Research and Development Scientist and Engineer, Department of Geological Sciences
Current Role at StanfordI manage the Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry Laboratory in the Mitchell Building, part of the Environmental Measurements Facility 2 (EMF2) at Stanford's School of Earth Sciences. The lab houses 8 analyzer systems interfaced with 5 mass spectrometers which are used for high-precision stable isotope measurements of a wide variety of materials from terrestrial as well as marine environments. My role there is to ensure smooth operation of the instrumentation, to closely monitor the quality of the generated data, and to work with students and researchers to optimize existing or develop new methods for both sample preparation and analysis.

Nicole Buckley Biggs
Research Asst - Graduate, Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources
BioNic Buckley Biggs is a social scientist conducting research at the intersection of climate, conservation and agriculture policy. She researches how ecosystem services provided by California rangelands are mediated by different types of landowners, and is interested in questions like: What are the trade-offs in managing landscapes for specific outcomes, like soil carbon sequestration or renewable energy production? What incentives and messages shape the management decisions of ranchers and farmers? Using both qualitative and quantitative data, Nic’s current projects investigate land use change for intensified agriculture and solar development, carbon markets, and the influence of landowners’ perceptions on land management and program participation.
Before graduate school, Nic worked as Campaign Director for the Northern Sierra Partnership project at The Nature Conservancy and previously as Assistant Director of the Aspen Institute’s Energy & Environment Program.
Areas of expertise: Agriculture & conservation policy, nature based solutions, climate-smart land planning, land use / land cover change, human dimensions of land use management, ranching communities, large landscape conservation, payments for ecosystem services, social-ecological systems -

Guadalupe Carrillo
Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences
BioAs Director of Stanford Earth's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion initiatives, Dr. Carrillo directs and oversees the SURGE program for visiting undergraduate scholars, works with faculty on improving graduate-school admissions practices, and builds partnerships with universities and institutions across the world. She holds a PhD in English from Stanford University and a B.A. in English and Political Science from UC Berkeley. In addition to advancing the School's diversity goals, she also teaches literature courses on occasion. Last year she served as a lecturer for Stanford's CCSRE program, teaching a course on Contemporary U.S. Chicano and Latino Literature.
