Currently researching the gut microbiome and how it affects different colorectal pathologies and surgical outcomes, specifically in the context of inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer.
Previous work focused on prevention and treatment of anal and rectal cancer, on the interaction between HPV infection and anal neoplasia, and in optimizing surgical outcomes in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer.
J Kenneth Salisbury, Jr.

BioSalisbury worked on the development of the Stanford-JPL Robot Hand, the JPL Force Reflecting Hand Controller, the MIT-WAM arm, and the Black Falcon Surgical Robot. His work with haptic interface technology led to the founding of SensAble Technology, producers of the PHANToM haptic interface and software. He also worked on the development of telerobotic systems for dexterity enhancement in the operating room. His current research focuses on human-machine interaction, cooperative haptics, medical robotics, and surgical simulation.

BioMarzena Sasnal, PhD, MA, is a qualitative & mixed methods-oriented social scientist, experienced in health services, medical education, and migration research with publication record, grant support, and extensive administrative experience. Dr. Sasnal currently works as Social Science Researcher at the S-SPIRE Center and is thrilled to contribute to research aiming to improve public health. Before joining Stanford, she studied the adaptation processes of highly skilled migrants in Silicon Valley. Dr. Sasnal collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and assists principal investigators with designing, conducting, and overseeing qualitative and mixed methods research projects. Additionally, she provides instruction and consultation on research methods and techniques. Dr. Sasnal has contributed to academic and grant research projects on various topics: medical education, implementation & evaluation science, innovations in care, patient-provider communication, patient-centered care, palliative care, among others.
Nazish Sayed MD, PhD

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Sayed Laboratory is focused on the development of novel technologies that drive innovation in regenerative medicine, disease modeling, and drug testing in vascular biology. The lab conducts translational research in vascular biology and aims to understand the role of the vasculature in the development of cardiac diseases, including those due to inherited genetic variants or environmental insults such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension. The lab employs the human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology to generate patient-specific vascular cells (endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells) as an alternative to animal models providing a human tissue surrogate for research that is scalable and sustainable. By employing this unique platform, the lab also investigates the role of chemotherapeutic agents (anti-cancer drugs) on the vasculature. Dr. Sayed’s lab has also established an endothelial regeneration program, where they leverage the innate immune system to regenerate endothelial cells from human fibroblasts.
Work from the lab has led to seminal discoveries in the areas of 1) Nitric oxide (NO) biology, (2) vascular biology, (3) stem cell biology, (4) cardiovascular disease modeling (5) cardio-oncology.

Carolyn Dacey Seib, MD, MAS

BioDr. Carolyn Dacey Seib is a board certified general surgeon and fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon. Her practice is focused on surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands.
Dr. Seib has clinical and research expertise in the surgical management of endocrine disorders in older adults, including primary hyperparathyroidism, thyroid cancer, and hyperthyroidism. Dr. Seib completed her undergraduate education at Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude in 2004. She received her M.D. at the New York University School of Medicine and then attended residency in General Surgery at UCSF. Dr. Seib also completed a fellowship in Endocrine Surgery at UCSF, during which she cared for patients with complex disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands.
Dr. Seib focuses on providing individualized care for patients with thyroid malignancy, hyperthyroidism, primary hyperparathyroidism, and adrenal disorders. She has received funding from the National Institute on Aging and the American Thyroid Association to study the surgical management of endocrine disorders in older adults and has a number of peer-reviewed journal publications on this topic that have received national attention, including being featured in the New York Times.

BioSubhro K. Sen, MD, Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in biomedical engineering. He went on to receive his medical degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. After medical school, he completed a yearlong peripheral nerve research fellowship under Dr. Susan Mackinnon at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He completed his postgraduate training in general surgery at Indiana University, followed by plastic and reconstructive surgery at Johns Hopkins University. He finished his training with a hand and upper extremity surgery fellowship at Stanford University.
Dr. Sen’s general clinical interests are in reconstructive surgery, microvascular surgery, and hand and upper extremity surgery. His practice includes: post-traumatic extremity reconstruction; post-oncologic reconstruction of the head and neck, trunk and extremities; perforator flap surgery; and melanoma surgery. He is medical director of the Advanced Wound Care Center at Stanford Health Care. As a hand surgeon in the Robert A. Chase Hand and Upper Limb Center, he has interests in hand trauma, degenerative conditions, peripheral nerve injuries, and complex upper extremity flap reconstruction.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Sen is involved in research, publication, and teaching. His peer-reviewed research includes studies on extremity reconstruction, peripheral nerve regeneration, and he has authored a number of book chapters on a variety of plastic and hand surgery topics. He has a strong interest in medical device innovation and is currently a faculty fellow in the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign.
Dr. Sen is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery.

BioKreeti Shankar, MPH is a Social Science Research Professional with the Stanford-Surgery Policy Improvement Research & Education Center (S-SPIRE). She received her Master of Public Health degree focused on Biostatistics and Epidemiology from University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in 2019. Since then, she joined Stanford as a Clinical Research Coordinator working with Dr. Kin on her various prehabilitation studies aimed at improving surgical outcome and long-term overall health through pre-surgical effective and accessible exercise and nutrition interventions. In October 2021, Kreeti took on a new role at S-SPIRE, where she continues to work with Dr. Kin in addition to taking on new responsibilities, bringing her background and expertise in implementing complex clinics trials at Stanford as well as her quantitative and qualitative experience with her. Kreeti is passionate about research and excited to continue her journey at S-SPIRE to make advancements in healthcare through research that informs policy and implementation.

Clifford Charles Sheckter

BioDr. Cliff Sheckter is a California native, growing up in the Eastern Sierra. He graduated from UCLA with a BS in Anthropology and earned summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors. He attended USC (Keck) for medical school on an academic scholarship and graduated valedictorian with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He fell in love with plastic surgery and particularly burn care while at LAC+USC and matriculated into the Stanford Plastic Surgery Residency in 2013. While in residency, he pursued a fellowship in Health Systems Design at Stanford’s Clinical Excellence Research Center, which ignited his interest in health services research. During residency, Dr. Sheckter investigated health systems outcomes in burn care and reconstructive surgery. He pursued additional training in Surgical Critical Care at the University of Washington with a focus on integrated, complex burn care. There he investigated quality of life outcomes in burn survivors with a particular focus in financial toxicity.
Dr. Sheckter’s current research involves improving the quality of life for burn survivors and investigating the relationship between healthcare financial structures and the value of healthcare delivery.
Dr. Sheckter is an intensivist in the Trauma/Surgical ICU at Stanford University Medical Center. He also practices at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center where he is the Associate Director of the Regional Burn Center. In addition, he is a staff surgeon at the VA Palo Alto.

BioDr. Stern earned his medical degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2008. He completed his general surgery residency at The University of Chicago in 2015, which included a two-year research fellowship in Translational Systems Biology. He then completed his vascular and endovascular surgery fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center/Weill Cornell Medicine, in 2017. Dr. Stern is board certified in both general surgery and vascular surgery.
Dr. Stern joined Stanford Vascular Surgery in 2017 as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery. His primary practice is at Stanford Health Care.
Dr. Stern’s clinical and academic interests are in the treatment of aortic disease. He is involved in the development of novel treatment strategies for complex aortic pathologies, and serves as principal investigator on several clinical trials. He is also involved in clinical research, examining contemporary practice patterns and outcomes from endovascular and open surgical interventions.

BioKimberly Stone, MD is a board certified General Surgeon who specializes in breast surgical oncology and melanoma surgery. She treats all conditions related to breast health including: breast cancer, high risk prevention and screening, benign breast disease, and conditions related to lactation.
Dr. Stone completed a breast surgical oncology fellowship at UCSF, where she trained in all aspects of breast surgical oncology, and melanoma surgery. Dr Stone performs all types of breast surgery including total skin and nipple sparing mastectomy, wireless lumpectomy, benign breast disease excisions and axillary surgery. She works closely with plastic and reconstructive surgeons to offer women the best possible cosmetic options and results following treatment. Dr Stone performs melanoma surgery including wide local excision, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and lymph node dissections for melanoma.
Dr. Stone strives to deliver compassionate, patient-centered surgical care that is expert and evidence-based while at the same time customized to the unique needs of each patient. She believes that patient empowerment and education are at the heart of an excellent care team.
