    BioDr. Razavi's clinical interests are in medically refractory epilepsies and using high density EEG (electroencephalogram) for better localization of seizure foci. His research areas include using advanced digital signal processing and engineering techniques for analyzing EEG and using seizures as a model for understanding consciousness.

    Dr. Razavi is the Founder and Director of DEL - Distributed EEG Lab. DEL's vision is to make EEG easy as 1, 2, 3. We turn complexity into simplicity. We are distributed in time and space. DEL was founded in the spirit of cloud computing, networking, and the notion that research in collaboration is more exciting and fruitful than in isolation. Everyone contributes - no matter how small; everyone wins - no matter how big. It was inspired by the mentorship of Dr. Kimford Meador and Dr. Robert Fisher. All you need is access to a computer and the internet.

    DEL is the ideal collaborative environment for students (undergraduate and graduate) and faculty who would like to: (1) apply ready-to-use advanced analytical techniques to test specific hypotheses in cognition, neuroscience and epilepsy, and (2) develop and test new algorithms for analyzing EEG and other biological signals.

    BioStephen Redding's research interests include international trade, economic geography, urban economics, transportation economics and productivity growth. Recent work has been concerned with firm heterogeneity and international trade, multi-product firms, the distributional consequences of globalization, agglomeration forces, and transport infrastructure improvements.

    He is the Kleinheinz Family Professor of International Studies and Professor of Economics in the Economics Department at Stanford University. He is a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute of Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) and a Senior Fellow (Courtesy) at the Hoover Institution. He is Director of the International Trade and Investment (ITI) Program of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He is a fellow of the Econometric Society, an associate editor of Econometrica and the Quarterly Journal of Economics, an International Research Associate of the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics, and a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research.

    Prior to joining Stanford University, he was a Professor of Economics at Princeton University, the London School of Economics and the Yale School of Management. He was awarded the Frisch Medal in 2018, the Bhagwati Prize in 2017, a Global Economic Affairs Prize from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in 2008, and a Philip Leverhulme Prize Fellowship during 2001-4.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory's expertise in cardiovascular phenotyping has led to the development of mouse models of congenital heart disease that recapitulate abnormal loading conditions on the heart. We have used these models to advance our understanding of the mechanisms of right heart failure in children and adults with congenital heart disease with the long term goal of identifying noninvasive diagnostic tools to better assess right ventricular health and to develop right ventricle specific therapeutics.

    BioDr. Reece-Nguyen [he/him] is a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist and Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford Children’s Hospital where he serves as a DEI leader in his department (Director of LGBTQ+ Health), throughout Stanford Medicine (Director of LGBTQ+ Faculty and Community, Office of Faculty Development and Engagement; Medical Director of the Gender Recognition and Affirmative Care through Education (GRACE) Program), and at the National level (Immediate Past Chair DEI Committee - Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, Vice-Chair of the LGBTQ+ Ad Hoc committee - American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the National Co-Director of the Perioperative Anesthesiology Registry for Transgender Adults and Youth (PARTAY) Collaborative).

    As a cisgender gay man, Dr. Reece-Nguyen understands the importance of LGBTQ+ advocacy work and the ever-increasing need for improved LGBTQ+ medical education, focusing specifically on the value of gender-affirming perioperative care. In his role as the Medical Director of the Gender Recognition and Affirmative Care through Education (GRACE) Program at Stanford Medicine and as the Director of LGBTQ+ Health for Stanford Anesthesiology, Dr. Reece-Nguyen’s work promotes perioperative gender-affirming care education, quality improvement, and research efforts aimed at improving the healthcare experience and perioperative outcomes for all gender-diverse patients. He is proud to serve as Co-Director of the Perioperative Anesthesiology Registry for Transgender Adults and Youth (PARTAY) Collaborative, which is a multi-institution collaboration that evaluates practices and optimizes clinical practice guidelines for the perioperative care of TGD individuals undergoing both gender-affirming and non-gender-affirming surgeries. He is also passionate about increasing LGBTQ+ diversity, networking, and mentorship within anesthesiology and improving the capacity of all anesthesiologists to provide optimal care to the LGBTQ+ community.

    Risheen Reejhsinghani

    BioRisheen Reejhsinghani obtained her medical degree in Mumbai, India, followed by an internal medicine residency at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Boston, MA and cardiology fellowship at Baystate Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine, where she served as one of the chief fellows. She subsequently completed an advanced echocardiography fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, and is board certified in echocardiography, general cardiology, and nuclear cardiology.

    Dr. Reejhsinghani practices as a general cardiologist in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she also serves as the associate director for the hospital-based consultative cardiology service. As a clinical cardiologist, she believes strongly in the tenets of evidence-based practice, diagnostic cognizance, and patient education. She also has a specific interest in the burgeoning field of Cardio-Rheumatology, focused on cardiac diseases among patients with rheumatologic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, and ankylosing spondylitis, among others. Her clinical research in this area has focused on the evaluation of structural cardiac disease and diastolic dysfunction in ankylosing spondylitis patients, primarily using echocardiography.

    Dr. Reejhsinghani has an academic focus in medical education, and believes that instilling a love for bedside medicine and the physical exam is the soundest way to empower future generations of learners. To this end, she received additional training in clinical teaching and simulation at the University of California, San Francisco, and has worked extensively on curriculum and course design. She currently serves as the associate program director of the cardiovascular medicine fellowship at Stanford, and is an associate course director for the Year 1 Practice of Medicine Course at the Stanford University medical school. Dr. Reejhsinghani also enjoys writing, particularly about medical education and has written articles for international newspapers, among other publications.

    Angharad Rees-Jones

    Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

    BioDr. Angharad Rees-Jones is a clinical psychologist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. At Stanford, she works on the adult inpatient psychiatric units, providing psychological assessment, brief intervention, and multidisciplinary consultation for individuals with serious mental illness.

    Dr. Rees-Jones has extensive experience working in acute and complex medical and psychiatric settings, including inpatient burn care. Her work with burn survivors focused on supporting patients with traumatic injuries, adjustment, and recovery following life-altering events. Prior to joining Stanford, she also developed and led innovative programs including the Whole Person Care program in Kings County and the Mental Health Diversion program in Tulare County. She has worked as a consultant to Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams and has expertise in conducting LPS evaluations and risk assessments. Prior to her work in the United States, Dr. Rees-Jones trained and practiced as a forensic psychologist within the United Kingdom NHS and Prison Service, working with high-risk individuals and developing expertise in risk assessment, complex presentations, and the interface between mental health and the legal system.

    Her clinical interests include serious mental illness, suicidality and self-harm, trauma, and supporting patients through high-acuity transitions of care using a compassion focused approach. She also spearheaded the integration of a facility dog program within inpatient settings to support patient engagement, emotional regulation, and therapeutic connection. Her therapeutic approach is person-centered, recovery-oriented, and trauma-informed, integrating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). She emphasizes practical skill-building, values-based action, and collaboration within interdisciplinary teams. Dr. Rees-Jones is also actively involved in teaching and mentorship, providing supervision and training for psychology practicum students and interdisciplinary education for medical staff. Her work is focused on improving access to psychologically informed care within inpatient and acute psychiatric settings.

    BioAlexis is a Propel postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health in the School of Medicine with Dr. Michelle Odden’s lab. Her research is broadly focused on the causes and consequences of racial disparities in accelerated aging. She is particularly interested in the interplay of structural and interpersonal racism, and the psychobiological mechanisms in which they produce early health declines in minoritized populations. Her work to date has focused on the health of Black women as they enter into life-stages, such as the midlife menopausal transition, where cardio-metabolic risk is high. Alexis also has a strong interest in causal inference, and applies causal inference theory and methods to these areas of research to mitigate and quantify bias.

    BioByron Reeves, PhD, is the Paul C. Edwards Professor of Communication at Stanford and
    Professor (by courtesy) in the Stanford School of Education. Byron has a long history of
    experimental research on the psychological processing of media, and resulting responses and
    effects. He has studied how media influence attention, memory and emotional responses and has
    applied the research in the areas of speech dialogue systems, interactive games, advanced
    displays, social robots, and autonomous cars. Byron has recently launched (with Stanford
    colleagues Nilam Ram and Thomas Robinson) the Human Screenome Project (Nature, 2020),
    designed to collect moment-by-moment changes in technology use across applications, platforms
    and screens.

    At Stanford, Byron has been Director of the Center for the Study of Language and Information,
    and Co-Director of the H-STAR Institute (Human Sciences and Technologies Advanced
    Research), and he was the founding Director of mediaX at Stanford, a university-industry
    program launched in 2001 to facilitate discussion and research at the intersection of academic
    and applied interests. Byron has worked at Microsoft Research and with several technology
    startups, and has been involved with media policy at the FTC, FCC, US Congress and White
    House. He is an elected Fellow of the International Communication Association, and recipient of ICA Fellows book award for The Media Equation (with Prof. Clifford Nass), and the Novim Foundation Epiphany Science and Society Award. Byron’s PhD in Communication is from Michigan State University.

    BioDr. Matthew Reeves is the Executive Director and founder of the DuPont Clinic, a center providing patient-centered abortion care in all trimesters. With the team at the DuPont Clinic, Dr. Reeves has worked to re-envision the patient experience, create a new patient flow without a waiting room, develop new shortened protocols for later abortion, improve nurse-administered moderate sedation techniques, and introduce new and redesigned gynecologic instruments. Dr. Reeves also serves on the board of directors of DKT International, a social marketing organization that provided over 44 million couple-years of contraception in over 25 countries and is now the sole distributor for Ipas aspirators and Sino-Implant II. Previously, he was Medical Director of the National Abortion Federation where he worked to improve the quality of abortion care across North and South America. From 2010-2014, Dr. Reeves was the Chief Medical Officer of WomanCare Global where his work focused on expanding use of manual uterine aspiration and introducing mifepristone and levonorgestrel implants to new markets. Throughout his career, Dr. Reeves has worked on clinical research, primarily in the areas of post-abortal intrauterine contraception and improvements in abortion service delivery. In addition to this appointment at Stanford, he currently has an appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Reeves attended Harvard Medical School and completed residency in obstetrics & gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He then completed the fellowship in Clinical Ultrasound at UCSF followed by the Fellowship in Family Planning at the University of Pittsburgh.

    BioI am a social epidemiologist and serve as a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health and in the Department of Medicine in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health. I joined the faculty at Stanford School of Medicine in 2011.

    I am Director of the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences. In this position, I am committed to making high-value data resources available to researchers across disciplines in order to better enable them to answer their most pressing clinical and population health questions.

    My own research is focused on understanding the health implications of the myriad decisions that are made by corporations and governments every day - decisions that profoundly shape the social and economic worlds in which we live and work. While these changes are often invisible to us on a daily basis, these seemingly minor actions and decisions form structural nudges that can create better or worse health at a population level. My work demonstrates the health implications of corporate and governmental decisions that can give the public and policy makers evidence to support new strategies for promoting health and well-being. In all of his work, I have a focus on the implications of these exposures for health inequalities.

    Since often policy and programmatic changes can take decades to influence health, my work also includes more basic research in understanding biological signals that may act as early warning signs of systemic disease, in particular accelerated aging. I examine how social and economic policy changes influence a range of early markers of disease and aging, with a particular recent focus on DNA methylation. I am supported by several grants from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities to develop new more sensitive ways to understand the health implications of social and economic policy changes.

    BioRob Reich is the McGregor-Girand Professor of Social Ethics of Science and Technology at Stanford University. In 2024-25, Rob was on public service leave as Senior Advisor to the United States Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute.

    His scholarship in political theory engages with the work of social scientists and engineers. His newest work is on governance of frontier science and technology. His most recent books are System Error: Where Big Tech Went Wrong and How We Can Reboot (with Mehran Sahami and Jeremy M. Weinstein, HarperCollins 2021) and Digital Technology and Democratic Theory (edited with Lucy Bernholz and Hélène Landemore, University of Chicago Press 2021). He has also written widely about philanthropy, including Just Giving: Why Philanthropy is Failing Democracy and How It Can Do Better (Princeton University Press, 2018) and Philanthropy in Democratic Societies: History, Institutions, Values (edited with Chiara Cordelli and Lucy Bernholz, University of Chicago Press, 2016). His early work is focused on democracy and education, including Bridging Liberalism and Multiculturalism in American Education (University of Chicago Press, 2002) and Education, Justice, and Democracy (edited with Danielle Allen, University of Chicago Press, 2013). He has testified before Congress and written widely for the public, including for the New York Times, Washington Post, Wired, Time Magazine, The Atlantic, The Guardian, and the Stanford Social Innovation Review.
    Rob is the recipient of multiple teaching awards, including the Walter J. Gores award, Stanford’s highest honor for teaching. He was a sixth grade teacher at Rusk Elementary School in Houston, Texas before attending graduate school. He is a board member of the magazine Boston Review and at the Spencer Foundation. He helped to create the global movement #GivingTuesday and served as its inaugural board chair.

    William R. Timken Professor in the Graduate School of Business, Emeritus

    BioStefan Reichelstein is known internationally for his research on the interface of management accounting and economics. Much of his work has addressed issues in cost- and profitability analysis, decentralization, internal pricing and performance measurement. His research projects have spanned analytical models, empirical work and field studies. Reichelstein’s papers have been published consistently in leading management and economic journals. Insights from his research have been applied by a range of corporations and government agencies. In recent years, Reichelstein has also studied the cost competitiveness of low-carbon energy solutions, with a particular focus on solar PV and carbon capture by fossile fuel power plants.

    Stefan Reichelstein received his Ph.D. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in 1984. Prior to that, he completed his undergraduate studies in economics at the University of Bonn in Germany. Over the past 30 years, Reichelstein has served on the faculties of the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, the University of Vienna in Austria, and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. His teaching has spanned financial and managerial accounting courses offered to undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral students. In recent years, he has introduced new courses on Sustainability and Clean Energy at the Stanford Business School. Reichelstein’s research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and a range of private foundations; several of his papers have won “Best-Paper” awards. Reichelstein serves on the editorial boards of several journals; he is also currently an editor of the Review of Accounting Studies and Foundations and Trends in Accounting. Until 2010, he served as the Department Editor for Accounting at Management Science. Professor Reichelstein has been a consultant to select companies and non-profit organizations. He has received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Fribourg (2008) and Mannheim (2011). In 2007, Reichelstein was appointed a Honorar-Professor at the University of Vienna.

    BioJames Reichert is Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Literature in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Stanford University. He has previously published In the Company of Men: Representations of Male-Male Sexuality in Meiji Literature (Stanford University Press, 2006). His forthcoming book, Literature for the Masses: Japanese Period Fiction, 1913-1941 (University of Hawai'i Press, 2025), explores popular adventure tales about premodern swordsmen. He has also written on prewar Japanese detective fiction, silent Japanese film, Edo-period books, Boys’ Love comics, and Japanese Romanticism.

    BioDr. Reicherter the director of the Human Rights in Trauma Mental Health Laboratory.

    He has expertise in the area of cross-cultural trauma psychiatry, having spent more than a decade dedicated to providing a combination of administrative and clinical services in trauma mental health locally and internationally. He is on the List of Experts for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and for the United Nations’ International Criminal Court. He is on the Fulbright Specialists Roster for his work in international trauma mental health. He is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Innovations in Global Health at Stanford University. He has created and cultivated new clinical rotations for residency education and medical school education in the community clinics that he operates. And he has created new opportunities for resident, medical student, and undergraduate education in Global Mental Health.

    He has also been involved in the creation of clinical mental health programs for underserved populations in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is the Faculty Adviser for the Stanford’s Free Clinic Mental Health Program.

    After receiving degrees in Psychobiology and Philosophy from the University of California at Santa Cruz, Dr. Reicherter completed his doctorate in medicine at New York Medical College. He completed internship and residency and served as Chief Resident at Stanford University Hospitals and Clinics.

    A primary interest of our lab is to understand how nerve cells make and recycle neurotransmitters, the small molecules that they use to communicate with each other. In better defining these processes we hope to achieve our long-term goal of identifying novel sites for treatment of diseases such as epilepsy and Parkinson Disease. In our studies on neurotransmitter metabolism we have focused our efforts on transporters, a functional class of proteins that move neurotransmitters and other small molecules across membranes in cells. Transporters have many characteristics that make them excellent pharmacological targets, and not surprisingly some of the most effective treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders are directed at transporters. We are specifically focusing on two groups of transporters – vesicular neurotransmitter transporters that package neurotransmitters into vesicles for release, and glutamine transporters that shuttle glutamine, a precursor for two major neurotransmitters glutamate and GABA, to neurons from glia, the supporting cells that surround them. We are pursuing these goals through molecular and biochemical studies, and, in collaboration with the Huguenard and Prince labs, through physiological and biosensor based imaging studies to better understand how pharmacological targeting of these molecules will influence neurological disorders.

    A second interest of our lab is to define mechanism underlying the pathology of lysosomal storage disorders. Lysosomes are membrane bound acidic intracellular organelles filled with hydrolytic enzymes that normally function as recycling centers within cells by breaking down damaged cellular macromolecules. Several degenerative diseases designated as lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) are associated with the accumulation of material within lysosomes. Tay-Sachs disease, Neimann-Pick disease and Gaucher disease are some of the more common LSDs. For reasons that remain incompletely understood, these diseases often affect the nervous system out of proportion to other organs. As a model for LSDs we are studying the lysosomal free sialic acid storage disorders. These diseases are the result of a defect in transport of sialic acid across lysosomal membranes and are associated with mutations in the gene encoding the sialic acid transporter sialin. We are using molecular, genetic and biochemical approaches to better define the normal function of sialin and to determine how loss of sialin function leads to neurodevelopmental defects and neurodegeneration associated with the lysosomal free sialic acid storage disorders.

She is dedicated to providing comprehensive obstetrical and gynecological care to women of all ages in a compassionate and patient-centered manner. Her clinical interests include health education and wellness, pregnancy, adolescent health, contraception and minimally invasive surgery. When she is not taking care of patients, she enjoys reading, baking, Pilates and exploring her native Bay Area with her husband and young children.

    BioMarissa Reitsma, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Health Policy at Stanford University School of Medicine. She obtained her PhD in Health Policy at Stanford in 2024, during which time she was a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, Stanford Data Science Scholar, and NSF Graduate Research Fellow. Previously, she worked on the Global Burden of Disease Study at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Reitsma develops computational models to quantify disease burden, evaluate the benefits and costs of interventions, and support evidence-based policies across a range of priorities in public health, with a focus on health equity.

    Reitsma aims to build simulation models that integrate the overlapping risk factors, social determinants, and syndemic conditions that disproportionately impact marginalized populations and contribute to health inequities. She also investigates the potential for multimodal data synthesis to inform these models, improve population health decision-making, and reduce health disparities. Her work spans multiple communicable and non-communicable conditions linked to behavioral risk factors, including tobacco use, drug use, and obesity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she collaborated closely with state and local public health agencies to inform their decision-making.

    BioYunfei Ren (1987, Wuhan, China) is a visual artist living in San Francisco, working in installation, photography, sound and sculpture. His work centers on the immigrant experience, exploring the complexity of identity and belonging in the context of history, citizenship and queerness. Inspired by his personal experience, Ren's practice investigates the history of racial prejudice and heightens the tension between the past and the present.

    He earned a BA in French Literature from Middlebury College (2010) and is now an MFA candidate at Stanford University (2024). His work was recently exhibited at de Young Museum, Chinese Historical Society Museum, and was featured in the Washington Post. In 2021 and 2022, he was an artist-in-residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts.

    BioDr. Renault has devoted her career to caring for vulnerable patient populations, both domestically and overseas. She completed her medical school and residency training at the University of Chicago, caring for underserved patients on Chicago's South Side, followed by a Chief Resident year at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, the public hospital serving the uninsured in Chicago. She began her career in global health as an Infectious Diseases fellow at Stanford, validating low-cost HIV diagnostics in Burkina Faso, and providing clinical service and teaching in India and Zimbabwe as a fellow, and later in Thailand, Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya as one of our Infectious Diseases faculty. Her clinical work is focused on caring for our veteran population, working to empower veterans to engage in their care, often in the setting of significant mental illness.

    Dr. Renault is most passionate about medical education and program development to combat global antimicrobial resistance through antimicrobial stewardship, to create opportunities for the Internal Medicine residents centering on caring for vulnerable patient populations, and to develop impactful and sustainable programs in collaboration with our low- and middle-income partners for our Center for Innovation in Global Health. She served as Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program for 4 years prior to transitioning to her current role as Program Lead for Global Health, for which she leads the Global Health Track for the Internal Medicine residency program and develops global health initiatives for the Department of Medicine. She co-founded and has been director of the Stanford 2-week intensive global health course since its inception in 2012, she has structured trainee and faculty rotations based on evolving needs of our partner sites in Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka, she is the faculty lead for the ID/antimicrobial stewardship partnership between Stanford and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya through the AMPATH Consortium, and she is leading Stanford's Internal Medicine virtual case-based education initiative to support our newest medical school partner in Negele Arsi, Ethiopia.

    Dr. Renault strives to augment Stanford's contributions and support for underserved patient populations in the United States. She established resident rotations in Shiprock, New Mexico and Chinle, Arizona through the Indian Health Service, and she is Faculty Advisor for the Internal Medicine Health Equity, Advocacy and Research concentration in the residency program. She also aspires to improve resources for women physicians. In 2016, Dr. Renault established the GME Women in Medicine Leadership Council, with the intention of creating community and encouraging conversations about professional and personal life decisions as women in the field of medicine. She is passionate about mentoring through sharing personal experiences, creating an environment that encourages reflection, and building skills to address challenges unique to women in medicine.

    In 2022, in recognition of her passion for medical education and her success in program development, Dr. Renault was asked to join the leadership at Palo Alto Veterans Health Care System as Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Education. In this role, she works with rotation directors to optimize their respective rotations to offer robust educational opportunities for trainees across specialties who are rotating at the Palo Alto VA.

She is a nationally and internationally known medical educator having won multiple teaching awards for her innovative strategies in pathology education. She is actively involved in undergraduate medical education, resident education, and continuing medical education for practicing pathologists as well as a practicing breast and gynecologic pathologist.

    BioKavita Renduchintala, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at LAC + USC Medicine Center in Los Angeles.

    Dr. Renduchintala’s clinical background includes caring for hospitalized patients across a range of internal medicine settings. Before joining Stanford, she worked at the University of Chicago, where she provided both general medicine and oncologic hospitalist care. She has also held roles in oncologic hospitalist medicine at Moffitt Cancer Center and in surgical co-management at Keck Hospital of USC.

    Her academic interests focus on medical education, with a particular focus on transitions that occur during medical training. She is dedicated to supporting trainees and enhancing the learning environment in academic hospital medicine. Her research has also explored vaccine uptake among cancer survivors.

    BioProfessor Resina has authored thirteen books, most recently Luchino Visconti. Filmmaker and Philosopher. London: Bloomsbury, 2022. The book focuses on the director’s German Trilogy —The Damned (1969) Death in Venice (1971), and Ludwig (1972). This set of films is thematically unified through the exploration of decadence, combining a stunning aesthetic with philosophical implications. The book traces the philosophical themes, relating them to dominant currents of thought and sensibility in the periods under representation.

    Resina is also the author of The Ghost in the Constitution: Historical Memory and Denial in Spanish Society. Liverpool University Press, 2017. This book is a reflection on the political use of historical memory focusing on the case of Spain. It analyses the philosophical implications of the transference of the notion of memory from the individual consciousness to the collective subject and considers the conflation of epistemology with ethics. A subtheme is the origin and transmission of political violence and its endurance in the form of “negationism”. The book engages controversial issues, such as the relation between memory and imputation, the obstacles to reconciliation, and the problems arising from the existence of not only different but also conflicting memories about the past. Another book from the same year is Josep Pla: The World Seen in the Form of Articles. Toronto University Press, 2017, which received the North American Catalan Society award for best book on Catalan Studies in 2019. This book condenses Pla's 47-volume work into 11 thematic units devoted to a central aspect of Pla's oeuvre. Resina explores the modalities of Pla's writing: stylistic, phenomenological, political, his relation to language, fiction, food, and landscape, and his approach to sexuality, women, and death. It introduces the reader to the colorful world of Catalonia's greatest 20th century prose writer through the author's gaze. Pla was a privileged observer of some of the crucial events of the 20th century, but he also captured the sensual infrastructure of his own country by recording every aspect of its reality.

    Previous books include Del Hispanismo a los Estudios Ibéricos. Una propuesta federativa para el ámbito cultural. Madrid: Biblioteca Nueva, 2009. In this book, Resina lays out the rationale for the overcoming of Hispanic Studies by a new discipline of Iberian Studies, contending that the field's response to the crisis of the Humanities should not lie in the retrenchment into the national philological traditions. Another publication since joining Stanford is Barcelona's Vocation of Modernity: Rise and Decline of an Urban Image (Stanford UP, 2008). This book traces the development of Barcelona's modern image since the late 19th century through the 20th century through texts that foreground key social and historical issues. The book ends with a highly critical view on the post-Olympic period.

    Resina has edited thirteen collections of essays on varied topics, most recently, What to do with ruins? Contemporary uses of ruination. Liverpool University Press, 2025. He has published extensively in specialized journals, such as PMLA, MLN, New Literary History, Modern Language Quarterly, and Angelaki, and has contributed to a large number of critical volumes. From 1999 to 2005 he was the Editor of Diacritics. For many years he has been a regular contributor to the Barcelona daily press. He has held teaching positions at Cornell University, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and Northwestern University, as well as visiting appointments at foreign universities, and received awards such as the Alexander von Humboldt and the Fullbright fellowships, and a fellowship at the Internationales Kolleg Morphomata Center for Advanced Studies of the University of Cologne. He has been distinguished with the Cross of St. George, one of the highest awards bestowed by the Government of Catalonia.

    BioDr. Rhee is a physiatrist and a clinical assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation. For patients with spine and musculoskeletal conditions, he focuses on providing exceptional care emphasizing minimally invasive solutions designed to optimize symptom managementand patient function.

    Building on his background in engineering and on his specialized medical training and experience, Dr. Rhee welcomes opportunities to combine medical, mechanical, and interpersonal approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of each patient. He offers a full range of treatment modalities, including epidural steroid injection procedures, sacroiliac and facet joint injections, trigger point and soft tissue injections, orthopedic joint injections, and more. He also provides medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablations, and performs electrodiagnostic studies.

    Among the wide range of conditions that Dr. Rhee treats are bursitis, herniated discs, radiculopathy, sciatica, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and spondylosis. He also has treated many forms of joint and muscle pain: facet joint, back, neck, hip, and sacroiliac joint pain.

    Dr. Rhee’s experience encompasses short-term and long-term care for both acute and chronic conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries, spinal problems, mixed spine-neck and spine-shoulder disorders, and peripheral damage. Many of the cases he treats are injury-related, while a significant number of others are associated with aging. Another portion of his patient population presents with conditions stemming from developmental anomalies.

    Prior to joining Stanford Health Care, Dr. Rhee was in private practice in the Bay Area. Previously, he also served in the US Army as a troop medical clinic officer-in-charge and as a brigade surgeon.

    Dr. Rhee is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, North American Spine Society, and Spine Intervention Society.

One focus is mechanotransduction, where sound is converted into an electrical signal. As a major site for dysfunction, a more detailed understand will provide a means toward intervention. We develop new antibiotics to limit ototoxicity. We investigate drug delivery methods from surgical approaches to slow release systems, including gene therapy tools. We are studying cognitive decline following hearing loss.

    BioDr. Richards is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and has a Certified Additional Qualification for Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery. For over 15 years he has specialized in the treatment of ligamentous, joint, tendon, nerve and bone injuries of the Hand, Elbow, Wrist and Shoulder.

    He has served the Bay Area community as a UCSF Assistant Professor as a volunteer educator at San Francisco General Hospital, by teaching and treating complex trauma at the Alameda County Level One Trauma Center-Highland Hospital, and through various volunteer roles on athletic fields around the Bay.

    Dr. Richards obtained his Bachelors Degree in Neurobiology at Cornell University, his Masters of Public Health at the Columbia University, and his Medical Degree at New York Medical College.

    He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the San Francisco Orthopedic Residency Program. He then returned to Cornell University’s Hospital for Special Surgery to complete his fellowship training in hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery.

    Until joining Stanford in 2023, he had been in private practice in the East Bay since 2006. He has volunteered locally in a variety of organizations and internationally on several continents.

    BioDr. Jenae Richardson is a Clinical Assistant Professor and a CA Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the INSPIRE Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. She also works in the acute psychiatric inpatient units at Stanford Hospital. She specializes in utilizing evidence-based treatments (EBTs) to treat individuals with psychosis and has worked with this population across inpatient and outpatient settings. She is passionate about improving the dissemination and implementation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp), and at the INSPIRE Clinic, she leads CBTp trainings for mental health professionals and provides CBTp to individuals with psychosis. Dr. Richardson completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Arizona’s Early Psychosis Intervention Center and her postdoctoral fellowship at Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. She obtained her doctorate in clinical psychology from Long Island University Post and conducted research exploring barriers to implementing CBTp in the United States.

    BioJudith Richardson is a senior lecturer in English and associate director for the American Studies Program. After receiving her PhD from Harvard University, Judith began teaching at Stanford in 2001, offering a range of courses on American literature, including classes on women writers, early American literature, autobiographies, and the literature of cities. The author of Possessions: The History and Uses of Haunting in the Hudson Valley (2003) she continues to write and lecture—at Stanford and beyond—on the history and literature of New York, and on issues of place and cultural memory more broadly. She is currently working on a book about nineteenth-century America’s “plant-mindedness,” its multivalent obsession with vegetable matters.

    BioJohn Rick’s research focuses on prehistoric archaeology and anthropology of hunter-gatherers and initial hierarchical societies, stone tool analysis and digital methodologies, Latin America, Southwestern U.S. Rick’s major research efforts have included long-term projects studying early hunting societies of the high altitude puna grasslands of central Peru, and currently he directs a major research project at the monumental World Heritage site of Chavín de Huántar aimed at exploring the foundations of authority in the central Andes. Other field projects include work on early agricultural villages in the American Southwest, and a recently-initiated project on the Preclassic and Early Classic archaeology of the Guatemalan highlands near Panajachel, Atitlan. Current emphasis is on employing dimensional analytical digital techniques to the study of landscape and architecture, and on exploring the contexts and motivations for the development of sociopolitical inequalities.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am a variationist sociolinguist (someone who studies language variation, often quantitatively, in relation to society and culture). I’m interested in understanding the relations between language variation, social structure and meaning, and language change, from descriptive, theoretical and applied perspectives.

    A lot of my work has been devoted to understanding the linguistic, social and stylistic constraints on specific linguistic variables, like the variation between Guyanese pronouns am, she, and her in “e like am” (deep creole, basilect) versus “e like she” (intermediate creole, mesolect) versus “He likes her” (standard English, acrolect). Or, to take an American example, the variation between all and like as quotative introducers in “He’s all/like ‘I don’t know’.” But I’ve also been concerned with trying to figure out where such variables come from historically, and whether they represent ongoing or completed change. I’ve also used the data from specific variables to address larger methodological and theoretical concepts in sociolinguistics, like how best to conceptualize the speech community and analyze linguistic variation by social class and ethnicity, or to assess the role of addressee versus topic in style shifting or the validity of the hyothesis that linguistic and social constraints are essentially independent (in their effects, not frequencies).

    My data come primarily from English-based creoles of the Caribbean (especially my native Guyanese Creole, but also Jamaican and Barbadian) and from colloquial American English (especially African American Vernacular English, but also, recently, from computer corpora, like Google newsgroup data). I’ve also been interested, increasingly since the 1990s, in how sociolinguistic research can be applied to help us understand and overcome the challenges that vernacular and creole speakers face in schools, where standard/mainstream varieties are expected.

    BioDr. Rider is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neuromuscular neurologist with the Neuromuscular Program at the Stanford Neuroscience Health Center. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Neurology & Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Rider specializes in treating neuromuscular disease, including motor neuron disease, disorders of the neuromuscular junction, peripheral and focal neuropathies, as well as other acquired or genetic conditions that cause muscular deterioration, muscle weakness, and nerve damage. He practices both Comprehensive Neurology and Neuromuscular Medicine in Palo Alto and Emeryville.

    Dr. Rider earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco and completed residency at Stanford. He also completed fellowship training in Neuromuscular Medicine at UCSF. He has a passion for teaching neurology to students and patients. He was awarded the Fishers and Dunn teaching award for medical student teaching as a resident.
    Dr. Rider is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI am interested in the role that social hierarchies in everyday social relations play in the larger processes of stratification and inequality in a society. My research focuses on interpersonal status hierarchies, which are hierarchies of esteem and influence, and the significance of these hierarchies for inequalities based on gender, race, and social class.

    BioDr. Rieger is a Clinical Professor of Pathology and Dermatology at Stanford University. She received her M.D., Ph.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed her Dermatology Residency and Dermatopathology Fellowship at Stanford University. She is board certified in Dermatology and Dermatopathology. She evaluates skin specimens in the Pathology department, where her interests include histopathologic findings in cutaneous lymphoma, hospitalized patients, and patients with autoimmune disease. She also sees patients in the Stanford dermatology clinic in Portola Valley, where her clinical interest is adult general dermatology.

    BioDr. Fran Riley is a physician engineer and Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University. She obtained an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and robotics, she obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo where she focused on robotics. Driven by her passion for merging medicine and technology, she pursued a Master's degree in Computer Science at The Johns Hopkins University, where she developed a motor controller for an early prototypes of the Da Vinci robot for ENT surgical applications. Dr. Riley's research also focused on utilizing real-time monitoring data to enhance the treatment of traumatic brain injuries in the pediatric intensive care unit.

    Following her work in robotics and computer science, Dr. Riley transitioned to the healthcare industry, where she served as a product manager at Microsoft. In this role, she lead multidisciplinary teams to develop multiple features for an electronic medical record dedicated to data analytics. The product was then acquired by GE Healthcare.

    Dr. Riley then pursued a medical degree at the University of Vermont, followed by a residency and chief residency at Maimonides Medical Center. She then completed a fellowship in emergency ultrasound at Columbia University Medical Center.

    At Stanford, Dr. Riley is an integral part of the Stanford Emergency Medicine Partnership Program (STEPP), utilizing her technical expertise to identify industry partners for research collaborations and product development. She also actively contributes to a hospital-wide committee dedicated to evaluating the use of informatics for clinical care, prioritizing patient safety and high-quality care.

    Dr. Riley's clinical research focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence in image recognition for regional wall motion abnormalities, specifically utilizing point-of-care ultrasound to diagnose acute coronary syndrome.

    BioPlants are increasingly vulnerable to environmental stressors—such as pathogen infection, drought, and heat—from climate change. These challenges threaten global food security and limit the carbon sequestration potential of plants. Our research goal is to sustainably enhance plant productivity and resilience through protein engineering. We engineer proteins involved in plant immune and hormone signaling pathways using directed evolution in high-throughput single cell systems. Directed evolution is a synthetic biology approach that enables rapid development of proteins with novel or improved functions. We combine this approach with machine learning, which allows us to learn from large datasets generated during the directed evolution process. Engineered proteins are then introduced into plants to enhance crop yields and climate resilience.

    BioDr. Huijun Ring received her PhD in molecular biology and genetics from Cornell University and completed her post-doctoral medical genetics training at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is a clinical molecular geneticist and board-certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics.

    Dr. Ring is an experienced biotech entrepreneur and executive. Previously she worked at Incyte Pharmaceuticals and DNA Direct in Silicon Valley. She was the founder and CEO of iDNA Inc, a precision medicine company. iDNA Inc. was named as one of the fastest growing technology companies in China by Deloitte and was acquired by a public company. She has also cofounded and advised several biotech startups in Silicon Valley and mentored many first-time entrepreneurs.

    Currently, Dr. Ring works on genomic medicine, AI health and longevity research. She mentors students from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and junior women faculty in science and medicine through the Stanford University Faculty Development Office. Additionally, Dr. Ring teaches the course "Science and History of Traditional Chinese Medicine" and "Exploring Chinese Medicine". Dr. Ring is co-founder of Stanford Hub for AI Wellbeing and Longevity.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsThe primary subjects of my research interests over the past ten years have been clinical reviews of series of patients with a variety of pediatric orthopaedic treatable conditions. These have included neuromuscular scoliosis, developmental dislocation of the hip, and deformities in cerebral palsy.
