In September 2016, Lauren Schoenthaler (she/her) was named Senior Associate Vice Provost, Institutional Equity & Access. In this role, Lauren is responsible for the oversight, implementation, and coordination of programs and offices that ensure equity and access across the Stanford community. The offices within Institutional Equity & Access include: Diversity & Access, University Ombuds, and the SHARE Title IX Office.The senior associate vice provost, a member of the provost’s leadership team, works with these offices and other colleagues across the university to address matters of institutional policy and resource allocation related to equal opportunity, affirmative action, gender equity, and compliance with Title IX and other nondiscrimination laws.
Lauren is committed to ensuring that there are no barriers of discrimination or harassment for any Stanford community member. She is an eternal optimist and believes that the eradication of discrimination and harassment within our Stanford community is possible with ongoing prevention education and diligence.
Lauren has been at Stanford since 2001, serving as a Senior University Counsel through 2016 before accepting her current role. Lauren is a Stanford representative to the National Academy of Sciences Engineering and Medicine's Action Collaborative in Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education. In 2017, she was a member of the ABA Criminal Justice Section Task Force on Campus Sexual Assault, which provided recommended best practices for schools to address sexual assault. She is an expert in the development of polices and procedures relating to anti-discrimination and anti-harassment, and has been part of the drafting team to develop Stanford's current policy and procedures in these areas. With other California campus representatives, she has consulted with state legislators on the development of California law. At Stanford, she is a member of the committee reviewing the student disciplinary Judicial Charter and is an advisor to Stanford's Act of Intolerance Protocol. In addition, in her former role in the legal office, Lauren advised on matters involving access, equity and discrimination concerns, served on the Board of Judicial Affairs, and was part of the Provost's Task Force on Sexual Assault. In the legal office, Lauren also provided counsel on matters relating to student affairs, copyright, trademark, privacy, art, and dispute resolution.
In her earlier work in the private sector, Lauren was an associate of the firm today known as Pillsbury Winthrop, practicing primarily in the areas of antitrust, intellectual property and general litigation. She also clerked for the Hon. A. Wallace Tashima both at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Central District of California, and while in law school she externed for California Supreme Court Justice Joyce Kennard (Ret.). Lauren is a proud graduate of Northwestern University and she received her JD magna cum laude from Hastings College of the Law. Before entering law school, Lauren worked for the Chicago Chapter of the National Organization for Women, on a project to understand the impact of the terms “rape” and “sexual assault” on victims and jurors.
