Sven van Egmond
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dermatology
BioSven van Egmond, MD, PhD is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Dermatology and the Center for Population Health Sciences at the Stanford School of Medicine working with Prof. Eleni Linos.
After he obtained his medical degree from Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, he pursued his doctoral degree at the Department of Dermatology of Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam under the supervision of Prof. Tamar Nijsten. His dissertation was entitled "Evaluation of Skin Cancer Care: Integrating Different Perspectives" and focused on reducing unnecessary follow-up visits after low-risk skin cancer while incorporating both the patients’ and physicians’ perspectives. Whilst working on his thesis, Dr. van Egmond worked as a resident not in training and co-founded a patient organization for patients with non-melanoma skin cancer in the Netherlands.
His current work focuses on active surveillance of older adults with low-risk skin cancer to reduce unnecessary treatments. His ultimate goal is to minimize patient suffering by foregrounding patient voices and insisting upon the care of patients with skin cancer as individuals with precise needs and desires.
When he is not working, Dr. van Egmond enjoys his spare time hiking and exploring the Bay Area.
