Hector Rodrigo Mendez

BioDr. Hector Rodrigo Mendez is a Medical Geneticist from Argentina. Rodrigo completed a residency program in Medical Genetics at Centro Nacional de Genetica Medica – ANLIS (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and a Master’s program in Medical Molecular Biology at Buenos Aires University.
Rodrigo continued his scientific career at a German Genomic Start-up, working as a human geneticist and providing his experience in rare disorders, genomic data (WGS/WES/gene panels) analysis, variant interpretation, and its integration with a deep focus on genotype-phenotype correlation.
Rodrigo’s areas of expertise are rare disorders, NGS technology, Whole Genome Sequencing analysis, and ACMG interpretation guidelines, and his research aims are:
- Collection and analysis of clinical data through deep-learning phenotyping approaches.
- Multi-omic data integration to elucidate complex and rare genetic disorders.
- International collaborations to break down barriers to research participation amongst those who have been under-represented.
At Stanford University, under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Wheeler, he is conducting his postdoctoral research studies to achieve his scientific goals. -
Samuel Montalvo Hernandez

BioI am a clinical exercise physiologist and sport biomechanist interested in human exercise and sports performance. I am a certified performance and sport scientist (CPSS) and a certified strength and conditioning specialist with distinction (CSCS, *D) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In 2022, I was honored with the 2022 Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship. As a research exercise and sport scientist, I am interested in understanding the mechanical, molecular, and physiological mechanisms of human performance. Additionally, I am interested in creating new and practical training methods to improve human exercise and sports performance.

Eric Mou, MD

BioI was born in Oregon and raised in Iowa, where I cultivated my initial interest in science and medicine. I completed my undergraduate degree and medical school at the University of Iowa before heading to Stanford University for my internal medicine residency and oncology fellowship training. I chose this field to try my best in assisting patients during times of great need, and working to understand what is of greatest importance to them as they navigate their unique journey of cancer care. My clinical focus is in the care of patients with lymphoma and other hematologic cancers. My scholarly interests include better understanding the efficacy cancer therapeutics, improving patients' experience as the proceed through treatment, and promoting strength in medical education.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsUse electronic health records (EHRs) to identify and classify common ocular diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. We aim to develop an approach to accurately identify these conditions using EHRs. This will be followed by cluster analysis to identify novel subtypes of these conditions that have not been recognized before. Finally, we will develop an approach to extract outcome data from EHRs for patients with these conditions in the primary care setting.

Fateme Nateghi Haredasht

BioI am a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research. I earned my PhD in Biomedical Sciences from KU Leuven, Belgium. My research during my PhD program focused on machine learning applications in healthcare, particularly in the field of survival analysis.
My doctoral thesis was centered on the development of predictive models for critically ill patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). By leveraging electronic health record (EHR) data, we created personalized risk profiles for AKI survivors upon ICU discharge, leading to tailored follow-up plans. Additionally, we developed machine learning-based models to predict outcomes post-AKI, including progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and mortality.
In another study, we investigated the utilization of unlabeled data to enhance the accuracy of survival time predictions. By integrating partial supervision from censored data within a semi-supervised wrapper approach, we consistently achieved superior results. This approach has the potential to significantly improve survival outcome predictions, offering valuable insights for clinical decision-making.
In my current role at Stanford, I continue to advance the integration of machine learning in healthcare, collaborating with experts to improve patient care and outcomes. -

BioMadelena is a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research (BMIR). Her research aims to illuminate the evolving ethical and practical challenges among digital and emerging technologies (e.g., web- and app-based population health research, clinical AI solutions, blockchain for health data). Her work in the Boussard Lab focuses on discerning key factors for clinical AI solutions to flourish in practice—from the readiness of the datasets for machine learning research to the operational principles that are required for successful clinical deployment.

BioDr. Minh Nguyen joined the Prof. Jeffrey Glenn laboratory as a postdoctoral scholar in August 2022. In collaboration with Safaran ChEM-H Medicinal Chemistry Knowledge Center, his research objective is to harness the power of organic synthesis toward the development of novel antiviral therapies. Minh obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania under the direction of Prof. Amos B. Smith, III, where his doctoral work centered on the convergent total synthesis of two marine natural products nahuoic acids Cii and Dii.

Connor Galen O'Brien

BioDr. O'Brien is a native of Menlo Park, CA. He attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. At Columbia he was elected to both Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honors Societies. He completed an Internal Medicine residency as well as fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University. In his third year of fellowship, he was selected Chief Cardiology Fellow.
He is currently a post-doctoral fellow performing regenerative medicine research, specifically studying the role of exosomes in treating cardiomyopathy. In addition to his basic science research, he is also involved in human clinical trials investigating the role of stem cells in treating various forms of cardiomyopathy. -

I received my PhD in Yale University, where I studied the early events of retrovirus infection in animal models. Now in the Blish lab, I am investigating NK cell responses during HIV-1 infection and trying to manipulate the NK cells to target latently infected cells.

BioAs a doctor and researcher, I am driven by curiosity and intrigued by the unknown. In the clinics, my days are filled with ‘real-life biology’ and the joy of interacting with the most pure and honest people in the world: children. In the research lab, my curiosity is driven by the complexity of the disease cancer and it’s microenvironment. I am an unbiased thinker and can easily adapt plans and ideas based on obtained data. My pro-active attitude and eye for detail helped me master multiple complex techniques, start collaborations, and push projects to the next level. In my view, combining fundamental & translational research is the way forward to find a cure for every child with cancer. My postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University will therefore focus on the establishment of novel comprehensive organoid models for pediatric cancers.

Izabela Mauricio Rezende

BioI have a B.S. in Biology, M.Sc. in Immunology and Infectious diseases, Ph.D. in Microbiology. I am currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Stanford University School of Medicine, working with Dr. Jason Andrews at the new Stanford Pandemic Preparedness Hub, a fellowship I was awarded at the end of 2022. As part of a pandemic preparedness, We are tytrying to understand the potential viruses at risk of pandemic spread. Using disease modeling, epidemiological, and phylogenetic analysis, we study the genomic evolution and transmission dynamics of H5N1 avian influenza A after 2020.
I am in my third postdoctoral year at Stanford and completed the first two years with Dr. Desiree LaBeaud. I have a Ph.D. in Microbiology, with an emphasis in Virology, and a Master’s in Infectious Diseases. . My Ph.D. was conducted in Brazil, under the supervision of Dr. Betânia Drumond, and contemplated the virological and epidemiological aspects of yellow fever (YF) outbreak in Minas Gerais/BR in 2017-2018, combining laboratory, clinical, and data analysis (publications: DOI 10.1126/science.aat7115; DOI 10.1371/journal.pntd.0006538; DOI 10.1128/jcm.00254-22; DOI 10.3390/vaccines7040206; DOI 10.1186/s12985-019-1277-7). I came to Stanford University for my first postdoc with Dr. Desiree LaBeaud. For two years, I led an international NIH R01 project investigating the dynamics of the biggest YF outbreak in Brazil, including the description of a new syndrome, Late-relapsing hepatitis after yellow fever (DOI 10.3390/v12020222), and risk factors for severe YF. I was also involved in other projects regarding SARS-CoV-2 variants and disease severity in infants (DOI 10.3389/fmed.2022.896352), Rift Valley fever virus epidemiology in humans and animals in Kenya (DOI 10.1371/journal.pgph.0000505), and dengue virus evolution in Africa (ongoing Ph.D. candidate mentorship).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we also supported the Brazilian Ministry of Health with the SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis in human samples and also in the investigation of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA in surfaces of density public areas of Belo Horizonte. Since Nov/2018 I had been an editor in the journal Docência do Ensino Superior (RDES / GIZ / UFMG) and in Jan/2020 I became Editor-in-Chief. -

Rushil Shah, MBBS, DNB, MHS

BioRushil Shah, MBBS, DNB, MHS is actively pursuing a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University, CA awarded by the prestigious American Heart Association AF SFRN.
Dr. Shah’s team is trying to develop a CMR-compatible large animal isolated heart model (Langendorff’s Apparatus). Up until now they were working on developing a Shared Decision-Making Tool for AF Stroke Prevention as part of the ENHANCE-AF trial under Paul J. Wang, MD. Dr. Shah’s other projects are focused on pulsed field ablation of the heart and delineating clinical applications of Magneto-Cardiography in patients with cardiac arrhythmias.
Rushil recently completed another three-year long Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD, United States. Rushil conducted translational research centered on advancements in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging, VT Ablation, Atrial Fibrillation, Cardiac Sarcoidosis, Cardiac Sympathetic Denervation and Hypothermia Induction in the animal experiment lab at Johns Hopkins under the supervision of Harikrishna Tandri, MD, FACC.
Rushil secured his master’s degree in Medical Immunology & Molecular Microbiology from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School in Baltimore, MD, USA.
Previously, Rushil attended medical school at the Topiwala National Medical College & B.Y.L Nair Hospital in Mumbai, India and subsequently, completed his three-years of medicine residency there. Additionally, Dr. Shah has some experience of working as a Hospitalist in a Cardiology Care Unit (CCU) under the supervision of Yash Lokhandwala, MD, DM at Bandra HFH in Mumbai.
Dr. Shah recently got ECFMG-certified to actively practice medicine in the United States. Rushil is a member of the American Heart Association, Dallas, TX and the Heart Rhythm Society in Washington DC. Rushil aspires to complete his cardiology training and become a cardiac electrophysiologist here in the United States. -

BioI am currently a Postdoctoral Fellow with Dr. Thomas Quertermous at Stanford University. I have joined the lab with more than 7 years of research experience in the field of computational biology wherein I have worked with multi-omics data for multiple diseases to get a deeper understanding of the disease identification and progression.
My background in engineering and bioinformatics provide an excellent background for the studies proposed in this application, which proposes to investigate the genetics and genomics of smooth muscle cell biology in the context of vascular disease. I first pursued a Bachelor's in Biotechnology program at one of the premier institutes in India, Banasthali Vidyapeeth and received my degree in 2007. After qualifying with the IIT-JAM exam in 2010, I joined the Master’s in Science (Biotechnology) program at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in a program of engineering and technology. After my Master's, I joined Dr. Vinod Scaria’s lab at CSIR-IGIB as a Project Fellow. During the tenure as Project fellow from 2012-2014, I had the opportunity to work with different transcriptomics data from model organisms including zebrafish, rat and human cell lines to understand the role of long non-coding RNAs and miRNAs. I also worked on clinical datasets of autoimmune disorders. With one and half years of research experience and a UGC fellowship awarded through the NET-JRF examination, I continued working with Dr. Vinod Scaria to pursue my PhD. My research interest for the degree focused on the identification and characterization of circular RNAs, and this work has now been published in multiple manuscripts listed below. Over the years at CSIR-IGIB, I have had the chance to work on interesting ideas with multiple collaborating groups. One of them was Dr. Sridhar Sivasubbu, with whom I worked to understand the transcript-level interactions between mitochondria and the nucleus, using zebrafish as a model organism.
In view of my interest in the translational aspects of biology, I obtained the opportunity to work as part of the GUaRDIAN Consortium with Dr. Vinod Scaria and Dr. Sridhar Sivasubbu at CSIR-IGIB. This pioneering project is the largest network of researchers and clinicians in India pursuing sequencing patient DNAs to identify rare SNVs and structural variants responsible for muscular dystrophy in these patients. In the interest of advancing genomics in clinical and healthcare settings, I was selected as Intel Fellow 2019 to work for the Intel-IGIB collaboration focussing on “Accelerating Clinical Analysis and Interpretation of Genomic Data through advanced tools/libraries”. Our project was selected among top 3 from 50 premier research institutes and I was awarded the Intel-India Fellowship for a year to pursue this project. I was also part of the core team of IndiGen (Genomes for Public Health in India). With the spread of COVID-19 around the world, our group contributed by sequencing and analysing COVID19 genomes to get a better understanding of the disease and I had the opportunity to be part of the core team to analyse the viral sequencing datasets and viral assembly.
I am extremely pleased to have joined the Quertermous lab at Stanford to the study of the molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular disease. Work that I am pursuing in this laboratory, and proposed in this application, are directly in line with my personal aspiration to start an independent career in the field of scientific research to work on projects with high translational value and of interest to the public health. -
Benjamin Singer

BioBen Singer is a postdoctoral scholar with interests in mathematical epidemiology and global public health. Ben's research career began with an internship at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, where he applied quantitative skills he had learnt studying physics at the University of Oxford to the study of nematode locomotion. Ben further pursued quantitative methods in life sciences in the Interdisciplinary Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership at the University of Oxford, earning a DPhil (PhD equivalent) in mathematical methods for evaluating pandemic risk and control. During these studies he maintained an interest in global public health policy, interning with the UK government's Department for International Development, where he developed models of international COVID-19 vaccine distribution. Ben is now working in Nathan Lo's research group at Stanford, creating infectious disease models informing public health policy for schistosomiasis, hepatitis E, and other infections.

Robert Thibault

BioDr. Thibault studies how to increase the rigour and reproducibility of scientific research. His work focuses on developing and evaluating solutions to shortcomings in the research ecosystem. He completed a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at McGill University in 2019. His doctoral work focused on brain imaging, including neurofeedback, placebos, and suggestion. This work is outlined in his book, Casting Light on The Dark Side of Brain Imaging, co-edited with Dr. Amir Raz. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bristol University before joining the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford University (METRICS) in 2021. Diana Tordoff

BioDiana M. Tordoff, PhD, MPH is a postdoctoral scholar with The PRIDE Study (pridestudy.org) at the Stanford School of Medicine. She is an epidemiologist whose research focuses on LGBTQ+ health equity. Prior to joining The PRIDE Study, Diana was awarded an NIH Kirschstein National Research Service Fellowship for her doctoral dissertation, which examined the heterogeneity in HIV/STI prevalence, testing, and PrEP use among transgender and non-binary people and their partners in the US. Her interests include barriers and facilitators of healthcare access for LGBTQ+ communities, sexual and reproductive health, HIV/STI prevention, sexual orientation & gender identity (SOGI) measurement, phylogenetics and molecular epidemiology, and community-engaged research methods.

Laurens van de Wiel

BioLaurens van de Wiel is Dutch scientist from Berghem, The Netherlands. Laurens spent his undergrad in Software Development (BSc, Avans Hogeschool ‘s-Hertogenbosch) and Computing Science (MSc, Radboud University Nijmegen). Laurens continued his career at a start-up, where he created large-scale, real-time analytical software. Laurens continued on his academic trajectory at the Radboudumc in Nijmegen, where he started his PhD in bioinformatics.
During his PhD, Laurens integrated genetic data with protein 3D structures and protein domains. He utilized the skills he obtained before setting out on his academic trajectory; building large-scale, robust, reliable software. Exemplified by the MetaDome Web server (https://stuart.radboudumc.nl/metadome/). During his PhD, he developed novel methodologies for the interpretation of genetic variants of unknown clinical significance and, by integrating structural and evolutionary biology with genomics, Laurens identified 36 novel disease-gene associations for developmental disorders. These discoveries enabled diagnosis for over 500 families worldwide.
Laurens’ areas of expertise are (bioinformatic) software development, data integration of genetic variation with other omics, and his research aims are:
1.) Lessons long-learned in computer science aid computational biology
2.) Multi-omic data integration allows the impact measurement of genetic variation
3.) Diagnosing undiagnosed disorders will uncover novel insights into biology.
4.) International and multidisciplinary collaborations are key in diagnosing rare disorders.

Shai Waldrip

BioDr. Waldrip is a Propel Postdoctoral Scholar in the Boussard lab. Her research aims to develop a digital twin for breast cancer patients that will ultimately support the advancement of precision medicine and improve clinical decision-making and patient-centered care. Specifically, she will use machine learning, deep learning, and mechanistic modeling using multimodal and multiscale data to fulfill her goal. She will also create a framework to evaluate bias and fairness of the algorithms as well as their clinical feasibility and utility. Her research interests include clinical AI, precision oncology, health equity, and bias mitigation.
