    BioSarfaraz Alam is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University, where he is modeling nitrate transport in groundwater and surface water to improve approaches to enforcement. His research integrates hydrologic modeling, contaminant transport, remote sensing, and data science to understand how climate and human-induced changes affect water resources and the environment. Sarfaraz earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from UCLA in 2021.

    Sarfaraz received an Outstanding Ph.D. student award, Dissertation Year Fellowship, and Graduate Division Fellowship at UCLA. He authored nine peer-reviewed journal articles and presented his research in over ten international conferences.

    BioMy research combines biogeochemical and molecular techniques to answer questions about how microbes transform nitrogen and carbon in the environment, and how site-specific factors and human impacts may alter these transformation processes. My research at Stanford is focused on how the microbial communities in San Francisco Bay’s benthic sediments process high levels of nitrogen primarily from wastewater sources. Findings from this work will be used to calibrate a nitrogen removal model that may inform management decisions about nitrogen inputs to the bay. Shortly before arriving at Stanford in August 2020, I completed my Ph.D. at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (William & Mary) with a dissertation on the impacts of fertilization on salt marsh carbon accumulation, nitrogen removal, and resilience to sea level rise.

    BioI am a marine scientist trying to understand how environmental conditions drive ecological patterns of fish and fisheries through a physiological lens. The goal is to generate knowledge that can be incorporated into fisheries management frameworks to enhance resource sustainability. I earned my PhD at the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, Rhodes University under the supervision prof. Warren Potts in the SAFER lab, Dr Nikki James and Dr Amanda Bates in the Physiological Diversity Lab at Southampton University. I subsequently did a postdoc with the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity where I helped coordinate multiple research projects across southern Africa. I am currently based at Stanford University, working in Prof. Erik Sperling's Historical Geobiology Lab and Prof. Fio Micheli's lab at Hopkins Marine Station. During this postdoc I will use physiological models to predict climate impacts and identify spatial refugia of key California fishery species including Red Abalone and Purple Urchin.

    BioSahar El Abbadi is a post-doctoral researcher in Energy Resources Engineering. Her research focuses on developing circular economies by transforming waste methane into useful products. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is emitted atmosphere by industrial sources (wastewater treatment plants, landfill, fossil fuel extraction) because it is uneconomical to capture, clean and use. However, methane-consuming bacteria can transform this harmful pollutant into protein-rich cells and biodegradable polymers. Sahar's PhD research evaluated the economic potential of using these bacteria to reduce methane emissions while providing a new source of high-quality protein that can be used as a feed for agriculture and aquaculture. Sahar continues to expand on this work in considering the path to industrialization in both the United States and Bangladesh using methane produced at landfills. Sahar completed her Bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley (2012) in Environmental Engineering Science, and her MS (2015) and PhD (2021) in Civil & Environmental Engineering at Stanford.

  • Paul Furumo

    BioPaul R. Furumo is an interdisciplinary environmental scientist focused on sustainable land use in the tropics. His current research seeks to scale up zero-deforestation commodity production through improved governance solutions at the interface between public and private sectors. His research integrates remotely sensed data, policy analysis, and expert interviews to understand how policymaking influences land use decisions. A major goal is to enhance the temporal and spatial targeting of instruments to unlock policy synergies that advance climate and development targets.

    His past and current research experiences have focused on coupled human-natural systems in Latin America, with a specialization in the Colombian palm oil sector. In Colombia, Paul has pursued his research as a Fulbright fellow and a National Geographic Explorer. His work engages a broad coalition of stakeholders including governments, businesses, civil society, and underrepresented communities. He has brought his science to these stakeholder groups through fieldwork, education and outreach in industry fora, co-development of research, and mentoring of Latin American students.

  • Irene Garousi-Nejad

    BioI am a hydrologist. My research is in the field of hydrology and water resources management at the interface of process-oriented hydrology science and large-scale geospatial data science. I study physical processes involved in the hydrologic cycle, incorporate the understanding of the relationship among its components into parameterizations of the critical processes, and conduct simulations and analyses of hydrologic models to answer critical questions related to the drivers, patterns, and consequences of environmental natural and human-induced changes in hydrologic response through space and time. I am currently a postdoc in Earth System Science at Stanford University, where I am involved in developing hydrological models to identify strategies for the management of both floods and droughts in heavily developed watersheds in India. I received my doctoral degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Utah Water Research Laboratory at Utah State University in 2021, where my research was centered on advancing hydrological modeling to improve flood and water supply forecasting in the western United States basins. I obtained my bachelor's and master's degrees in Agricultural Engineering – Water Resources Engineering from the University of Tehran, Iran. Outside of my office, I enjoy hiking, reading, and painting.

  • Meredith Goebel

    Meredith Goebel

    BioMeredith Goebel primary interests center on the application of geophysical methods for addressing problems surrounding the evaluation and management of groundwater resources. She currently serves as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Stanford University, developing methods for integrating new datasets into groundwater models to improve their accuracy and utility, specifically in California’s Central Valley. In addition to this work, she is also involved in number of projects investigating new tools for groundwater recharge site assessment in the Central Valley.

    Meredith completed her PhD in Geophysics at Stanford University, working with electrical and electromagnetic geophysical methods to map and monitor saltwater intrusion at both the lab and field scale. The field scale research for her PhD was conducted along the coast of the Monterey Bay, mapping the distribution of fresh and salt water in the subsurface both onshore and offshore along the bay. Prior to starting at Stanford she got her BA in Geophysics from UC Berkeley, and interned in the seismology group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

    BioCarlos F. Gould is a 2021-2023 Stanford Earth Postdoctoral Fellow. Carlos is working to understand the drivers of unequal health risks and under what circumstances environmental health interventions and policies can improve health and well-being. His research has combined epidemiology, exposure science, and survey data collection to enhance our understanding of how to reduce household air pollution by promoting the use of clean cooking technologies. Carlos holds a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from Columbia University and a BA in Environmental Studies from Yale University.

    BioDr. Tianyang Guo earned his Ph.D. degree in Rock Mechanics from the Department of Earth Sciences, the University of Hong Kong in 2020 under the Postgraduate Scholarship. He earned his bachelor's and master’s degree from Wuhan University (WHU) in 2013 and 2016, respectively. He was awarded the National Scholarship for Graduate in 2015 and graduated from WHU as an outstanding graduate. Before joining Stanford, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) under PolyU Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme 2021.

    His research interests include (1) Microcracking mechanisms of granite based on acoustic emission (AE) and microscopic observation. (2) Application of machine learning in AE data interpretation. (3) Cracking mechanisms and induced microseismicity in the hydraulic fracturing of rocks.

    BioNATALIE HERBERT is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Behavioral Science in the Department of Earth Systems Science and at the Woods Institute for the Environment. Her research investigates decision-making in the face of environmental risk. She completed her Ph.D. in 2020 at the Annenberg School for Communication, where she researched health and science communication with a focus on communicating scientific uncertainty. In 2020, Natalie was a Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellow at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; she was the Rosenblith Fellow in Policy and Global Affairs and the InterAcademy Partnership.

    BioJ. Sebastian Hernandez-Suarez is a recent PhD graduate in Biosystems Engineering from Michigan State University. He is now a postdoctoral scholar working with Dr. Steven Gorelick in water rights markets modeling in the Upper Colorado River Basin. Originally from Bogota, Colombia, he showed an early interest in humans' relationship with natural resources, especially water. This interest motivated him to obtain a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and then a master's in Water Resources Engineering. Before pursuing his PhD, Sebastian worked for the Colombian government in environmental policy-making related to ecological flows and watershed management. His research interests include numerical modeling, artificial intelligence, and multi-objective optimization to support multicriteria decision-making.

    BioMaomao Hu is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Energy Resources Engineering at Stanford University since November 2021. Prior to joining Stanford, he was a postdoc in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford for two years. He received his PhD degree in Building Environment and Energy Engineering from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2019. In 2018, he studied as a guest PhD student in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the Technical University of Denmark.

    His research interests include data analytics, data-driven modelling, numerical optimization, and model predictive control of the building and urban energy systems for GHG emission reduction, energy efficiency, energy flexibility, and energy resiliency. He has been actively contributing to international collaborations, including the ongoing IEA EBC Annex 81 (Data-Driven Smart Buildings) and Annex 82 (Energy Flexible Buildings Towards Resilient Low Carbon Energy Systems).

Graduated in mining engineering at the UFRGS (2010 - 2016), and Bac +5 from the Ecole des Mines d'Alès, France (2013 - 2014), and Visitor Student at Columbia University, USA (2012). Currently Mr. Kloeckner is a Visiting Research Scholar at Stanford University tutored by Professor Jef Caers, and he is a PhD Candidate at the Mineral & Environmental Technology and Extractive Metallurgy Program with emphasis in Geostatistics at the UFRGS and supervised by Professor João Felipe Coimbra Leite Costa.

    BioI am currently a postdoctoral scholar working with Tapan Mukerji on digital rock physics at Stanford University. My research focuses on geophysics inverse problems, seismic reservoir characterization, history matching, digital rock physics, data assimilation and deep learning. I completed my PhD degree in geophysics from the University of Wyoming in 2021 under the supervision of Dario Grana, and earned the bachelor and master degree from China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) in 2013 and 2016, respectively.

  • Michael Lindley Machala

    Michael Lindley Machala

    BioMichael is a postdoctoral fellow whose interests encompass international development projects requiring productive energy use and how to increase their success through transdisciplinary approaches. He has a dual appointment in the Precourt Institute for Energy and the Department of Energy Resources Engineering. His current work focuses on understanding and reducing produce supply chain inefficiency in India from a systems perspective, while identifying and testing scalable interventions with on-the-ground partners and end-users. Michael completed a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering as an NSF Graduate Research Fellow at Stanford. His thesis focused on using fundamental research to develop design descriptors for improving solar-to-fuel and fuel-to-electricity conversion using electrochemistry.

    Michael’s interest in social and environmental impact work began in high school as the president of the region’s youth-led tobacco free coalition. The coalition was runner-up for National Youth Advocates of the Year given by the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids when Idaho (his home state) went tobacco-free. At Kenyon College, he self-designed a major in Chemical Physics to understand how related disciplines approach challenges in renewable energy technology development while co-captaining the men’s NCAA National Champion swim team.

    After graduating in 2009, Michael moved to Germany as a Transatlantic Renewable Energy Fellow to research low-cost solar cells while learning about the sociopolitical environment that placed Germany as a global leader in renewable energy integration. While there, he attended the UNFCCC COP15 climate summit with two other fellows. Leading up to and during the highly anticipated event, they wrote and published an educational blog for the public. After leaving Germany, Michael lived in Southeast Asia as a Henry Luce Scholar to gain first-hand experience with renewable energy integration in unelectrified regions of Laos and Cambodia. This experience informed his desire to continue work on energy equality and development around the world, particularly at the intersection with basic human needs.

    BioI am interested in how machine learning and Bayesian statistics can assist our understanding of the climate and weather. While at Stanford, I will explore how these tools can improve gravity wave parameterisations in atmospheric models. I recently completed my PhD at the University of Reading, which focused on emulating climate models to estimate the surface temperature response to changes in anthropogenic forcings, including both long-lived greenhouse gases and short-lived aerosol pollutants. This research took a Bayesian perspective to learn relationships between climate change patterns and forcings. Prior to this, I studied dynamical systems and fluid dynamics in my MRes, after coming from an undergraduate degree in Physics at Imperial College London. Outside of work, my interests include dancing, running and cycling.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research at Stanford focuses on the evolution of body size of marine animals throughout the fossil record. Specifically, I am using body size as a predictor for marine animal extinction and origination throughout the last 500 million years. I am also working on body size evolution during intervals of rapid diversification of marine invertebrates during the early Paleozoic.

    My overall research interests broadly focus on stratigraphic paleobiology. In particular, I seek to understand the various environmental and biotic factors driving macroevolutionary patterns of marine invertebrates in the fossil record within a sequence stratigraphic context. I am also interested in the variation and reconciliation of local and regional expressions of global macroevolutionary patterns and perturbations, such as mass extinctions.

    BioRita Esuru Okoroafor is currently a Graduate student at the Energy Resources Engineering Department. She is interested in coupling Geomechanics with Reservoir Engineering of Enhanced Geothemal Systems.

    Prior to the graduate program, she has worked with Schlumberger for over 12 years. Most of her work experience has been on the fields in the Gulf of Guinea. She has held the positions of Borehole Reservoir Engineer, Reservoir and Production Engineering Team Lead, Sales Manager, Reservoir Domain Champion and Real Time Productivity Steering Product Analyst.

    Her technical roles resulted in extensive experience on Formation Testing, Petrophysics, Well Testing, Production Logging, Well Integrity and Single Well Simulation and Production Forecasting, from which she has ten technical papers published, one granted patent and one patent application.
    Her non-technical roles gave her an opportunity to develop skills in leadership, communication, presentation and customer relationship management.

    Since 2005, Rita has been an active volunteer with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), holding leadership and committee member positions, locally, regionally and internationally.
    Her other interest includes writing and she is the author of the fiction novels "Against The Perfect Will" and "Morning Does Come".

    BioGabriele Pozzato received his Bachelor's degree in Information Engineering from Università di Padova and his Master of Science (cum laude) in Automation and Control Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. He was a visiting scholar at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR), South Carolina (USA), from January to November 2016. He received his Ph.D. in Information Technology from the Politecnico di Milano in 2020, defending a thesis on the optimization, modeling, and control of vehicles' powertrain. During his doctoral studies, he was an academic guest at the ETH Zürich and the Leibniz Universität Hannover. After the doctoral degree, he was junior Project Manager at Robert Bosch S.p.A., Sensortec division. He currently holds a post-doc position at the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, Stanford University.

    BioI am a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, working with Marshall Burke as a part of the ECHO (Environmental Change and Human Outcomes) Lab. My research interest is in environmental and energy policies with a global focus on issues involving air pollution, climate change and energy systems. I use causal inference, machine learning, and atmospheric chemistry modeling to study the sustainability challenges at the intersection of energy, pollution and climate using real-world data.

    I received my PhD degree from MIT’s Institute for Data, Systems, and Society on September 2021, advised by Noelle Selin. I also worked closely with my committee members: Valerie Karplus, Cory Zigler and Colette Heald. I received bachelor degrees in environmental sciences and economics from Peking University in Beijing.

    BioMy research primarily addresses the structural and thermal evolution of highly deformed continental crust. I am strongly field-oriented and particularly interested in the relationship between igneous & metamorphic processes and deformation from outcrop to regional scales, the influence of pluton emplacement on fault behavior, tectonic and metamorphic processes driving continental rifting and subduction, and processes that transport metal through the crust to form economic deposits.

    BioI study the role of hydrocarbon fuels in a rapidly decarbonizing economy. I'm a "pick important problems first and figure out the best methods later" kind of researcher, drawing on my expertise in techno-economic assessment, machine learning and applied statistics, econometrics, optimization, and various engineering subdisciplines along the way. My current focus is assessing and demonstrating the value of diverse methane emission sensing and mitigation technologies across the oil and gas value chain in an increasingly data-rich environment.

    BioChenghao is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Jackson Lab in the Department of Earth System Science. As a part of the New Map of Life Initiative, he is also a fellow in the domain of Environment at the Stanford Center on Longevity. He is currently studying the relationship between multi-scale energy consumption and human well-being metrics to reduce the need for global energy infrastructure and increase global equality. Chenghao received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University where he focused on the impacts of green infrastructure (especially urban trees) on urban meteorology and climatology using numerical simulations and remote sensing techniques.

    BioPhilip Womble is an attorney and a hydrologist specializing in water policy and water markets. He is a legal/postdoctoral fellow with the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University. Philip received his Ph.D. in Environment and Resources from Stanford and his J.D. from Stanford Law School, where his research evaluated optimal environmental water rights marketing in the Upper Colorado River Basin, barriers to water marketing in the state of Colorado, and Native American groundwater claims across the western United States. His work has been published in journals such as Science, Water Resources Research, and the Harvard Environmental Law Review. During graduate school, Philip worked for the Special Master in the U.S. Supreme Court interstate water dispute Montana v. Wyoming, The Nature Conservancy's Colorado River Program, and a water law firm. Before graduate school, he worked for the Environmental Law Institute in Washington, DC, where he analyzed the most established market for freshwater ecosystem services in the United States – wetland and stream compensatory mitigation under the Clean Water Act. Philip grew up in North Carolina, where he received his B.S. in Environmental Sciences from UNC-Chapel Hill.

    BioI am an ecosystem ecologist using data-driven approaches to study global environmental changes, including climate change, land use land cover change, and coupled natural and human (CNH) systems. My data comes from both remote sensing observation and field measurements. My current project is studying methane emissions from abandoned oil and gas wells and from home appliances in California.

    BioMeng Zhao is a postdoctoral scholar in Konings' lab. Meng studies the intersection between hydrology and ecology, and their broader implications on climate, society, and policy making. He employs a variety of approaches including satellite remote sensing, GIS, Earth system modeling, and machine learning. Meng holds a Ph.D. in Earth system science from the University of California Irvine.
