Joel Fundaun
Postdoctoral Scholar, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine
BioDr. Joel Fundaun is a clinician-scientist specializing in neuropathic pain following traumatic cervical spine injuries. His research focuses on uncovering the biological mechanisms underlying chronic pain and developing tools to stratify pain risk after trauma, such as whiplash and spinal cord injury. He integrates structural neuroimaging with biological samples to investigate why some individuals develop persistent pain while others recover.
Dr. Fundaun earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Regis University, completed an Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency at Northwestern University–Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, and received his PhD in Clinical Neurosciences from the University of Oxford.
He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Stanford University, where he conducts translational research in pain neuroscience and provides care for patients with complex chronic pain at the Stanford Pain Management Center. His ultimate goal is to translate mechanistic insights into tools that can improve early diagnosis and personalize treatment strategies.
