Sally Gressens
Assistant Dean, School of Engineering - Student Affairs
Current Role at StanfordAssistant Dean, Graduate Students
Stanford Engineering Office of Student Affairs
My focus: the 4200 graduate students and postdocs in Stanford's Engineering programs, and the policy and procedures that affect them. (A substantial component is financial policy and procedure.)
Secondary focus: the systems supporting their academic progress and financial support, including data & analysis.
In our School, graduate students and postdocs usually work directly with their department's Student Services Managers and staff, and with faculty advisors. The Dean's office does not play so visible or direct a role.
I am more than happy to talk with students, postdocs, and faculty. Most of my work, however, is "behind the scenes" with our departments and with my colleagues in the Schools and central offices (Financial Aid, VPGE, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, etc). -
Michele Carol Grissum
Undergraduate, School of Engineering
BioUpon acceptance at Stanford, Michele was awarded a full scholarship from the InterNorth Corporation in Omaha, NE. A company specializing in natural gas, plastics, coal and petroleum exploration and production. To maintain her scholarship, Michele worked as an intern each summer until graduation from Stanford. The curriculum at Stanford, which includes coursework in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science and petroleum engineering was invaluable and served to aid in her success as an intern at InterNorth, as demonstrated by being a contributing author to a paper presented at the American Chemical Society Convention in St. Louis (April 1984) entitled “Catalytic Upgrading of Propane and Propylene into Higher Hydrocarbons over Acidic Catalysts”. The acquired knowledge from Stanford has also contributed to success while being employed at Stanford Research Institute where her main obligations were to perform mutagenicity testing as well as prepare media for this testing and other experiments.
She's had a busy and fruitful life since matriculating at Stanford. To begin with, Michele married a fellow Stanford classmate – Darrell W. Grissum, B.A. degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Organizational Behavior in 1985. Darrell now serves as the Senior Pastor of the Lily of the Valley Church of God in Christ and L D Bowen District Superintendent of the AZ Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ. They reside in Parker, AZ which is in the midst of the Colorado River Indian Reservation. They have, to their credit, eleven offspring (8 boys and 3 girls). Darrell & Michele served as the primary educators of their children in initially establishing the Small Beginnings Christian Academy homeschool. In establishing SBCA, the coursework taken at Stanford was utilized to design the curriculum. Specifically, the general education requirements as well as the coursework pertaining to their majors served as a foundation to prepare the children for success in their higher learning pursuits. Michele's Stanford background was utilized to design projects/experiments and real life examples to convey educational concepts, techniques and principles. They were utilizing the STEM approach before it became popular. To date, all 11 children have obtained their high school credentials (at the age of 16) and many have obtained college and graduate degrees and are now working in their field of study. The others are college students.
In addition to homeschooling their children, Michele assists Darrell in ministry, which includes church financial officer (bookkeeper/accountant, trustee board member), assisting in the publication and distribution of the church’s newsletter, children’s ministry leader (utilizing knowledge of applied science to illustrate biblical principles), Women’s Bible study leader, public speaker and workshop leader. In each of these areas, the knowledge that has been acquired from her coursework at Stanford was utilized to convey, demonstrate and illustrate Biblical concepts as well as aid congregants in obtaining a better quality of life – whether it be concerning the water in the area, pesticides, food additives, substance abuse or education on how dialysis works, etc. In 2018, the Small Beginnings Christian Academy Private School was established. Michele served as Executive Director & Administrator. At SBCA, she was a major contributor in the utilization of science and technology to implement educational concepts. SBCA is now a virtual academy under the administration of her daughter.
Michele has traveled extensively, for ministry obligations and to enhance the children’s homeschool education experience. She has been involved in the community as a member of the La Paz Regional Hospital Advisory Board, the Colorado River Crisis Shelter Board and helped to establish the Colorado River Chapter of the NAACP. -
