Los Angeles and her postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine.
During her postdoctoral year she continued her research on using virtual reality (VR) as a method of engaging in behavioral activation for individuals with depression. Dr. Paul began her VR work in 2017 after joining Dr. Kim Bullock’s Virtual Reality-Immersive Technology Clinic & Laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Paul won the Cheryl Koopman Dissertation of the Year Award for designing and implementing a feasibility study and three-arm pilot randomized controlled trial to examine the feasibility of using a VR headset as a way to administer behavioral activation therapy for participants with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder. She presented her past and ongoing research findings as a speaker at Shift Medical 2021: Virtual Medical XR Congress and Expo (2021), Stanford Psychiatry Grand Rounds (2022), IVRHA’s 7th Annual Virtual Reality and Healthcare Global Symposium (2023), VMed23 (2023), ADAA (2023), and CYPSY26 (2023). Dr. Paul has worked and consulted with VR companies and local Bay Area startups in the technology and mental health space. She has published on her virtual reality work.
Clinically, she is interested in working with adults with anxiety and mood disorders, interpersonal difficulties, health-related difficulties, and/or perfectionistic tendencies. Dr. Paul has experience working with high-performance individuals, such as healthcare providers and student athletes. She practices using predominantly cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral therapies, but integrates various skills depending on the presentation and need of each unique individual. -

Arogyaswami Paulraj
Professor (Research) of Electrical Engineering, Emeritus
BioProf. Arogyaswami Paulraj is an Emeritus Professor at Stanford University. Paulraj's legacy is deeply intertwined with the evolution of wireless communication. His groundbreaking work on MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology laid the foundation for today's ubiquitous 4G/5G networks and high-speed Wi-Fi.
Paulraj's journey began in the Indian Navy, where he served from 1965 to 1991. During this time, he led the development of the APSOH anti-submarine sonar system and established three key R&D labs for the Indian government. His contributions earned him the prestigious Padma Bhushan award, India's third highest civilian honor.
Following his naval career, Paulraj joined Stanford University as a postdoctoral researcher. His research focus shifted to wireless communication, where he made groundbreaking contributions to MIMO technology. MIMO enables data transmission using multiple antennas, significantly increasing network capacity and data rates.
Paulraj's innovation has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the 2024 Royal Acad. Eng. Prince Philip Medal, the 2023 IET Faraday Medal, the 2014 Marconi Prize, and the 2011 IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal. He is also a fellow of nine national academies in engineering, sciences, and the arts, and an inductee of the US Patent Office’s National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Currently, Paulraj continues to contribute to technological advancement. He chairs several committees for the Government of India, focusing on the Indian Semiconductor Mission and Core ICT initiatives. His dedication to research and development continues to shape the future of wireless communication. -

Current efforts are focused on medical applications of MRI where real-time interactive imaging is important. Two examples are cardiac imaging, and the interactive guidance of interventional procedures. Specific interests include rapid methods for the excitation and acquisition of the MR signal, and the reconstruction of images from the data acquired using these approaches.

BioDr. Payrovi is a physician practicing Integrative and Functional Medicine at Stanford’s Center for Integrative Medicine. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UCLA and completed her medical education at UC San Diego in 2003. She completed a residency in Anesthesiology at USC in 2007. Dr. Payrovi is board certified in Anesthesiology, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, as well as Integrative Medicine.
