1. Focused ultrasound for peripheral nervous system modulation- We are interested in the potential of focused ultrasound to modulate peripheral nerves and improve both acute and chronic pain.
2. Pediatric perioperative outcomes- Our goals are to understand A) how various perioperative pain management strategies affect outcomes in children who undergo surgery and B) whether disparities in the perioperative pain management of children occur. -

Alexandra Bor, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Alexandra Bor is a board-certified, fellowship-trained anesthesiologist with Stanford Health Care. She is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Bor specializes in anesthesia and pain management, with an emphasis on pediatric anesthesiology.
Her research focuses on improving surgical techniques and patient experience during procedures.
Dr. Bor has published her research in several peer-reviewed journals, including Anesthesia & Analgesia, Canadian Journal of Urology, Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, and Urology. She has also contributed chapters to “Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures” and presented to her peers at national meetings.
Dr. Bor is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia. -
Amber Noelle Borucki
Clinical Associate Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Amber Borucki is an anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist whose focus is chronic pain management in children and adolescents/young adults. She focuses on reducing or managing pain from chronic conditions in children or pain that occurs after surgery. Dr. Borucki completed her medical degree at Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL. She attended anesthesia residency at the University of Chicago. She completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Boston Children's Hospital as well as a combined adult/pediatric pain medicine fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital, Brigham Women's Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Borucki worked for 5 years as a pediatric anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital from 8/2017-5/2023. She was the Director of the Pediatric Anesthesia Service at UCSF during this time. Dr. Borucki transitioned to Stanford Medicine Children's Health in May 2023 and her clinical duties include working in the Emeryville satellite pediatric pain clinic, pediatric operating room, and pediatric pain inpatient service. Dr. Borucki is the Director for Pediatric Pain Education at Stanford, and has partnered with the Adult Pain Medicine program at Stanford to develop an exciting new pediatric pain fellowship track spanning Stanford Health Care and Stanford Medicine Children's Health. She will be the program director of of the pediatric component of this track.
Notable accomplishments include developing and co-chairing the UCSF Benioff Transbay Pediatric Pain Management Committee, development of the pediatric establishment of an adolescent/young adult transitional pain clinic, and serving on the Bridge to One Bay project to standardize pain care across all UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital locations. Dr. Borucki also was instrumental in helping UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital obtain ChildKind designation, a prestigious designation for a hospital indicating that it prioritizes pediatric pain care. She also has been instrumental in the development of the new Pediatric Pain Medicine Fellowship Track at Stanford.
Dr. Borucki has recently collaborated with Dr. Lauren Harrison of the Biobehavioral Pediatric Pain laboratory and together they were awarded a Pediatric Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine Pilot Award to examine biopsychosocial demographic data around chronic pediatric back pain. Their study (PEDS-Back) is now enrolling patients through the pediatric pain medicine clinic.
Dr. Borucki has been a member of the medical advisory council for the Make a Wish Bay Area chapter for almost 10 years. She is currently serving as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine (SPPM) and also served as the program director for the 12th annual SPPM meeting. Dr. Borucki has also served on several committees through the American Society of Anesthesiologists, California Society of Anesthesiologists, and Women Innovators in Pain Medicine national society. Dr. Borucki served as an editorial board member for Paediatric and Neonatal Pain. -
Alyssa Burgart (she/her)
Clinical Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioWith double board certification in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology and over 20 years of experience in bioethics, Dr. Alyssa Burgart is a unique cross-disciplinary clinician-scholar. Dr. Burgart holds numerous leadership positions, including Associate Director of Pediatric Ethics at the Laurie J. Girand Center for Biomedical Ethics, Medical Director of Ethics for the Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, and physician co-chair of the Stanford Children’s Ethics Committee. She actively supports the Program in Medical Humanities and the Arts and is the Associate Director for Symposium. In the undergraduate school, she serves as affiliate faculty in the Stanford Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in the School of Humanities and Sciences.
Dr. Burgart is an expert in difficult conversations and skillfully mediating complex choices with families and healthcare providers. She speaks nationally on bioethics, relationship-centered communication, trauma-informed care, moral distress/moral injury, disability justice, gender equity, and reproductive justice issues.
Dr. Burgart's unwavering dedication to pediatric trauma mitigation is exemplified in her committed to finding the most successful way for each child to interact with the anesthesia team, ensuring an overall positive experience and reducing the risk of medical trauma. She advocates on behalf of children with unique sensory and behavioral needs. Her clinical focus within pediatric anesthesiology is abdominal solid organ transplant.
Dr. Burgart's influence in the field of bioethics extends beyond her clinical and academic roles. As an associate editor and digital media editor at the American Journal of Bioethics, her work is instrumental in shaping the discourse on ethical healthcare practices. Her writing, featured in JAMA, The Washington Post, USA Today, Slate, and Ms. Magazine, and her newsletter, Poppies & Propofol, are all part of her mission to enhance public education on bioethics issues in public life. She frequently engages with journalists to ensure accurate and comprehensive reporting on complex medical ethics issues. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research pursuits are focused on system based improvement projects. At Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford, I use system based approaches to improve the quality of care patients receive in the perioperative area and in the ICUs, with a focus on safe transitions of care. Through the Department of Graduate Medical Education at Stanford School of Medicine, I advise residency and fellowship programs on evidence based methods to improve their programs, with a focus on mentorship.

BioGenevieve D’souza MD, FASA is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Pediatric Anesthesia division of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University. She is a Board-certified Pediatric Anesthesiologist , Fellowship trained Pediatric Pain Doctor, and trained in Medical Acupuncture.
She is a practicing Chronic Pediatric Pain Doctor at Stanford Medicine Children's Health and is also part of the Acute Pain Service. She is the Interim Medical Director of the Pediatric Pain Division. She is also the Director of the Pediatric Anesthesia Resource Center at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.
She is also the Senior Editor for the Visual Pearl Series For the Society of Pediatric Pain Medicine and on the Board of Directors for Society of Pediatric Pain Medicine. -

My research focuses on outcomes in pediatric and adult surgical patients, management of pain and use of opioids in the perioperative period, and prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. My clinical care and research are both grounded in a desire to provide safe, equitable healthcare to all patients, particularly during high-risk or stressful events such as surgery.

Eve Edelstein
Adjunct Professor, Pediatric Anesthesiology
BioDr. Edelstein’s research and practice focus on the measurable impact of the built environment on human performance, health, wellbeing. Eve’s ongoing collaboration with a national quality improvement study explores the impact of noise in operating rooms with Stanford, Harvard, Vanderbilt, Pennsylvania, and other members of SPA.
Eve's recent work with Google and the International WELL Building Institute, explores how the built environment can support the unique abilities of providers and the people they serve to enhance performance and outcomes.
Dr. Edelstein's clinical service and doctoral research at University College London and the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, and at the Harvard MIT hearing sciences lab developed and used electrophysiological techniques to show the brain’s efferent control of cochlear function. Eve's degrees in in Anthropology (University California Berkeley), and Master of Architecture offer a unique background for her contributions as a Board member of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture, the AIA College of Fellows Latrobe Prize on circadian design, the Berkeley Teaching Prize on Neuro-Universal Design, and the Calit2 Strategic Opportunities Award for Virtual Visual and Acoustic hospital design for the University of California San Diego.
Dr. Edelstein co-founded Clinicians for Design and Neuro-Architecture, and contributed to award-winning hospital designs, including master planning through architectural and interior solutions for top-tier academic and medical centers, educational facilities, and building projects in the US, Canada, UK, and China. -

Cornelius Botha Groenewald
Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine (Pediatric)
BioDr. Groenewald is Director of Pediatric Anesthesiology Research at Stanford University School of Medicine. He conducts clinical research that crosses several areas related to child health, including epidemiology, health services research, pediatric pain, sleep deficiency, and opioid use behaviors. His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, International Association for the Study of Pain, and the Society for Pediatric Anesthesiology. His work on pediatric pain, sleep disturbance, and opioid use has been published in JAMA Pediatrics, Pediatrics, PAIN, Journal of Pain, SLEEP, and JAMA Psychiatry. Dr. Groenewald holds national leadership positions in the United States Association for the Study of Pain, including being elected as inaugural Chair of the Pediatric Special Interest Group in 2020 and co-chair of the Advocacy committee in 2022. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Pain and Pediatric Anesthesiology.
