Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur research team is working to develop new treatments for children at risk of neurodegenerative diseases. We are primarily focused on multiple sclerosis and X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, two conditions that involve inflammatory and metabolic disruption of the myelin that insulates brain cells. A key area of interest for us is how nutrient deficiencies during childhood may contribute to the disease processes and whether nutritional interventions could play a role in prevention.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy long-term interest lies in understanding the impact chromatin modifiers have on disease development and progression so that more optimal therapeutic opportunities can be achieved. My laboratory explores the direct molecular impact of chromatin-modifying enzymes during cell cycle progression, and characterizes the unappreciated and unconventional roles that these chromatin factors have on cytoplasmic function such as protein synthesis.

Peter Johannes van Roessel
Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Peter van Roessel, MD PhD, completed his MD at Stanford University and his residency training in psychiatry at Columbia University and the New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, with additional training in psychodynamic psychotherapy (TFP) via the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Prior to joining the clinical faculty at Stanford, he worked for several years as Associate Director of the general research unit of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, a premier state-funded research hospital affiliated with Columbia University.
At Stanford, Dr. van Roessel sees adult mood and anxiety disorders outpatients through the Assessment Clinics and participates in resident training and patient care as director of the resident Continuity Clinic and as a supervisor in psychodynamic psychotherapy. He additionally directs the third-year resident curriculum in psychopathology and psychopharmacology. As a member of the department's Rodriguez Translational Therapeutics Lab, he sees individuals with obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders for evaluations and research-protocol driven clinical treatment and contributes to and leads clinical neuroscience studies pioneering rapid-acting interventions in OCD. Clinically motivated research interests include the nature and neural correlates of metacognitive ‘awareness’ (insight) in OCD and related disorders, and particularly the relationship of awareness to mechanisms of attentional control.
Dr. van Roessel pursued research training in basic neuroscience prior to his clinical training, completing an MPhil in Biology via the Open University, UK, for research performed at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen Germany, and a PhD in molecular and developmental neurobiology at the University of Cambridge, UK. He has contributed to work in the lab of Dr Julia Kaltschmidt (Stanford) on studies of GABAergic/Glutamatergic interneuronal circuity in mouse. He received a 2018 NARSAD Young Investigator Award to pursue study of nitrous oxide as a rapid-acting treatment for OCD, he was a 2020-2022 Miller Foundation Fellow, and from 2020 to 2022 was a Advanced Fellow in Mental Illness Treatment and Research via the Sierra Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center of the Palo Alto VA. Dr. van Roessel is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American College of Psychiatrists. -

Patients who have greater insight into their genetic risk for different diseases may change their lifestyles and decrease their probablity of succumbing to conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular events. Personalized screening regimens for those at increased genetic risk, such as for colon cancer, is another important application worthy of validation.

Anubodh Sunny Varshney

BioDr. Anubodh Sunny Varshney is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the fellowship program in the section of Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant Cardiology, and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Stanford. In addition to caring for patients with advanced heart disease, he is also an Investigator in the Cardiovascular Outcomes, Policy, & Implementation Research Group (https://www.copirgroup.com/) where he works to identify patient groups that have ongoing unmet medical needs, define benchmark outcomes that next generation therapies should improve upon, and understand factors that influence adoption of novel drug and device therapies.
Dr. Varshney earned a BS in biomedical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and an MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He completed residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant Cardiology, and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Stanford University.
Dr. Varshney also has experience advising multiple medical device, drug, and digital health start-ups and currently serves as a Venture Advisor at Broadview Ventures, a philanthropically-funded, mission-driven investment organization that invests in early-stage companies developing technologies that have the potential to improve outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease or stroke. -

Mytilee Vemuri
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, with clinical and research interests in hormonal influences on women’s mental and cognitive health. After Psychiatry residency I completed a NIMH research fellowship studying gender differences in metabolic complications such as dyslipidemia, obesity, and insulin-resistance in patients with bipolar disorder. As a research fellow, I also provided clinical oversight for research participants in studies evaluating hormonal change, metabolic biomarkers and mood. More recently, I have collaborated with PI Duncan and her research group on projects studying relationships between sex hormones and mood/anxiety disorders, particularly in peri-menopausal women. From these experiences I have gained experience in conducting clinical research and collaborating in interdisciplinary research teams. I have also had over 20 years of clinical experience as an attending psychiatrist in Stanford Women’s Wellness psychiatry, general psychiatry and primary care clinics treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions including perimenopausal and geriatric mood disorders. I have published review articles detailing the evidence-basis for treating mood disorders in women during times of hormonal change, and the role of hormones as potential treatments. I also serve as the Stanford Psychiatry Department’s clinical quality improvement leader, where I oversee multiple interdisciplinary improvement teams charged with improving the quality and efficiency of care processes. I currently specialize in managing perimenopausal mood disorders and have an interest in the judicious use of menopausal hormone therapy as an adjunctive treatment for mood symptoms in this population. My clinical and research experience in the intersection of women’s mental health, sex-steroid hormones, and the perimenopause, along with broad experience working on cross-disciplinary teams, will bring valuable input to this research team.

Ross Daniel Venook
Senior Lecturer of Bioengineering
BioRoss is a Senior Lecturer in the Bioengineering department and he is the Associate Director for Engineering at the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign.
Ross primarily co-leads undergraduate laboratory courses at Stanford—an instrumentation lab (BIOE123) and an open-ended capstone design lab sequence (BIOE141A/B)—and he supports other courses and runs hands-on workshops in the areas of prototyping and systems engineering related to medical device innovation. He enjoys the unique challenges and constraints offered by biomedical engineering projects, and he delights in the opportunity for collaborative learning in a problem-solving environment.
An Electrical Engineer by training (Stanford BS, MS, PhD), Ross’ graduate work focused on building and applying new types of MRI hardware for interventional and device-related uses. Following a Biodesign Innovation fellowship, Ross helped to start the MRI safety program at Boston Scientific Neuromodulation, where he worked for 15 years to enable safe MRI access for patients with implanted medical devices--including collaboration across the MRI safety community to create and improve international standards. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy interest is in clinical skills and the bedside exam, both in its technical aspects, but also in the importance of the ritual and what is conveyed by the physician's presence and technique at the bedside. This work interests me from an educational point of view, and also from the point of view of ethnographic studies related to rituals and how they transform the patient-physician relationship. Recently we have become interested in medical error as a result of oversights in the bedside exam.

Alexander Michael Vezeridis, MD, PhD

BioAlexander Vezeridis MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, and a physician-scientist specializing in Interventional Radiology. His clinical expertise includes interventional oncology, biliary disease and endoscopy, venous disease, portal hypertension, urologic interventions, women’s and men’s health interventions, and general vascular/interventional radiology.
Dr. Vezeridis is an active researcher with expertise in translational techniques in engineering to make image-guided interventions safer and more effective for patients.
Dr. Vezeridis obtained his undergraduate, MD, and PhD degrees from Boston University. He completed a two year post-doctoral training at UC San Diego in ultrasound molecular imaging under the auspices of the Cancer Researchers in Nanotechnology (CRIN) R25T, followed by residency and fellowship at UC San Diego.
Dr. Vezeridis is highly committed to training the next generation, including students, residents, fellows, and engineering graduate students through co-directing Bio301B.
Dr. Vezeridis has a strong interest in medical device development and commercialization, and completed the Stanford Biodesign Faculty Fellowship. -
Stephen R. Viess, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Viess is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty board certification in sports medicine.He delivers care at Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare in Pleasanton. Dr. Viess focuses on arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine, with a special interest in arthroscopic reconstruction of the shoulder and knee.
Topics include the biomechanics of pitching, and shoulder and elbow injuries in the throwing athlete. Dr. Viess is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of the California Orthopaedic Association.
He strives to offer his patients the most advanced, least invasive surgical procedures, including ACL reconstruction, meniscal surgery, and arthroscopic rotator cuff and labral repairs. Dr. Viess has extensive experience in the management and treatment of sports- related orthopedic injuries. He served as Assistant Team Physician
for Major League Baseball’s Oakland As, providing game coverage and conducting pre- and post-season physical exams. For six years, Dr. Viess directed the Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare Sports Medicine Program. He also served as the team physician for Granada High School in Livermore, California.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Viess has conducted research, including a 10-year review of clinical satisfaction, revision rates, and radiographic evidence of stem fixation associated with the Ultimate-C femoral stem. He also led a study evaluating capsular sling repair during total hip arthroplasty.
Dr. Viess has made numerous presentations to peers and to the community. Peer-targeted topics include graft selection in ACL reconstruction, concussion
management, and on-field management of spine injuries. At the Lake Tahoe Sports Medicine Conference, he has presented lectures on PCL ruptures, multi-ligament knee injuries, and AC joint sprains. He also has delivered lectures for family practitioners on the evaluation and physical examination
of orthopaedic patients. For the community, Dr. Viess has made presentations at health fairs and schools. Topics include the biomechanics of pitching, and shoulder and elbow injuries in the throwing athlete.

José Vilches-Moure, DVM, PhD

BioDr. José G. Vilches-Moure, DVM, PhD, Associate Professor, received his DVM degree from Purdue University in Indiana in 2007. He completed his residency training in Anatomic Pathology (with emphasis in pathology of laboratory animal species) and his PhD in Comparative Pathology at the University of California-Davis. He joined Stanford in 2015, is the founder and current Faculty Director for Comparative and Experimental Pathology Post-doctoral Fellowship, the current Faculty Director of the Master of Laboratory Animal Science (MLAS) Graduate Program, and is the past Director of the Animal Histology Services (AHS; 2015-2022). Dr. Vilches-Moure is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, and his collaborative research interests include refinement of animal models, cancer biology and early cancer detection techniques, cardiac development and pathology, developmental pathology, and host-pathogen interactions. His teaching interests include comparative anatomy/histology, general pathology, comparative pathology, and pathology of laboratory animal species.

Lucas Kas Vitzthum, MD
Clinical Associate Professor, Radiation Oncology - Radiation Therapy
BioDr. Vitzthum is a radiation oncologist and clinical associate professor of radiation oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal and thoracic cancers. He also has a clinical and research interest in oligometastatic cancer, which is cancer that has metastasized to a limited number of sites beyond its origin.
He began his career in biomedical engineering and is passionate about integrating new technologies to advance patient care.
Dr. Vitzthum delivers treatment personalized to each patient’s condition, overall health, and goals. He believes clear communication between doctor and patient is vital to help patients make informed care decisions.
His research interests include clinical trial development, survivorship, and predictive modeling to personalize patient treatment. He is especially interested in pursuing research that can address unmet clinical needs.
Dr. Vitzthum has received research support through the Radiological Society of North America, the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Conquer Cancer Foundation, and the UCSD Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute. His work has appeared in International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, Annals of Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, and other publications.
He is a member of the American College of Radiation Oncology, American Society for Radiation Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and Radiologic Society of North America.
Dr. Vitzthum is also interested in improving access to high-quality cancer care for under-served populations domestically and abroad. -
Amy Voedisch MD, MSCP
Clinical Associate Professor, Obstetrics & Gynecology - General
BioDr. Voedisch was born and raised in a small town in Minnesota. She received a BA from Macalester College and attended Mayo Medical School. She completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Kaiser Permanent Santa Clara and a Fellowship in Complex Family Planning at Stanford School of Medicine. She also has a Masters in Epidemiology and Clinical Science Research from Stanford University. Dr. Voedisch is a board certified Complex Family Planning physician and a certified menopause practitioner through The Menopause Society. Dr. Voedisch is passionate about providing comprehensive reproductive healthcare to all women at any stage in their lives. She specializes in contraception, abortion, perimenopause and menopause. Dr. Voedisch has a particular interest in international healthcare and serves as a consultant through the Stanford Program for International Reproductive Education and Services (SPIRES), providing medical education and quality assurance in family planning internationally. Dr. Voedisch believes strongly in shared-decision making between patients and their physicians in order to help all patients reach their health goals.

Melissa Ann Vogelsong
Clinical Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Vogelsong is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University where she is involved in clinical work, education, and research. She completed her residency and dual fellowship training in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at Stanford and now attends in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), Medical ICU, and cardiac ORs. This clinical work continuously reveals the ability of modern medicine to overcome seemingly insurmountable injury and illness, yet she believes that optimal care helps a patient to return to the highest level of functioning possible. Thus her research centers around finding ways to optimize the care of critically ill patients, particularly those supported on mechanical circulatory support and those who have suffered cardiac arrest. She has received funding from the Zoll Foundation and is actively engaged with the American Heart Association and Extracorporeal Life Support Organization.
Additionally, Dr. Vogelsong serves as Associate Medical Director for Life Flight, Stanford's air medical transport service and the only hospital-based flight program in California. She is actively engaged in efforts to enhance the provision of critical care within Stanford Hospital, and serves on multiple committees including the Medical Emergency Response Committee (MERC), ECMO Task Force, and CVICU Continuous Quality Improvement group.
When not at work, Dr. Vogelsong is a huge fan of life in California and can often be found hiking, on a mountain bike, in her Sprinter van, or talking to her many goats, llamas, and horses. -
Douglas Vollrath

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe Vollrath lab works to uncover molecular mechanisms relevant to the health and pathology of the outer retina. We study metabolic and other cellular interactions between the glial-like retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and adjacent photoreceptors, with the goals of understanding the pathogenesis of photoreceptor degenerative diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, and developing therapies.

Kathan Vollrath, MD, MPH
