Marco Thiele
Adjunct Professor, Energy Science & Engineering
Bio
Marco Thiele has been an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Energy Resources Engineering at Stanford University since 2006. He is also co-founder and President of Streamsim Technologies, which he helped establish in 1997. He received his PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Stanford University in 1994, and his MS and BS degrees in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989 and 1986, respectively.
Dr. Thiele has been a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) since 1985 and was named a Distinguished Member of SPE in 2012. His honors include the 2012 SPE Lester C. Uren Award, the 2010 SPE “A Peer Apart” Award, the 1996 SPE Cedric K. Ferguson Medal, and first place in the 1994 International SPE Student Paper Contest. He also served as an SPE Distinguished Lecturer in 2011–2012.
Dr. Thiele’s research interests focus on the use of reservoir simulation, and streamline-based simulation technology in particular, to address challenges associated with the management and optimization of mature fields undergoing improved and/or enhanced recovery processes (IOR/EOR). He has a particular interest in decision-making under uncertainty in the context of IOR/EOR projects.
Dr. Thiele is also interested in advancing and extending streamline-based flow modeling methodologies to subsurface flow problems beyond their traditional application in reservoir engineering, with particular emphasis on groundwater remediation, aquifer thermal energy storage systems, and enhanced geothermal systems.
In his free time, he is an avid, if admittedly mediocre, road cyclist. He also enjoys hiking, skiing, and traveling to lesser-known destinations.
