Current Research and Scholarly Interests

Research
The structural geology and tectonics research group addresses topical problems in structural geology, regional geology and tectonics, and how rocks deform--at the atomic to the plate tectonic scale. The goals of our research are to contribute to our basic knowledge of deformation at the lithospheric scale, how deformation at depth is coupled to that at the surface, and to better understand the driving forces for this deformation. We utilize a variety of approaches, both traditional and innovative. Our work is field-based, involving an important component of geologic mapping in addition to structural and microstructural analysis, stratigraphic and sedimentologic studies, metamorphic and igneous petrology, cross-section balancing, modeling and geophysical data. Timing and rates of deformational events, based on geochronologic and thermochronologic data sets, are key to our research.

Teaching
I teach mostly at the upper undergraduate level with courses in field geology, structural geology and tectonics, and thin section petrography. At the graduate level, I organize topical seminars in tectonics and regional geology, field-based research projects and trips, and teach advanced classes in rock microstructures and deformation.

  • Structural architecture and evolution of the southern flank of the Brooks Range fold and thrust belt, Arctic Alaska, NSF Stanford University with Stockholm University, Sweden (7/31/2017 - 7/31/2020)

A broad zone of fault-related deformation, called the Schist Belt, stretches E-W for more than 600 km along the southern side of the Brooks Range in northern Alaska. This fault zone played a fundamental role in the formation of flanking sedimentary basins, the Yukon-Koyukuk Basin to the south and the Colville Basin to the north of the Brooks Range. It is also the main structure separating southern Alaska, with a geologic history tied to the Pacific plate margin, from northern Alaska, whose history is tied to plate tectonics in the Arctic Ocean. Despite its impressive physical extent, questions about its exact age and hypotheses about why and how it developed are debated. This project will study the geology and deformation history of this fault zone, sharing logistics with an international Swedish project aimed at understanding the geology of the Arctic region. The proposed research represents a contribution to basic science that will improve our understanding of the geology of the Arctic, one of our last remaining frontiers on earth. Current global interest in the Arctic makes this region a superb arena for international collaborations and offers a unique opportunity for graduate students to engage in field-based research, learn state-of-the-art analytical techniques and build their careers. Training graduate students in Arctic geoscience and international collaboration contributes to a diverse, globally competitive STEM workforce for the U.S., particularly in the Arctic. International communication and collaboration is a top priority for the U.S. as Arctic nations chart their offshore extended economic zones per the U.N. Conference on the Law of the Sea, Article 76. The proposed research will also produce maps and data compilations that will represent contributions that will be useful to a broad cross-section of society as related to natural resources, both mineral and hydrocarbons, geologic hazards and land-use as well as contribute to our knowledge of the geology of the Gates of the Arctic National Park.
Along its northern side, the Brooks Range orogen of Arctic Alaska is a Jurassic to Early Cretaceous belt of crustal shortening characterized by a classic thrust belt architecture consisting of imbricated passive margin sequences and allochthonous oceanic arc sequences. The structurally deeper, polymetamorphic core of the Brooks Range is now understood to include portions of the Arctic Caledonides and the Baltic Timanides, translated to their current position by the opening of the Arctic Ocean. The Schist Belt is defined as a zone of penetrative deformation whose fabrics and age (based on 40Ar/39Ar data) are interpreted in remarkably different ways by previous workers. Our proposed work will test hypotheses and address questions about the age and origin of this belt. Geologic mapping coupled with meso- and microstructural work, including the study of quartz lattice preferred orientations, will permit along strike comparisons of deformation within the belt and determine if it represents thrust or normal sense shear. Thermochronology transects using 40Ar/39Ar methods and U-Pb dating of metamorphic zircon growth will place brackets on the age of deformation and metamorphism. Apatite fission track dating will allow us to define the geometry of large-scale Cenozoic structures that led to the remarkable and unique exposures of Schist Belt rocks. Our proposed work provides a unique opportunity to join efforts with a 5-year campaign funded by the Swedish Research Council to P.I. Victoria Pease (Stockholm University) and continue to contribute to the broad international effort focused on the origin of the Arctic Ocean. It also offers us the opportunity to collaborate with a substantial scientific mission involving the deployment of EarthScope’s Transportable Array across the state of Alaska, which will ultimately provide a lithospheric context for this study.

  • Evolution of the Boundary Canyon Fault, Funeral Mountains, Death Valley, Stanford University (2018 - Present)

Understanding the deep crustal processes that drive active faulting and earthquakes in continental settings is viewed as a top scientific challenge in the earth sciences but is an inherently difficult problem to work on because of the minimum 5-10 km depth to the earthquake zone in the crust. It’s too deep to drill! However, normal fault systems in the Basin and Range province are unusual in that they are often uplifted and eroded after their motion has ceased, providing opportunities for the detailed study of faults to great depths in the crust, down to the Elastico-Frictional to Viscous (EFV) (or brittle-ductile) transition zone. These remarkable down-section views of faults owe their exposure to normal fault slip, differential vertical uplift, and tilting of older faults by younger faults. Differential vertical uplift of the deep portions of normal faults may also be related to doming and tilting caused by the flow of the deeper crust into the faulted and extended region. This combination of factors has led to the exposure of the Miocene Boundary Canyon fault in the Funeral Mountains, Death Valley, providing an exceptional opportunity to study a normal fault that once cut from the surface of the earth to depths of 10-20 km, with fault-related rocks that range from breccia and gouge in the brittle crust to mylonites related to ductile flow at depth. We are currently studying the map-scale structural evolution of this fault, determining its offset, characterizing the fault zone rocks developed along its exposed extent and specifying the nature/conditions of strain accommodation in footwall rocks with increasing depth in the crust.

  • Exploring for fault-hosted geothermal systems using low temperature thermochronology and thermo-kinematic modeling: a pilot study on the Kigluaik normal fault near Nome, Alaska, TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy Stanford University (2019 - 2022)

Geothermal energy is a vastly underutilized source of carbon-free power whose development remains hindered by significant pre-drilling uncertainty. Many of the fault-hosted geothermal systems producing power today had no obvious surface manifestation such as hot springs, fumaroles, or sinter mounds, and were discovered only by accident. A critical uncertainty when exploring for these types of “blind” geothermal systems is whether a recently active fault mapped at the surface remains permeable at depth and is acting as a dominant pathway for hydrothermal circulation or whether natural processes have sealed the fault since its last rupture. Mineral thermochronometry, which can deduce the temperature history of rocks, when paired with thermo-kinematic modeling offers a promising means to constrain the extent and duration of even blind and/or transient hydrothermal events within a fault zone. This study will apply these methods to a regional fault system in western Alaska which has not been tested for its blind geothermal potential. If successful, this study would aid ongoing exploration work in the region aimed at meeting the energy needs of remote Arctic communities. And, more broadly, it would help refine and demonstrate this potentially cost-effective exploration tool for use in geothermal exploration programs around the globe.
