Bio


Dr. Terrance Mayes serves as Executive Director and Associate Dean for Strategy Initiatives on the Stanford Medicine Enterprise Strategy Team. He also serves as Executive Director of the Stanford Medicine REACH Initiative (Racial Equity to Advance a Community of Health), and the Associate Director for DEI at the Stanford Cancer Institute. In these roles, Dr. Mayes serves as a key strategy leader for equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts across the Stanford Medicine enterprise.

Dr. Mayes prior engagement in higher education includes such roles as Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion in the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), Associate Dean for the Biosciences Office of Graduate Education and Diversity at Stanford University, and Director for Diversity and Student Life at the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. At UCI, Dr. Mayes served as co-investigator on a provost-funded project focused on bridging the gap between Health Education and the LGBTQIA+ community. He has also led efforts to increase equity and transparency in the faculty recruitment process and was instrumental in establishing LEAD-ABC, a first-in-the nation mission-based program to recruit and retain medical students with an interest in serving the African, Black, and Caribbean communities

During his career, Dr. Mayes has mentored and supported thousands of diverse individuals to pursue education and careers in STEM, healthcare, and academia. He has also delivered hundreds of lectures around the country, making the case that supporting diversity, practicing inclusion, and expecting equity is critical to the future of higher education and our broader society. Also at the national level, Dr. Mayes has advocated for policy innovations at the National Institutes for Health (NIH), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and has served as a member of the American Association for Medical College (AAMC) Steering Committee on Graduate Research, Education, and Training.

Dr. Mayes is a 2019 recipient of the California Diversity Council’s DiversityFirst Award, which recognizes individuals for their leadership, achievement, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. A native of Fresno, CA, Dr. Terrance Mayes holds a BA Degree in Communication from California State University, Fresno, an MS Degree in Organizational Leadership from National University, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of California, San Diego and the California State University, San Marcos.
