    BioI am a quantitative ecologist as my interests lie in linking ecological theory to data across a variety of topics in ecology using rigorous statistical techniques, computer simulations, mathematical models, and (occasionally) my own experiments. In my postdoc I will be working to advance our understanding of how changing land-use affects the spread of Malaria in Peru and Dengue in Costa Rica. My PhD was composed of two primary topics: (1) Understanding the spread of West Nile virus in diverse communities of birds in North America, which included understanding the impact of individual bird species, species richness, and spatial variables such as human population density and habitat type on the spread of WNV; (2) Examining the role of co-infection of micro and macro parasites on the evolution of virulence of the myxoma virus in European rabbits. My previous work has included experiments on individual variation in anti-predator behavior of snails (Physa) to crayfish (Procambarus) and forest ecology. On the side I am interested in improving the use of statistics in the biological sciences.

    Apart from my research I spend my time birding, hiking, playing both Go and Magic the Gathering, and listening to metal.

  • Omer Karaduman

    Omer Karaduman

    BioPrior to coming to Stanford, Omer completed his Ph.D. in Economics at MIT in 2020, and got his bachelor's degree in Economics from Bilkent University in 2014.

    His research focuses on the transition of the energy sector towards a decarbonized and sustainable future. In his research, he utilizes large datasets by using game-theoretical modeling to have practical policy suggestions.

    Omer's Ph.D. research focused on the transition to a low carbon electricity system at the wholesale level. His thesis developed a framework that allows us to estimate the impact of large-scale battery and renewable investment in an imperfectly competitive electricity market. He worked on the social and private benefits of grid-scale energy storage and the need for policies that complement investments in renewables with encouraging energy storage and investigated the impact of large-scale renewable investment in the wholesale electricity market in terms of price and emissions.

    He is currently working on using large-scale energy storage as a transmission asset, the impact of large EV uptake on the wholesale electricity market, and carbon pricing in the electricity industry.

    BioWelcome to my page! I am an Interdisciplinary Ethics Fellow. I am based between the Center for Ethics in Society and the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. My work is about the ethics of robotics and data-driven technologies. I completed a PhD in May 2020 at the University of Bristol on the ethics of automated vehicle decision making. My supervisors were Richard Pettigrew and Brad Hooker. I previously worked as a Research Assistant at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge, looking at how tools from the philosophy of science might inform disputes about explainable machine learning in medicine.
