My new book – A Perfect Mess: The Unlikely Ascendancy of American Higher Education – is an essay about the nature of the American system of higher education. American higher education is an anomaly. In the second half of the 20th century it surged past its European forebears to become the dominant system in the world – with more money, influence, Nobel prizes, and drawing power than any of the systems that served as its models. By all rights, this never should have happened. Its origins were remarkably humble, arising from a loose assortment of parochial 19th century liberal arts colleges, which emerged in the pursuit of sectarian expansion and civic boosterism more than scholarly distinction. It was not even a system in the usual sense of the word, since it emerged with no plan, no planner, no prospects, and no reliable source of support. Yet these weaknesses of the American system in the 19th century turned out to be strengths in the 20th. From the difficult circumstances of trying to survive in an environment with a weak state, a divided church, and intense competition with peer institutions, American colleges developed into a system of higher education that was lean, adaptable, consumer-sensitive, self-supporting, and radically decentralized. This put the system in a strong position to expand and prosper when, before the turn of the century, it finally got what it was most grievously lacking: academic credibility (which came when it adopted elements of the German research university) and large student enrollments (which came when middle class families started to see social advantage in sending their children to college).
This system is extraordinarily complex, bringing together contradictory educational goals, a broad array political constituencies, diverse sources of funds, and multiple forms of authority into a single institutional arena characterized by creative tension and local autonomy. One tension is between the influence of the market and the influence of the state. Another arises from the conflict among three social-political visions of higher education – as undergraduate college (populist), graduate school (elite), and land grant college (practical). A third arises from the way the system combines three alternative modes of authority – traditional, rational, and charismatic. In combination, these elements promote organizational complexity, radical stratification, broad political and financial support, partial autonomy, and adaptive entrepreneurial behavior. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsArthropod-borne viruses are emerging and re-emerging infections that are spreading throughout the world. Our laboratory investigates the epidemiology of arboviral infections, focusing on the burden of disease and the long-term complications on human health. In particular, Dr. LaBeaud investigates dengue, chikungunya, and Rift Valley fever viruses in Kenya, where outbreaks cause fever, arthritis, retinitis, encephalitis, and hemorrhagic fever. Our main research questions focus on the risk factors for arboviral infections, the development of diagnostic tests that can be administered in the field to quickly determine what kind of arboviral infection a person has, and the genetic and immunologic investigation of why different people respond differently to the same infection. Our long-term goals are to contribute to a deeper understanding of arboviral infections and their long-term health consequences and to optimize control strategies to prevent these emerging infections. Our laboratory also investigates the effects of antenatal and postnatal parasitic infections on vaccine responses, growth, and development of Kenyan children.
My lab at Stanford supports the field work that is ongoing in Kenya, but we also have several projects that are based locally. We strive to improve diagnostics of arboviral infections and are using Luminex technology to build a new screening assay. We also have created a Luminex based platform to assess vaccine responses against multiple pathogens. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are continuing to grow a glomerulonephritis cohort study, including immunologic characterization. We have completed interventional studies of preeclampsia exploring the nitric oxide, endothelin system and effects on glomerular function and morphometry. We continue to recruit patients for treatment and observational studies of glomerular disease, including FSGS, membranous and particularly IgA nephropathy. We also are actively studying renal disease in systemic amyloidosis.

Clinical Professor (By courtesy), Medicine - OncologyBioDr. Lahijani is a Clinical Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and a nationally recognized leader in psycho-oncology. With extensive training and expertise in internal medicine, psychiatry, and consultation-liaison psychiatry, she has made significant contributions to the integration of psychiatric care within oncological settings.
Since her appointment at Stanford in 2015, Dr. Lahijani has served as the lead psychiatric oncologist at the Stanford Cancer Center, where she provides medical psychiatric consultation services and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes. In her capacity as Medical Director of the Stanford Cancer Center Psychosocial Oncology Program, a position she has held since 2019, she is responsible for the strategic development and implementation of comprehensive psychiatric services tailored to the unique needs of patients with cancer.
Additionally, Dr. Lahijani serves as the Section Chief of Psycho-Oncology in the Division of Medical Psychiatry where she oversees psych-onc faculty development and leads the training of medical psychiatry fellows in psycho-oncology. She also supervises advanced practice providers while also working as an attending psychiatric oncologist to provide care for patients with complex medical and psychiatric comorbidities across all hematology and oncology units.
Dr. Lahijani's academic credentials include her graduation from Brown Medical School, followed by the completion of a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center. After completing residency, she practiced internal medicine and psychiatry with a focus on triple diagnosis (HIV, addiction medicine, mental health). She then further advanced through a Psychosomatic Medicine Fellowship at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, during which time she received specialized training in psychiatric oncology at the Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Her clinical expertise encompasses psychopharmacology and a range of treatment modalities, including Meaning Centered Psychotherapy and Dignity Therapy. Dr. Lahijani is deeply committed to fostering relationship-centered skills and promoting provider wellness. As a faculty member of Advancing Communication Excellence at Stanford, she has led workshops designed to enhance communication competencies among faculty and staff.
Dr. Lahijani's scholarly pursuits are at the intersection of medicine and psychiatry, with a particular emphasis on the neuropsychiatric sequelae of cancer treatment, innovations in care, and medical education. She is dedicated to the education and mentorship of trainees in Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, and Neurology. Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur brains store long term memories by adjusting the strengths of the synapses connecting neurons. The tendency for new memories to overwrite old ones leads to a trade-off between learning and remembering: if synapses are too plastic older memories will be wiped out easily, if they are too rigid it becomes difficult to learn new memories. I am studying theoretical models of synapses to understand how their internal structure can be used to balance these effects and maximize their memory storage.

Ching-Yao Lai

BioMy group attacks fundamental questions in fluid dynamics and geophysics by integrating mathematical and machine-learned models with observational data. We use our findings to address challenges facing the world, such as advancing our scientific knowledge of ice dynamics under climate change. The length scale of the systems we are interested in varies broadly from a few microns to thousands of kilometers, because the governing physical principles are often universal across a range of length and time scales. We use mathematical models, simulations, and machine learning to study the complex interactions between fluids and elasticity and their interfacial dynamics, such as multiphase flows, flows in deformable structures, and cracks. We extend our findings to tackle emerging topics in climate science and geophysics, such as understand the missing physics that governs the flow of ice sheets in a warming climate. We welcome collaborations across disciplinary lines, from geophysics, engineering, physics, applied math to computer science, since we believe combining expertise and methodologies across fields is crucial for new discoveries.

Elaine Lai

BioElaine Lai is a Lecturer for Civic, Liberal, and Global Education (COLLEGE) who has spent over a decade of her life working and studying in Nepal, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan, and China, where she made many lifelong friends.
Elaine is a scholar of Buddhism, trained in the languages of Tibetan, Chinese, and Sanskrit. She specializes in a tradition known as the Great Perfection in Tibet. Elaine’s recent research explores the relationship between Buddhist literature and time, specifically, how form and content interplay to cultivate more compassionate temporal relationalities. Elaine is committed to making the study of Buddhism accessible to a wider audience through technology and the arts. As a part of her dissertation, she created an intertextual heatmap to trace the citational history of a scripture throughout an important corpus of Great Perfection literature. Elaine also created a virtual reality (VR) experience to present Great Perfection history in a novel way.
At Stanford, Elaine has co-taught different courses in Religious Studies and guest lectured in Asian American Studies. In 2022, Elaine is proud to have created and taught the course “Queering Buddhism: Gender, Sexuality, and Liberatory Praxis.” This course sought to investigate the possibilities and constraints to “queering” or transforming any institution, and how the fields of queer studies and feminist studies might constructively and ethically be in conversation with Buddhist theories of liberation. In her pedagogy, Elaine emphasizes the importance of reciprocity, respect, and co-creation. Elaine is a firm believer that the process of how we engage in dialogue is as important, if not more important, than what the ultimate outcome of our conversations might be.
In Elaine’s free time, she writes screenplays (film and TV), spanning the genres of comedy, sci-fi, animation, historical drama, and more. -
Jiewen Lai

BioJiewen (Sam) Lai is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Center for Design Research at Stanford University, where he works with the Biomimetics and Dexterous Manipulation Lab. He is also a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2022 and completed his postdoctoral training at CUHK in 2023.
Sam works on soft and bioinspired robotic systems, focusing on compliant mechanisms, modeling, mechatronics, sensorimotor control, and robophysical intelligence for biomedical applications. His work has been published in various venues, including Nat. Rev. Electr. Eng., IJRR, T-MECH, RA-L, and ICRA, among others. He has served as an Associate Editor for ICRA since 2023. -

David D. Laitin
James T. Watkins IV and Elise V. Watkins Professor
BioDavid D. Laitin is the James T. Watkins IV and Elise V. Watkins Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. He received his BA from Swarthmore College, and then served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Somalia and Grenada, where he became national tennis champion in 1970. Back in the US, he received his Ph.D. in political science from UC Berkeley, working under the direction of Ernst Haas and Hanna Pitkin.
He has taught at three great universities: UCSD (1975-87), the University of Chicago (1987-1999) and now at Stanford. Over his career, as a student of comparative politics, he has conducted field research in Somalia, Yorubaland (Nigeria), Catalonia (Spain), Estonia, and France, all the time focusing on issues of language and religion, and how these cultural phenomena link nation to state. His books include Politics, Language and Thought: The Somali Experience (1977), Hegemony and Culture: Politics and Religious Change among the Yoruba (1986), Language Repertoires and State Construction in Africa (1992), Identity in Formation: The Russian-Speaking Populations in the Near Abroad (1998); Nations, States and Violence (2007); Why Muslim Integration Fails in Christian-Heritage Societies (2016); and African Politics Since Independence (2019).
In collaboration with James Fearon, he has published several papers on ethnicity, ethnic cooperation, the sources of civil war, and on policies that work to settle civil wars. Laitin has also collaborated with Alan Krueger on international terrorism and with Eli Berman on suicide terrorism.
In 2008-2009, with support from the National Science Foundation, and with a visiting appointment at Sciences-Po Paris, Laitin conducted ethnographic, survey and experimental research on Muslim integration into France, seeking to assess the magnitude of religious discrimination and isolate the mechanisms that sustain it. In collaboration with Claire Adida and Marie-Anne Valfort, they published the results in Why Muslim Integration Fails in Christian Heritage Societies (Harvard Press, 2016).
In 2016, Laitin became co-director of Stanford's Immigration Policy Lab, and has co-authored several papers published in "Science", "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" and "Nature Human Behavior" that estimate the effects of policy on immigrant integration.
Laitin has been a recipient of fellowships from the Howard Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Russell Sage Foundation. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. In 2021 Laitin was the recipient of the John Skytte Prize in Political Science from the Johan Skytte Foundation in Uppsala University, Sweden. -

BioI grew up in the east bay area and have had type 1 diabetes for 30+ years. I studied electrical engineering and computer science at U.C. Berkeley (Go Bears!) with the hope of applying my knowledge to diabetes technology. The significance of clinical practice became clear to me after my siblings also developed diabetes. I am devoting my life to advancing the care of diabetes in people of all ages.

Sanjay Lall

BioSanjay Lall is Professor of Electrical Engineering in the Information Systems Laboratory and Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. He received a B.A. degree in Mathematics with first-class honors in 1990 and a Ph.D. degree in Engineering in 1995, both from the University of Cambridge, England. His research group focuses on algorithms for control, optimization, and machine learning. Before joining Stanford he was a Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology in the Department of Control and Dynamical Systems, and prior to that he was a NATO Research Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems. He was also a visiting scholar at Lund Institute of Technology in the Department of Automatic Control. He has significant industrial experience applying advanced algorithms to problems including satellite systems, advanced audio systems, Formula 1 racing, the America's cup, cloud services monitoring, and integrated circuit diagnostic systems, in addition to several startup companies. Professor Lall has served as Associate Editor for the journal Automatica, on the steering and program committees of several international conferences, and as a reviewer for the National Science Foundation, DARPA, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. He is the author of over 130 peer-refereed publications.

Mable Lam

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMyelin is required for rapid nerve signaling by insulating axons to accelerate action potential propagation. Myelin-forming cells of the central nervous system, called oligodendrocytes, orchestrate one of the most complex morphological transformations in neurobiology. Each oligodendrocyte can extend multiple processes that selectively wrap axons in tens to hundreds of spiraling membrane layers, forming myelin sheaths that vary in thickness and length. Furthermore, oligodendrocytes can respond to neural activity by adding new sheaths or by changing the geometry of pre-existing sheaths to tune neural circuitry, a process known as adaptive myelination.
What are the membrane trafficking mechanisms that drive adaptive myelination in oligodendrocytes?
How can these mechanisms be stimulated to promote myelin regeneration in disease?
By using transgenic mouse models and primary oligodendrocytes, we have found that SNARE-mediated exocytosis drives membrane addition in myelin sheaths. Current research is focused on how these pathways in oligodendrocytes may be regulated during adaptive myelination. -
Monica Lam

BioProfessor Lam's current research interest is to create effective and reliable AI assistants to accelerate the discovery of knowledge. Her OVAL lab has created numerous open-source LLM-based tools used by consumers, historians, and journalists in their work; currently, she is focusing on research assistants that can discover new insights for biomedicine and other technical areas.
Professor Lam's team has created the first quantifiably factual and engaging conversational agent, which has won the Best Research of the Year Award from Wikimedia Foundation; pioneered deep research agent called STORM that has been used by about a million users; developed the best-performing agent for retrieving knowledge from hybrid sources, including databases, knowledge graphs, and free-text, currently deployed at Wikimedia; created an agent framework that produces fluent task-oriented agents that do not hallucinate.
Prof. Lam is also an expert in compilers for high-performance machines. Her pioneering work of affine partitioning provides a unifying theory to the field of loop transformations for parallelism and locality. Her software pipelining algorithm is used in commercial systems for instruction level parallelism. Her research team created the first, widely adopted research compiler, SUIF. She is a co-author of the classic compiler textbook, popularly known as the “dragon book”. She was on the founding team of Tensilica, now a part of Cadence.
Dr. Lam is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering and an Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Fellow. -
Vinh Lam
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medicine - Primary Care and Population Health
BioDr. Vinh Lam is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Primary Care and Population health. He earned his MD from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and chose to stay in Los Angeles to complete his family medicine residency training at UCLA. During his training, Dr. Lam developed a strong interest in teaching and medical education through his involvement with resident education and the graduate medical education committee. He also spent 1 year as a resident informaticist where he also became very interested in informatics, medical technology, and innovative solutions to improving patient health outcomes and decreasing physician burnout. Dr. Lam enjoys caring for patients of all ages from pediatrics to geriatrics, performing office-based procedures, and prioritizing preventative care.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Lam loves to travel with his family, dabbles in photography and videography, and enjoys attempting to recreate meals he has had while traveling with his wife. -

I organized a randomized clinical trial, the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study to compare the visual outcomes of infants optically corrected with a contact lens vs. an intraocular lens after unilateral cataract surgery. A second area of research has been ocular growth after cataract surgery.

I aim at better understanding causes and impacts of changes in tropical forests, drylands, and farming systems. I currently focus on land use transitions – i.e., the shift from deforestation (or land degradation) to reforestation (or land sparing for nature), – the influence of globalization on land use decisions, and the interactions between public and private governance of land use.

BioDr. Dany Lamothe is a board-certified, fellowship-trained psychiatrist with Stanford Health Care Gastrointestinal Behavioral Medicine. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Division of Medical Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the lead psychiatrist in the Gastrointestinal Behavioral Medicine Program and the medical director of psychiatric emergency services at Stanford Health Care. In addition, Dr. Lamothe is a supervisor of the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic.
Dr. Lamothe specializes in addressing emotional, behavioral, and psychological factors that contribute to persistent gastrointestinal symptoms. He uses evidence-based therapies and medication management to help improve his patients’ quality of life.
Dr. Lamothe’s research interests include health anxiety, nutritional support outcomes in patients with gastroparesis, and integrative care models for disorders of gut-brain interaction.
Dr. Lamothe has published his research in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, the Canadian Journal of Bioethics, and General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He has also presented his research at international, national, and regional meetings, including the annual meetings of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (ACLP), the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the Association for the Advancement of Philosophy and Psychiatry (AAPP), and the European Association of Psychosomatic Medicine (EAPM).

BioDr. Landegger is a clinician-scientist (otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon) and Instructor at Stanford University School of Medicine. After gaining clinical as well as research experience in various countries (US, UK, France, Spain, Germany, Singapore, Australia), he specialized in otology with translational hearing research in Vienna, Austria and for five years in Boston (Mass Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School), leading to a PhD in Neuroscience. Apart from clinical projects, current basic research foci are funded by a grant obtained from the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy and include inner ear gene therapy, vestibular schwannoma, noise-induced hearing loss, and others.

BioJoshua Landy is the Andrew B. Hammond Professor of French, Professor of Comparative Literature, and co-director of the Literature and Philosophy Initiative at Stanford, home to a PhD minor and undergraduate major tracks in Philosophy and Literature.
Professor Landy is the author of Philosophy as Fiction: Self, Deception, and Knowledge in Proust (Oxford, 2004), How To Do Things with Fictions (Oxford, 2012), and The World According to Proust (Oxford, 2023). He is also the co-editor of two volumes, Thematics: New Approaches (SUNY, 1995, with Claude Bremond and Thomas Pavel) and The Re-Enchantment of the World: Secular Magic in a Rational Age (Stanford, 2009, with Michael Saler). Philosophy as Fiction deals with issues of self-knowledge, self-deception, and self-fashioning in Proust's "A la recherche du temps perdu," while raising the question of what literary form contributes to an engagement with such questions. How to Do Things with Fictions explores a series of texts (by Plato, Beckett, Mallarmé, and Mark) that function as training-grounds for the mental capacities. The World According to Proust (now in paperback as Marcel Proust: A Very Short Introduction) is a reader's guide to "In Search of Lost Time."
Professor Landy has published essays in Critical Inquiry, New Literary History, Poetics Today, Narrative, SubStance, Arion, The Los Angeles Review of Books, the Wall Street Journal, and other venues, as well as chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive Approaches to Literature, The Blackwell Companion to the Philosophy of Literature, and The Cambridge Companion to Proust.
Since 2017, Professor Landy has co-hosted the nationally syndicated public radio show "Philosophy Talk." He has also appeared on the NPR shows "Forum" and "To the Best of our Knowledge."

Marvin Langston

BioDr. Marvin Langston is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health. He is a member of the Stanford Cancer Institute and Urologic Cancer Epidemiology Lab. He is an epidemiologist by training who focuses on the fields of benign prostate and pelvic conditions and urological cancers including prostate and kidney cancers.
Prior to Stanford, he served as a Research Scientist in the Division of Research at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Dr. Langston received his PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Arizona’s College of Public Health followed by postdoctoral training in Cancer Prevention and Control at Washington University in Saint Louis School of Medicine.
His program of research intends to characterize and measure infectious agents, environmental toxicants, and lifestyle factors; to evaluate the role of these factors in urological cancer etiology and outcomes; and to identify populations at high risk of exposure to these factors. So far he has focused this research to address the following questions: 1) What role do sexually transmitted infections and other systemic infections have in prostate damage and ensuing prostate cancer risk? 2) How can we appropriately model and define early life risk factors for urological cancers? 3) Can we harmonize molecular and clinical aspects of urological condition diagnoses to produce well characterized outcomes for biomarker discovery and etiological investigation? He has primarily addressed these questions using a variety of molecular and clinical epidemiology approaches while developing expertise in the cross-cutting theme of cancer health disparities with particular interests in the cancer care experiences of sexual and gender minorities and racial/ethnic minorities.
Dr. Langston has been studying the impact of exogenous factors on prostate specific antigen (PSA) concentration in young men as a marker of prostate damage and inflammation for over a decade. As early life PSA has been found predictive of future prostate cancer mortality, he has now setout to optimize risk-stratified screening for prostate cancer. This promising approach uses men’s baseline PSA values to inform their risk of future aggressive and/or fatal prostate cancer and determine their frequency of further screening. Under this approach, men with high baseline age-specific total PSA levels receive more frequent screening and men with lower levels receive less frequent screening. Dr. Langston was awarded an R01 from NCI to evaluate this approach using historically collected biospecimen. His funded research trajectory to this point also includes four training awards (2-NCI and 2-NIDDK) and several internal grants. Dr. Langston was selected in the inaugural class of the White House Cancer Moonshot Scholars for his work. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research involves the design and conduct of clinical trials to discover new treatments for patients who have suffered a stroke. These trials span treatment of acute stroke, stroke recovery, and stroke prevention. My research in acute stroke is primarily focused on the use of advanced neuroimaging methods (CT and MRI) to select patients who are most likely to benefit from therapies aimed at restoring blood flow to the brain in patients who have suffered a stroke.

BioPATRICK LANTER, MD, MPH FACEP is an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Lanter previously completed a 2-year ultrasound fellowship and 2-year global emergency medicine at Stanford and has completed his master's in public health at the University of California Berkeley. He completed his emergency medicine residency at Washington University in St. Louis where he served as Chief Resident. He completed his medical school training at the University of Illinois, Chicago and was a member of the Global Medicine Program during his time there. His work has focused on the development of a sustainable ultrasound training program at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali in Rwanda. Tobias Lanz
Assistant Professor of Medicine (Immunology and Rheumatology)
BioTobias Lanz, MD is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Immunity, Transplantation, and Infection and the Division of Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford. His research focuses on B cell biology in neuroimmunological diseases and rheumatic diseases with neurological manifestations. He uses high-throughput screening technologies, and methods from structural and cell biology to identify new autoantigens and to understand how certain self-reactive B cells escape tolerance mechanisms. He is particularly interested in molecular mechanisms that explain the association between Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) and autoimmunity.
Tobias went to medical school at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen, Germany and at the University College of London. He wrote his MD thesis at Dr. Michael Platten's laboratory at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research in Tübingen, Germany before joining Dr. Lawrence Steinman’s neuroimmunological laboratory at Stanford as a research scholar. After medical school he pursued his scientific and clinical training at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany. In 2015 he joined Dr. William Robinson’s lab at Stanford, where he investigated environmental triggers of autoimmunity, including viruses and milk consumption. In his most recent work, he characterized the B cell repertoire in the spinal fluid of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and identified molecular mimicry between EBV EBNA1 and the glial cellular adhesion molecule GlialCAM as a driver of neuroinflammation (Lanz et al., Nature, 2022). His long term objective is to leverage these newly discovered mechanistic insights to develop next-generation biomarkers and therapeutics for autoimmune diseases. -

Nicholas Wiessner Larsen, MD

BioDr. Larsen is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology, Division of Autonomic Disorders. He is a board-certified neurologist and a fellowship-trained specialist in neurophysiology and autonomics. He completed medical school at the University of Utah and neurology residency and fellowship at Stanford.
In his clinical practice, Dr. Larsen focuses on disorders of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). His research interest is in the long-term autonomic complications of COVID-19. He is the principal investigator of a study looking at post-COVID postural tachycardia syndrome.
Dr. Larsen’s research interests also include Global Health Neurology. Dr. Larsen helped establish the first stroke unit in Rwanda and is part of the American Academy of Neurology’s Refugees & Asylum Seekers Working Group.
He has co-authored articles for publication in Clinical Autonomic Research, Autonomic Neuroscience, Nature Climate Change, and elsewhere. He is a recipient of the American Academy of Neurology Medical Student Prize for Excellence as well as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. -
David Larson

On Partial Leave from 01/15/2026 To 05/15/2026BioDavid B. Larson, MD, MBA, is Professor of Radiology (Pediatric Radiology) in the Department of Radiology at Stanford University. His career is focused on managing and improving complex sociotechnical healthcare systems to drive continuous operational improvement for the benefit of patients and clinicians. His research and leadership activities span the sociotechnical spectrum, from the development of process control systems that optimize CT radiation dose to transitioning the field of radiology from "peer review" toward "peer learning" to foster a more collaborative and constructive work environment.
He has founded and directed numerous improvement programs at Stanford and beyond, including Stanford’s Realizing Improvement through Team Empowerment (RITE) program, the Clinical Effectiveness Leadership Training (CELT) (program co-founder), Stanford Medicine's Improvement Capability Development Program (ICDP), and the Stanford Medicine Center for Improvement's (SMCI's) Advanced Course in Improvement Science (ACIS). He is also the founder and co-director of the American College of Radiology's (ACR's) Learning Network, its various Improvement Collaboratives, and the ImPower improvement training and project support program.
Dr. Larson served for over 10 years in various senior leadership roles in the Stanford Department of Radiology, including Associate Chair for Performance Improvement, Vice Chair for Education and Clinical Operations, Executive Vice Chair, and Acting Chair. He currently serves as the Director of the Stanford Radiology AI Development and Evaluation (AIDE) Lab. He also serves as the Medical Director of Performance Improvement at Stanford Health Care.
Dr. Larson has applied his experience to advance the thinking and application of systematic improvement methods in the field of radiology. He is the founder and program chair for the annual Radiology Improvement Summit held annually at Stanford, which began in 2016. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Board of Radiology, overseeing quality and safety, and on the Board of Chancellors for the American College of Radiology as the chair of the ACR's Commission on Quality and Safety.
Prior to his position at Stanford, Dr. Larson was the Janet L. Strife Chair for Quality and Safety in Radiology and a faculty member of the James M. Amira Latif Hernandez
Instructor, Adult Neurology
BioAmira obtained her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the KU Leuven, Belgium, in summer 2017. During her doctoral studies, she used clinically valid tests of murine cognition, neuronal plasticity measures in hippocampal and cortical slices, brain lesion methods, pharmacological applications and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging to characterize the pathophysiology of novel mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). One of her most gratifying contributions was the development of a new electrophysiology tool to assess synaptopathies, and the establishment of long-term synaptic plasticity from prefrontal cortex of APP knock-in mice. In Autumn 2017, she moved to Dr. Longo’s lab at the Stanford School of Medicine, where she investigates signaling pathways involved in synaptic degeneration. During 3 years of postdoctoral work, she established a multi-electrode array system with eight independent recording chambers that allows high-throughput analyses of multiple long-lasting forms of synaptic plasticity. She also gained experience in RNA-sequencing, molecular biochemistry, signaling mechanisms, target validation and drug development strategies for AD. In October 2020, Amira has been appointed as an Instructor in Neurodegenerative Disease Research, in the Longo lab, to help develop improved and more powerful approaches that will better reveal key synaptic mechanisms and candidate modules associated with neuroplasticity and affected in AD mouse models, by identifying activity-dependent gene expression signatures.

Robert Laughlin

BioProfessor Laughlin is a theorist with interests ranging from hard-core engineering to cosmology. He is an expert in semiconductors (Nobel Prize 1998) and has also worked on plasma and nuclear physics issues related to fusion and nuclear-pumped X-ray lasers. His technical work at the moment focuses on “correlated-electron” phenomenology – working backward from experimental properties of materials to infer the presence (or not) of new kinds of quantum self-organization. He recently proposed that all Mott insulators – including the notorious doped ones that exhibit high-temperature superconductivity – are plagued by a new kind of subsidiary order called “orbital antiferromagnetism” that is difficult to detect directly. He is also the author of A Different Universe, a lay-accessible book explaining emergent law.

Rondy Michael Lazaro, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery
BioDr. Rondy Michael Lazaro is a board-certified, fellowship-trained physiatrist with specialization in sports medicine in the Stanford Health Care Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Division. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Lazaro’s clinical expertise includes diagnosing and treating a wide range of sports medicine conditions. His clinical practice focuses on injuries and conditions of the lower extremity (hip, knee, ankle, and foot). He is an expert in using ultrasound to diagnose musculoskeletal injuries and perform ultrasound-guided procedures. Dr. Lazaro is experienced with treating injuries in runners and other endurance athletes. He is also well-versed in taking care of performing artists such as dancers and musicians.
He has extensive experience providing medical coverage for high school, collegiate, and professional athletic events and teams. He was a lead venue physician for the 2023 World University Games in Lake Placid, New York. He also served as company physician for New York State Ballet.
His research focuses on evidence-based approaches to prevent injury, relieve pain, and optimize health and performance. Organizations such as the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) have supported his work with grant funding.
Dr. Lazaro has been published in journals such as The Knee and Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine. He has presented his findings at national and international conferences, including the annual meetings of the Association of Academic Physiatrists and the AMSSM.
Dr. Lazaro is an active member of several professional societies, including the American College of Sports Medicine and the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science. He also serves on committees for the AMSSM and the Performing Arts Medicine Association. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Lazaro is originally from Hayward, California. He graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Music (concentration in Conducting) and BS in Biology. Melanie Lean
Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioMelanie Lean, Clin.Psych.D. is a Californian licensed clinical psychologist, Clinical Assistant Professor, and assistant director of research in the INSPIRE early psychosis clinic, Stanford University School of Medicine. She provides Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) within the recovery oriented and trauma informed framework of the INSPIRE clinic. Dr Lean received her doctorate from University College London, UK and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. She is a mixed methods researcher, with over 15 years’ experience in mental health research, working across a range of settings with a focus on severe and enduring mental illness and ways to improve service provision for this population. She has specialized knowledge in self-management and peer support interventions for people with psychosis and has experience working alongside service user researchers in the evaluation and delivery of study interventions. Dr Lean is also trained in psychedelic assisted therapy and works on a range of clinical trials investigating psilocybin for treatment resistant depression.

BioJim Leape serves as co-director of the Center for Ocean Solutions and is the William and Eva Price Senior Fellow in the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. Through research, writing, and direct engagement with private and public sector leaders, Jim looks at how to drive large-scale systemic shifts to sustainability, with particular interest in expanding private sector leadership on sustainability globally.
Jim has four decades of conservation experience, spanning a broad range of conservation issues on every continent. From 2005 to 2014, he served as Director General of WWF International and leader of the global WWF Network, which is one of the world’s largest conservation organizations, active in more than 100 countries. In that capacity, he worked with government, business and civil society leaders on a wide range of issues, including climate change, marine conservation, forest protection, water resources management, and sustainability in global commodity markets. Before going to WWF International, Jim directed the conservation and science initiatives of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, a leading philanthropy in the U.S. Previously, he served as executive vice president of WWF-US in Washington, D.C.; as a lawyer for the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi, Kenya; as a law professor; and as a litigator for the National Audubon Society and for the U.S. Department of Justice.
Jim has served on the boards of the Marine Stewardship Council, Mission 2020 and the Luc Hoffmann Institute, and on the Global Future Council for the Food Security and the Environmental Stewards Board of the World Economic Forum. Hayley Wheeler Leatham, MD

BioDr. Leatham is a dermatologist and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Her clinical interests include the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, acne, psoriasis, and dermatologic surgery, as well as the full range of general dermatologic skin conditions.
Dr. Leatham’s research interests include the relationship between interferon expression, clinical characteristics, and prognosis in patients with dermatomyositis. She has co-authored articles on clinical factors associated with this condition, as well as other subjects such as blistering dermatosis as a sign of multiple myeloma relapse. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Case Reports, Medicine, and other journals.
Presentations by Dr. Leatham have addressed cutaneous coccidioidomycosis and a range of dermatomyositis-related topics, including interferon activity and malignancy screening outcomes. She has delivered these presentations at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Dermatology, Rheumatologic Dermatology Society, American College of Rheumatology, and Society of Investigative Dermatology.
During medical school, Dr. Leatham was honored to be selected into the Stanford Gold Humanism Honor Society for demonstrating excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion, and dedication to service. She was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society during her chief resident year.
Her community service activities include volunteering for SUNSPORT, the Stanford University Network for Sun Protection, Outreach, Research, and Teamwork, the most comprehensive sun protection outreach and research program of any university in the nation. This initiative provides risk awareness and sun protection education to Stanford outdoor athletes and fans, as well as all students, faculty, and staff. It is a collaborative effort of the Stanford Department of Dermatology, Stanford Cancer Institute, Stanford Hospital & Clinics, and Stanford Athletics. -
