Mark A. Cappelli
Professor of Mechanical Engineering
BioProfessor Cappelli received his B.Sc. degree in Physics (McGill, 1980), and M.A.Sc and Ph.D. degrees in Aerospace Sciences (Toronto, 1983, 1987). He joined Stanford University in 1987 and is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Co-Director of the Engineering Physics Program. He carries out research in applied plasma physics with applications to a broad range of fields, including space propulsion, aerodynamics, medicine, materials synthesis, and fusion.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are committed to promoting an understanding of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, and ensuring that all patients who are suffering from cerebrospinal fluid leaks receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment of this devastating, chronic, and fixable condition. We believe this can be best accomplished in a multidisciplinary setting involving expertise in radiology, neurology, and interventional pain medicine.

Jennifer Caswell-Jin

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research is on the translational application of next-generation sequencing technologies to breast cancer care: (1) the value of hereditary cancer genetic panel testing in clinical practice, (2) the mechanisms by which inherited genetic variants lead to breast cancer development, and (3) the analysis of somatic tumor sequencing data to inform understanding of breast tumorigenesis, metastasis, and development of resistance in response to therapeutics.

Alma-Martina Cepika
Assistant Professor of Surgery (General Surgery)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsCepika Lab studies human immune tolerance. Using cellular immunology, genomics, and gene engineering, we aim to understand: 1) the role of human thymic regulatory T cells (Tregs) and inducible type 1 regulatory T (Tr1) cells in resistance to anti-tumor immunity and cancer immunotherapy, and 2) the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity in the pathogenesis of human inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our overarching goal is to leverage our discoveries for improving patient outcomes.

Emily Chan
Associate Professor of Pathology (Clinical Pathology)
BioDr. Chan is an Associate Professor of Pathology at Stanford University. She completed her MD, PhD at New York University and Anatomic Pathology residency with subspecialty Genitourinary Pathology training at University of California-San Francisco (UCSF). She is AP board-certified. Dr. Chan was a GU attending at UCSF for five years before joining Stanford to lead the Genitourinary Pathology Service and Fellowship. She has successfully mentored numerous trainees in projects, publications, and career planning. Dr. Chan has co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed research publications and has a particular interest in integrating molecular testing in diagnostic pathology, as well as recognition of prostate cancer architectural patterns than can help with prognosis and treatment decision making.

We have pioneered methods to predict, dissect, and control large-scale gene regulatory programs; these methods have provided insights into human development, cancer, and aging.

Greg Charville, MD, PhD
Associate Professor of Pathology
BioDr. Charville has a special interest in the diagnosis of rare tumors that derive from bone and soft tissues, including muscle, fat, blood vessels, cartilage, and other connective tissues. He also specializes in the classification and study of diseases related to the gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary systems.
Dr. Charville particularly enjoys working alongside Stanford's excellent physicians-in-training to classify the most diagnostically challenging cases in collaboration with pathologists from around the world, bringing to bear cutting-edge techniques for comprehensive histologic and molecular characterization in each case. This experience serves as the inspiration for laboratory-based investigation of the molecular underpinnings of human disease, focusing on genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of neoplasia and the translation of these mechanistic insights into novel diagnostic and predictive biomarkers. -
James K. Chen
Jauch Professor and Professor of Chemical and Systems Biology, of Developmental Biology and of Chemistry
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur laboratory combines chemistry and developmental biology to investigate the molecular events that regulate embryonic patterning, tissue regeneration, and tumorigenesis. We are currently using genetic and small-molecule approaches to study the molecular mechanisms of Hedgehog signaling, and we are developing chemical technologies to perturb and observe the genetic programs that underlie vertebrate development.

Michelle M. Chen, MD, MHS, FACS
Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery (OHNS)
BioDr. Chen is a fellowship-trained head and neck surgical oncologist with a board certification in otolaryngology and an assistant professor with the Stanford School of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology.
Her practice focuses on the treatment of cancers that affect the head and neck. She has received additional training in microvascular reconstruction and transoral robotic surgery.
Dr. Chen has an active lab involved in head and neck cancer health services research and her work has appeared in numerous journals, including The Journal of the American Medical Association, Cancer, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and Journal of Clinical Oncology. She has also authored chapters in textbooks on head and neck cancer treatment.
Dr. Chen is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery (AAOHNS) and the American Head & Neck Society. -
Yiyun Chen
Postdoctoral Scholar, Stanford Cancer Institute
BioYiyun Chen, Ph.D. is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Professor Crystal Mackall’s group at Stanford Cancer Institute.
Dr. Chen studied biochemistry and structural biology in her undergraduate and master trainings at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where she eventually obtained her Ph.D. degree in computational biology under the supervision of Professor Jiguang Wang. During her Ph.D. training, she has developed her skill sets in analyzing and integrating various types of patient-derived sequencing data, published three first-author and four co-author papers, and received two awards for top postgraduate students. Through interdisciplinary collaborations with cancer biologist and clinicians in US and Asia, her work has uncovered tumor-specific immune cell subtypes and novel noncoding RNAs and generated new insights into precision medicine in glioma, lymphoma and gastric cancer.
Applying her expertise in computational cancer biology and immunology, her current research is focused on identifying molecular mechanisms that contribute to the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing CAR-T immunotherapy. At Mackall Lab, she will contribute to tailoring computational pipelines for profiling the spatiotemporal dynamics of the tumor and immune microenvironment and translate new discoveries into cancer therapeutics. -

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsActive Wnt signaling maintains somatic stem cells in many organ systems. Using Wnt target genes as markers, we have characterized distinct cell populations with stem cell behavior in the inner ear, an organ thought to be terminally differentiated. Ongoing work focuses on delineating the developing significance of these putative stem/progenitor cells and their behavior after damage.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMy research direction involves the evalutation of single-stranded library prepartion methods versus conventional double-stranded methods of cell-free DNA for non-invasive cancer profiling applications. The exploration of these technologies allow for the inference of the genomic and epigenetic features of both local and distant cell types associated with a biofluid.

Ramsey Cheung
Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology and Hepatology)
Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Cheung's research interests focus on liver diseases, with emphasis on viral hepatitis. His past research include investigating the mechanism of viral neutralization of hepatitis B virus at the molecular level and immune response to hepatitis C virus. Dr. Cheung is studing various aspects of hepatitis C, both clinical and translational research.
