Bio

Lisa came to Stanford in late 2021 with a portfolio in several different arenas: daily journalism, non-profit organizations, state government and university center work. The unifying thread has been public service.

Before Stanford, she was a senior field representative in the 13th Senate District of the California Legislature, acting as a liaison with the district’s nearly one million constituents in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties for seven years. She had been an editor and a columnist for the San Jose Mercury News and later for the digital news sites, Los Altos Patch and Cupertino Patch. She specialized in several topic areas for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Hartford Courant in Connecticut. Additionally, she was Innovative Programs Director for the Center for the Integration and Improvement of Journalism at San Francisco State University.

Lisa also has a background in non-profit administration, serving as executive director for the national Asian American Journalists Association. In that capacity she helped run the inaugural convention of UNITY, Journalists of Color, which brought together, for the Asian American Journalists Association, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Native American Journalists Association.

Lisa continues to work to strengthen local and national journalism, particularly in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion. She is a board member of the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a judge on the chapter's annual Excellence in Journalism Awards and a member of the Journalism & Women Symposium, serving on its DEI committee.

Current Role at Stanford

Lisa Chung is lead story-teller for the Office of Community Engagement and one of its key ambassadors in the community. As Director for Engagement Communications, she delves into Stanford’s work in the surrounding communities to chronicle the many -- and often little known -- ways that people are collaborating to work on solutions to our pressing problems. In addition, she helps connect community members with Stanford to further our university’s mission of service to benefit the region, nation and world.
