Sophia Adelson

BioSophia Adelson is a Research Genetic Counselor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetics at Stanford University. Her work focuses on advancing reproductive genetics and improving maternal and childhood health outcomes through clinical research and thoughtful implementation of genomic technologies. Sophia’s interest in reproductive health began during her undergraduate studies at Wellesley College, a historically women’s college that shaped her strong commitment to maternal health and reproductive justice. This foundation continues to guide her work, which centers on advancing equitable, evidence-based care for pregnant individuals, newborns, and children.
At Stanford, Sophia works closely with Dr. Christina Tise on several research initiatives at the intersection of reproductive and pediatric genetics. She contributes to the BabySeq Project, a study using genome sequencing to identify actionable genetic risks in newborns, where she coordinates IRB submissions, pediatrician engagement, family recruitment and consent, and the return of results. Sophia also plays an active role in the TRIOS Study, which investigates the genetic causes of recurrent pregnancy loss. Her work explores participants’ experiences receiving genomic results and aims to improve counseling practices and outcomes for families navigating reproductive challenges. In addition, Sophia contributes to the GREGoR Consortium (Genomics Research to Elucidate the Genetics of Rare diseases), supporting efforts to identify novel disease genes and improve diagnostic yield for individuals with rare, undiagnosed conditions.
Sophia’s research and clinical interests include reproductive and prenatal genetics, rare disease genomics, bioethics, and equitable implementation of genomic medicine. She is passionate about proactive healthcare and advocating for effective health risk communication within families, with the goal of improving understanding, decision-making, and health outcomes across diverse populations.

Parth Arora

BioParth is joining the School of Medicine as a Life Science Research Professional for the Department of Pediatrics. As a part of Dr. Christin Kuo’s Lab, Parth is driven to support the team’s mission and actively contribute to the intellectual environment of the lab. He recently graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago with a B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology. During his time at UIC, he has been a part of several research projects where he collaborated with Dr. Rhonda D. Kineman to design a research project to investigate variations in hepatic gene expression throughout the phases of the estrus cycle and study the impact of sexual dimorphism in the progression of the nonalcoholic fatty liver. He believes this position would be an excellent opportunity for him to apply his skills while engaging in multidisciplinary projects that would make a real-life impact. He is thrilled to receive this opportunity and looks forward to being a part of the Stanford Community.

Shalmali Bane
Research Assistant, Pediatrics - Neonatology
BioShalmali Bane is doctoral student in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health. She is a trainee with the Center for Population Health Sciences, in the Stanford School of Medicine. She works with Dr. Suzan Carmichael on examining social determinants of reproductive health and perinatal outcomes. Shalmali grew up in India and received a biology degree from Stanford, with a focus in Neurobiology. Prior to graduate school, she was a healthcare consultant with the Analysis Group, where she focused on survey research, literature reviews, and budget impact modelling. She is passionate about equity and inclusion initiatives and serves on her departmental JEDI committee. She hopes to meld all of these experiences together in her current work: applying rigorous epidemiological methods to study how factors like socially determined race/ethnicity and socio-economic position impact the experiences of birthing persons.
