Steven Z. Chao

Staff, Adult NeurologyBioDr. Steven Chao graduated from UCLA in biochemistry with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude. He then finished his combined MD/PhD training program from Chicago Medical School/Rosalind Franklin University with AOA Honors. Following his neurology residency at Stanford, he continued with a behavior neurology fellowship training at UCSF Memory and Aging Center, where he started research in dementia.
Currently, He serves as a staff neurologist at the Palo Alto VA and with an appointment at the Stanford Department of Neurology as a clinical professor (affiliated). His current research interest is in early imaging diagnosis of dementia and early treatment/prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive treatment in traumatic brain injury, and alternative treatments for headache.
Community and academic education about dementia and cognitive health has always been his passion, and he continues to publish research articles and book chapters to support clinical education. -
Tina Duong MPT, PhD

BioI am a senior research scientist and physical therapist with over 20 years of experience, specializing in neuromuscular clinical research. Currently, I am the Director of clinical outcomes and research developments within the Neuromuscular division and Co-Director, Stanford Innovative Genetic Neurologic Investigation and Treatment Evaluation Center. My doctoral studies focused on understanding the impact of contracture development on subsequent musculoskeletal and biomechanical changes that influence overall functional outcomes. I am deeply committed to advancing my work by creating innovative outcome measures that bridge the gap with traditional metrics for a range of neuromuscular disorders. Furthermore, I am enthusiastic about investigating the therapeutic advantages of incorporating rehabilitation and exercise as complementary treatments for managing neuromuscular conditions.
In my professional pursuits, I prioritize integrity, work ethic, humility, empathy, leadership, initiative, and drive in all my collaborations. Inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem “"to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded", I strive to contribute meaningfully in both my personal and professional endeavors. While it can be challenging to articulate one's accomplishments and impact, I aspire to uphold the values and principles that guide me, serving as a compass in navigating both my personal and professional path. I find it difficult to summarize my own accomplishments or impact. So I would like to share a recommendation that was written about me in which I hope to refer back as my north star in both my personal and professional life.
"Dr Tina Duong is a world renown physiotherapist, master trainer, clinical investigator, scientific academician and most importantly an INCREDIBLE person. I had the privilege of working with her side by side during the development of a new therapy for spinal muscular atrophy. Her determination to help the scientific community, patients and carers is truly inspiring. Her knowledge and skills place her at the vanguard of clinical translation of data and meaningful patient outcomes. Her capabilities span everything from publications, meeting moderation, speaker events and clinical training. She has instinctive clinical intuition which allows her to support drug development and translation in both early stage and also during pivotal trial design, data interpretation and patient care and management. Her ethical and moral considerations of medicine and science means she is 100% focused on each individual to support them as best as possible and this is obvious from everyone who has worked or knows her. Her passion, energy and knowledge inspires people, teams and countries! Wherever Tina goes and whatever she embarks on now or in the future, the value she brings is like no one else and her impact is immediate. BioDr. Garima J. Lupas is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neuropsychologist with Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor (affiliated) in the Department of Neurology & Neurological Sciences, Division of Neuropsychology at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Lupas specializes in conducting neuropsychological assessments for a variety of conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases, movement disorders, psychiatric disorders, cerebrovascular disease, and infectious neurological diseases. She also performs presurgical evaluations for deep brain stimulation and epilepsy surgical candidates. She takes a comprehensive approach to assessing cognitive and behavioral function, considering each person’s overall well-being and quality of life when making treatment recommendations.
Dr. Lupas has studied the effects of age and dementia on cognitive function, especially memory. Her research has also assessed how age impacts thinking, social, and daily life skills in people with schizophrenia. Additionally, Dr. Lupas has examined the role of culture in identity and intimacy development among young adults from India, China, and the United States.
Dr. Lupas has published her findings in peer-reviewed journals, including The Clinical Neuropsychologist and Identity: An International Journal of Theory and Research. She has also presented at numerous conferences across the nation, including meetings of the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology (AACN), American Psychological Association, and International Neuropsychological Society. Using her expertise in aging, she has authored a book chapter in the Encyclopedia of Geropsychology on depression and cognition in older adults.

Selvi R. Paulraj, PhD

Dr. Paulraj specializes in assessing a variety of neurological conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease. Sr Res Scientist-Basic Life, Adult NeurologyCurrent Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Petritsch lab broadly investigates underlying causes for the intra-tumoral heterogeneity and immune suppression in brain tumors from a neuro-developmental perspective. Defective cell fate decisions fuel the intra-humoral heterogeneity and plasticity in human brain tumors and may contribute to immune suppression. We use patient-derived models as avatars to study how brain cells control the fate of their progeny, whereby we unravel novel points of vulnerabilities in brain tumor cells.

Simon Tan, PsyD, ABPP

BioSimon Tan, PsyD, ABPP, ABAP, MS is Clinical Assistant Professor (Affiliated) in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is a Diplomate in Clinical Neuropsychology, American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and American Board of Assessment Psychology. He received his bachelor's degree at Dartmouth College, doctorate in clinical psychology from Yeshiva University, and completed a pre-doctoral internship in clinical psychology at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tan also completed post-doctoral fellowships specializing in clinical neuropsychology in both adult inpatient and outpatient settings at the Behavioral Neurology Unit, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Cambridge Hospital at Harvard. He later obtained a postdoctoral master of science in clinical psychopharmacology from Alliant International University. Before coming to Stanford, he was a rehabilitation neuropsychologist at NYU Medical Center.
