Marinka Zitnik's main research area is statistical modeling and analysis of large-scale multimodal data. It has become increasingly common to observe and measure technological, biological, and information systems at different levels of granularity and from different perspectives. Zitnik has developed new machine learning and statistical methods to better understand the organization, structure and dynamics of such complex data systems.

Zitnik's work has a wide range of applications of which she focuses on those from biomedicine, health care, genomics, molecular and systems biology. Predictions made by her computational methods have directly contributed to the new discoveries in the wet laboratory experiments.
