Yahui He
Postdoctoral Scholar, Archaeology
BioYahui He is an environmental archaeologist specializing in archaeobotany in East Asia. Her research investigates the dynamics of human-plant relationships in multi-scalar socio-political contexts, focusing on the materiality of plants in processes of sedentism and urbanism.
Her PhD and ongoing research work in the Northern Zone, China (northern Loess Plateau and southern Mongolian Plateau) utilizes multi-proxy methods, including starch, phytolith, fungi, and use-wear analyses, to explore plant-based food and drink practices across different social contexts, such as household, community, and mortuary settings. Yahui’s collaborative research extends to studies on plant exploitation and dispersal, as well as related technologies such as plant food fermentation and bast fiber production across mainland China and beyond, including Erlitou in Henan and others in Taiwan and Honduras.
Prior to joining the Stanford Archaeology Center as a postdoctoral scholar, Yahui obtained her PhD at Stanford in 2024 and was a Li Foundation Fellow at the Needham Research Institute in Cambridge, UK in 2024 (Jan.-June). -

I am currently starting a new community-driven project about the history of institutions for people with disabilities in Massachusetts.

Derek Holliday
Postdoctoral Scholar, Political Science
BioDerek Holliday is a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Polarization Research Lab, a cross-university lab between Stanford, Dartmouth, and UPenn researching affective polarization, social trust, and political violence. His work with the lab has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on political representation, opinion, and behavior, especially in state and local politics. His methodological interests include survey experiments, text-as-data, and applications of machine learning in social science.
Derek received his PhD in Political Science in 2023 from UCLA, where he jointly obtained an MS in Statistics. At UCLA, he was the project coordinator for Nationscape, a U.S. election survey that interviewed almost half a million respondents through the 2020 Presidential campaign. Additionally, he worked as a research analyst for the UCLA COVID-19 Health and Politics Project, a collaboration between social scientists and doctors measuring people’s pandemic experiences and attitudes. Work from the project has been featured in the New York Times and published in Vaccine. -

Wanheng Hu

BioWanheng Hu is an Embedded Ethics Fellow at Stanford University, jointly appointed by the McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society, the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), and the Computer Science Department.
His research lies at the intersection of social studies of science, medicine, and technology; critical data/algorithm studies; media studies; and public engagement with science. His current book project ethnographically examines the cultivation of credible machine learning models in complex expert practices, with an empirical focus on image-based diagnostics within the Chinese medical AI industry. Another line of his work focuses on the democratic engagement of ordinary citizens in technoscientific affairs, particularly concerning AI development.
Wanheng received his Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies from Cornell University, where he also completed a minor in Media Studies and remains an active member of the Artificial Intelligence, Policy, and Practice (AIPP) initiative. He is currently an affiliate at the Data & Society Research Institute.
