David Millman
Masters Student in Environment and Resources, admitted Spring 2025
Juris Doctor Student, LawBioDavid Millman is a Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford Law School. He aspires to use law, advocacy, and public policy to help communities and the people in them, particularly by addressing inequalities, climate change, and our nation’s housing crisis. David has a wide range of legal, academic, political, and nonprofit experience ranging from being a zoning district author, a state sexual violence prevention nonprofit director, a student body president, and a candidate for local office. He aims to be a housing, community development, and civil rights attorney. His work has been featured in USA Today, AP News, Yahoo News, The Week, and many regional and local publications for advocacy around housing affordability, sexual violence prevention, local government, climate change, and food insecurity.
When he was 19 years old, David for local office in Hanover, NH to solve community issues around COVID-19 and the region's housing crisis. This effort turned into a multi-year campaign around reforming zoning laws and restoring civic participation. The exposure to local government, in combination with a long-standing fight against sexual violence, has led to a law degree at Stanford University.
He has presented work in front of town councils, state legislatures, and even the UK Parliament. While at Dartmouth College, he was the first-ever male recipient of Hannah T. Croasdale Award, which is “awarded each year to the member of the Senior Class who has made the most significant contribution to the quality of life for women at Dartmouth,” due to his longstanding commitment and work against sexual violence on campus. As Student Body President, he helped lead the campaign for the implementation of free teletherapy services on campus, establish a now-institutionalized campus food pantry, and design new campus bus routes for students to get home safely — all initiatives which continue to this day. Alongside his law degree, David is also completing an MS in Environment and Resources at the Doerr School of Sustainability. Most recently, he completed a Master’s degree at the London School of Economics (LSE) in Local Economic Development, writing a dissertation on effective strategies around empowering the homelessness in Central London. -
Karli Moore
Ph.D. Student in Environment and Resources, admitted Autumn 2021
BioKarli Moore, a member of the Lumbee Tribe, is from Prospect, North Carolina, and is pursuing a PhD in environment and resources at Stanford School of Earth, Energy, and Environmental Sciences. She earned bachelor's degrees in chemistry and agricultural business management from NC State University, master's degrees in agricultural economics (University of Arkansas) and rural development (Ghent University), and a graduate certificate in food policy from Arizona State University. Karli aspires to advance food sovereignty and economic development for indigenous communities through climate-smart agriculture that centers traditional ecological knowledge. She was a biodiversity coordinator at BASF, an economic fellow at the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative, and a program officer at the Native American Agriculture Fund. Her work has helped guide the investment of more than $40 million for Native food systems over the past two years. She is a Udall Scholar, Park Scholar, and Mathews Medal recipient.

Souradeep Mukherjee

BioSouradeep is an Exploration Geologist-turned-AI Researcher developing decision-making algorithms to discover high-grade mineral deposits. With almost a decade of experience in on-field exploration of critical & strategic mineral deposits, he is now using his computer to unlock the full potential of mineral discovery.
Souradeep is currently a Doctoral Researcher at Stanford Mineral-X. His current work focuses on fusing multi-element soil geochemistry with 3D geological inference to build predictive models for subsurface intrusion-hosted Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization in the Curaçá Valley, Brazil. By leveraging machine learning, geostatistics, and compositional data analysis, he aims to reduce geological uncertainty and operational costs in mineral targeting, transforming how exploration is conducted in under-explored terrains.
Prior to Stanford, Souradeep held several technical and supervisory roles at the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), Government of India, where he spearheaded multiple national-scale mineral exploration campaigns. He led the exploration and evaluation of uranium-bearing sediments in the Bhima Basin, the mapping of lithium-rich pegmatites in Karnataka, and the delineation of heavy mineral sand deposits across the east coast of India. His work included advanced geological mapping, structural interpretation, kinematic analysis, downhole geophysics, petrological microscopy, and geostatistical modeling—skills that now enrich his algorithmic thinking in research.
His research interests span compositional data analysis, geospatial modeling, machine learning for Earth systems, building intelligent decision making agents for mineral exploration and mineral prospectivity analysis. He is particularly passionate about bridging the gap between traditional geosciences and computational intelligence to power the next generation of resource discovery tools.
When he’s not deep into code or core samples, Souradeep contributes to scientific outreach, mentors young geoscientists, and advocates for data transparency and sustainability in the mining sector. He is also a writer, a poet and loves to write pieces on existential philosophy. -
Leona Neftaliem
Ph.D. Student in Environment and Resources, admitted Autumn 2022
BioLeona is pursuing a PhD in the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER) at Stanford University. Her current research focuses on improving tree detection methods, understanding human migration patterns in response to environmental and socioeconomic pressures, and assessing drivers of urban air quality. She approaches these topics by integrating remote sensing, quantitative surveys, and innovative environmental engineering techniques at different scales and in different cities.
Before Stanford, Leona worked as a research technician at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, where she designed technologically innovative climate change experiments. She is a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow, and a Stanford School of Sustainability Dean’s Graduate Scholar. -
Fridah Nyakundi
Ph.D. Student in Environment and Resources, admitted Autumn 2021
BioFridah Nyakundi is an E-IPER PhD student whose broad research interests include productive water use, intensification of smallholder farms, land-use change and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa. Fridah graduated with a bachelor in economics and statistics (2014) and a masters of arts in economics (2016), both from the University of Nairobi. Her thesis focused on sustainably optimizing extractive forests in Kenya by calculating the optimal rotation period of three tree species that are the most harvested in Kenya.
Before her PhD program, Fridah worked as a Senior Research Associate with the International Center For Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) within the Africa region. -

She examines the cultural, socio-economic, and historical drivers that impact SSF governance, and how these governance models in turn affect resilience of and access to blue food systems.

Nidhi Utkarshbhai Patel

BioPlants display enormous diversity of forms today that, have evolved over geological timescales after plants successfully colonized land. Currently, I am interested in learning more about evolutionary changes in plant structures including specialized reproductive organs of seed plants. I study plant fossil record from deep time and living plants with the aim to develop a better understanding of origins of plant reproductive structures and drivers of morphological evolution in plants. Previously, I have looked at spore-pollen record preserved in sedimentary rocks from Canada. These microscopic fossils and their distribution in space and time can help us elucidate the response of vegetation to past extinction events.

Eliane Petersohn

BioI grew up in Curitiba, a city in southern Brazil, and, moved to Rio de Janeiro to join the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) years ago.
I have a strong grasp of the oil and gas industry, where I have been working for more than 15 years. I have a bachelor’s and master's degree in geology from the Federal University of Parana, Brazil and, I have become a public servant of the ANP, where I have held different technical and managerial positions. I spent these past 15 years working on the ANP’s large-scale strategic projects, conducting a geological evaluation for Brazil’s bidding rounds, and developing a multiyear geological and geophysical data acquisition plan for the Agency. I was also responsible for coordinating the first phase of the onerous assignment process, which authorized the Brazilian Government to onerously assign to NOC Petrobras up to 5 billion barrels of oil. I have also been directly involved in the location of two wells, which discovered two of the country's largest oil fields (Buzios and Mero fields). As a geologist researcher, my main objective aims at acquiring capabilities and developing the knowledge required to manage reservoirs to maximize oil recovery and extend the lifespan of oil fields as well as acquire a solid understanding of oil reservoir management to bring innovative knowledge to Brazil and help create guidelines to monitor oil field development and production in my country. -
Maggie Poulos

HIA Mentor, Stanford Arts InstituteBioMaggie is a PhD student in Stanford University's E-IPER Program interested in intersectional equity and blue justice through the lens of marine resource management in Kenya and Tanzania. In exploring resource access and collective action through local governance mechanisms, she studies the motivations behind and challenges to diverse participation in local marine governance, as well as opportunities for encouraging gendered inclusion. Through a co-production of knowledge framework and related field research tools, Maggie aims to co-create applied research that makes marine policy a more diverse and equitable space for local and Indigenous communities. Before her time at Stanford, Maggie earned a Master of Public Policy from Duke University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Studies from Macalester College.
