Bio

Richard M. Martin is currently Adjunct Professor in the Department of Applied Physics at Stanford University. He is emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he served from 1987 to 2008. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and he received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1969 where his advisor was Morrel H. Cohen. From 1969 to 1971, he was a post-doc at Bell Labs and from 1971 to 1987 was a scientist at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. He is author of two books: "Electronic Structure: Basic Theory and Practical Methods (Cambridge University Press, 2004, 2nd edition 2020.) and "Interacting Electrons: Theory and Computational Approaches" along with coauthors Lucia Reining and David Ceperley (Cambridge University Press, 2016). His avocation since 2008 is the African School for Electronic Structure Methods and Applications (ASESMA), where he was a founder and organizer of schools each other year from 2008 to 2025, and chair of the International Advisory Panel.
