Timothy Kelly, MD, MPH

BioDr. Timothy Kelly, MD, MPH, is a fellowship-trained pain medicine specialist and board-certified emergency medicine doctor at Stanford Health Care. He is a clinical instructor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Kelly provides pain management care and treats pain conditions such as chronic neck, back, knee, and shoulder pain.
Dr. Kelly’s research focuses on the intersection of pain management and emergency medicine. He has studied treatments like peripheral nerve stimulation (using small electrical devices to reduce chronic pain) and targeted drug delivery. Dr. Kelly is interested in bridging the gap between emergency medicine and pain medicine.
Dr. Kelly’s research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Annals of Internal Medicine, Clinical Toxicology, American Journal of Emergency Medicine, and Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training, among others.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy laboratory tries to find out how pharmacologic agents used in the practice of anesthesia (general anesthetic and analgesic agents) lead to therapeutically desireable endpoints including unconsciousness, immobility and absence of pain. The old idea that general anesthetics are uniformly non-specific "membrane stabilizers" is giving way to a new realization that these agents exert specific actions on particular ion channels and intracellular signalling systems.
