Bio

Alison MacAulay is a Visiting Fellow with the Center for African Studies. She recently completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Historical Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Her research examines film as a form of knowledge production in and about Africa. Her book manuscript, slated for a 2027 release with Indiana University Press, explores film and history in Rwanda from the colonial period to the post-genocide era.

Her current research is focused on how contemporary African and Afro-diasporic filmmakers engage with and create historical archives. The first output of this research was a film series co-curated with Julie MacArthur (University of Toronto), What Remains: Reclaiming Memories, Materialities, and Embodied Histories in African Cinema. This series was co-presented with the Toronto International Film Festival and the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto.
