Nur Arafeh Dalmau

BioI am currently a postdoc at UCLA and Stanford and an Honorary Fellow at The University of Queensland. I am a marine community ecologist and marine spatial planner. My research focuses on understanding the impacts of marine heatwaves on kelp forest ecosystems. I also research the role of marine protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures for providing climate resilience and designing networks of climate-smart marine protected areas. I support conservation initiatives with NGOs, parks, and fishers, and teach decision tools such as Marxan. My heart remains in my beautiful Costa Brava, Spain (Catalonia), where I do my best to support conservation. I am a naive dreamer, and I know future generations will dive into healthy kelp forests and thriving marine ecosystems.

Alexandria Boehm

BioI am interested in pathogens in the environment including their sources, fate, and transport in natural and engineered systems. I am interested in understanding of how pathogens are transmitted to humans through contact with water, feces, and contaminated surfaces. My research is focused on key problems in both developed and developing countries with the overarching goal of designing and testing novel interventions and technologies for reducing the burden of disease.
I am also interested broadly in coastal water quality where my work addresses the sources, transformation, transport, and ecology of biocolloids - specifically fecal indicator organisms, DNA, pathogens, and phytoplankton - as well as sources and fate of nitrogen. This knowledge is crucial to formulating new management policies and engineering practices that protect human and ecosystem health at the coastal margins. -
Stephanie Caddell

BioStephanie Caddell graduated with a bachelor's degree in environmental science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with minors in marine science and environmental justice. While at UNC she researched marine microbiology, fisheries dynamics, and marine ecosystem dynamics in Ecuador and the Galapagos. Additionally, she has researched bycatch mitigation efforts in the North Atlantic for sea turtle species with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. Now working on her PhD at Stanford University with Dr. Larry Crowder, Stephanie is interested in understanding how we can better manage interactions between fishing activity and migratory species (primary sharks and turtles) off the coast of South America. She aims to understand how to bring together local community knowledge with that of the natural sciences to inform more productive policy and management strategies.

Kristen Davis

BioI am an engineer and oceanographer who is interested in studying how physical processes shape coastal waters – combining principles of fluid mechanics, oceanography, and ecology. I use both field observations and numerical tools to examine circulation in the ocean, its natural variability, and influence on marine ecosystems and human-nature interactions. I joined Stanford department of Oceans in 2024. Before that, I was an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a theoretical ecologist mostly interested in investigating factors and processes driving the dynamics of natural and harvested populations and on how to use this knowledge to inform practical management. I have worked broadly on life histories analysis, fishery management, dynamics and control of infectious diseases and environmental impact assessment.

Devin Dollery

BioI am interested in computational simulations of the natural world - focusing on developing models of ocean physics to predict the ocean's role in climate variability. At Stanford, my PhD research commencing in Autumn 2023 with Prof Fringer seeks to model and understand the interaction of surface and internal waves. This relationship will be correlated to satellite imagery of ocean surface roughness to infer stratification for assimilation into ocean models.
My professional background started in civil engineering and coastal processes modeling. I received an MSc in computational mechanics at the University of Cape Town (2018) - formulating and implementing a multiscale FEM model for cardiac tissue. Most recently, I was a scientific software developer adding parallelized tools and functionality to the ocean modeling software, UCLA ROMS, at the University of California, Los Angeles. -

Michelle María Early Capistrán
Postdoctoral Scholar, Oceans
BioMichelle María Early Capistrán is a David H. Smith Conservation Fellow at the Crowder Lab. Her transdisciplinary research focuses on working collaboratively with coastal communities to improve conservation practice by integrating Local Ecological Knowledge and marine ecology. She was originally trained as a Cultural Anthropologist and holds an M.S. and PhD in Marine Science and Limnology (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM). For over a decade, she has collaborated with rural fishing communities in the Baja California peninsula to understand long-term changes in the abundance of endangered and culturally important green turtles (Chelonia mydas). She will work with Prof. Crowder, in collaboration with Jeff Seminoff of the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center, to develop species distribution model for green turtles under climate change by integrating Local Ecological Knowledge and Citizen/Community Science.

Veronica Frans
Postdoctoral Scholar, Oceans
BioVeronica is a quantitative ecologist and science communicator focused on understanding biodiversity-human relationships within the contexts of conservation, sustainability, and ecological theory. She advances methods in ecological and synthesis research by creating innovative, open-source databases, modeling tools, and frameworks that have been widely adopted for conservation and industrial applications. Her award-winning research has been published in leading journals such as Methods in Ecology & Evolution and Nature Ecology & Evolution, and has consistently gained global media attention, being featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, and Smithsonian Magazine.
Veronica earned a dual Ph.D. in Fisheries & Wildlife and Ecology, Evolution, & Behavior from Michigan State University in 2024. She also holds a dual M.Sc. in International Nature Conservation from Göttingen University (Germany) and Lincoln University (New Zealand). She has studied and worked in many places around the world—from as far north as Alaska’s Bering Sea, to as far south as the Falkland Islands. Speaking six languages, her international experiences and relationships with diverse communities inform her research on coupled human-natural systems at local to global scales.
Veronica is a Stanford Science Fellow and National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Biology at Hopkins Marine Station (Doerr School of Sustainability). Her faculty host is Fiorenza Micheli, the David and Lucile Packard Professor of Marine Science, Chair of the Oceans Department, and Co-Director of the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions. For her postdoctoral research, Veronica is developing a novel framework for predicting human-wildlife relationships under global change. -

Prerana Gawde

BioPrerana is a marine ecologist with over five years of experience working closely with fisher communities and recreational SCUBA divers in Lakshadweep, India, conducting ecological assessments of fishery-important small pelagic baitfish and collaborating with fishers to document traditional ecological knowledge for community-led fisheries management. Currently pursuing a PhD at Stanford University’s Department of Oceans, she is exploring the ecological interactions of shipwrecks and their role in socio-ecological systems through interdisciplinary research frameworks.

William Gilly

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy work has contributed to understanding electrical excitability in nerve & muscle in organisms ranging from brittle-stars to mammals. Current research addresses behavior, physiology and ecology of squid through field and lab approaches. Electronic tagging plus in situ video, acoustic and oceanographic methods are used to study behaviors and life history in the field. Lab work focuses on control of chromogenic behavior by the chromatophore network and of locomotion by the giant axon system.

Sydney Aleah Hampton

BioSydney is a PhD student in the Oceans department, interested in using an interdisciplinary approach to explore the biophysical interactions of marine migratory species with their environment, and their responses to ecological and anthropogenic stressors. She is particularly interested in using what we know about various environmental variables and large-scale climate events to further predict and understand changes to the migratory patterns of marine species. Sydney holds a BS in Marine Science and BS in Experimental Psychology from the University of South Carolina.

BioI received my master's of science in the Spring of 2003 from the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and my PhD from Duke University in 2008. Currently, I am working at NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center in Monterey, CA. My research interests span oceanography, fisheries ecology to climate change modeling, specifically examining species-habitat relationships in the ocean, predator-prey dynamics, and climate projections on marine top predator biodiversity. My publications have addressed a range of topics from fine-scale foraging ecology of top predators, dynamic ocean management of protected species, to modeling the effects of climate change on top predator habitat and biodiversity.

BioI am a geneticist who works in the field of marine science and conservation. My work is aimed at reducing knowledge gaps in conservation science through scientific research, community partnerships and knowledge exchange across disciplines. Genomics research by our group aims to inform conservation policy and assist in reducing illegal wildlife trade.
