Emily Thompson

Bio

Dr. Emily Fjaellen Thompson is a visual anthropologist working at the intersection of Latin American studies, digital humanities, and collaborative research methods in post-conflict Perú. She earned my PhD in sociocultural anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, and is currently a Tinker Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Latin American Studies at Stanford University.

Through participatory, multi-modal ethnographic fieldwork, Dr Thompson investigates how occult archives and hidden photographs reveal alternative forms of historical testimony. Her work considers visual materials as sites of resistance, survival, and ongoing negotiations of traumatic pasts.

Dr Thompson's research has been supported by the Fulbright Program, Tinker Foundation, and Modern Endangered Archives Program at the UCLA Library with funding from Arcadia. She has published in academic journals and co-authored the first trilingual Quechua-Spanish-English dictionary in the United States. As an award-winning educator and curator, she is committed to collaborative and feminist practices that bridge academic research with community engagement.
