Nidhi Rohatgi, MD MS
Clinical Professor, Medicine
Clinical Professor (By courtesy), Neurosurgery
Clinical Professor (By courtesy), Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain MedicineBioNidhi Rohatgi, MD, MS, SFHM, is a Clinical Professor of Medicine and (by courtesy) Neurosurgery and Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is Affiliate Faculty at Stanford's Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Imaging (AIMI), Institute for Human-Center AI (HAI), and Center for Digital Health.
Dr. Rohatgi's work focuses on what makes clinical interventions, and increasingly AI, succeed or fail in real-world care. She has written on LLMs for clinical text summarization and pharmacogenomics, multimodal in-context learning (NeurIPS 2025), the promises and limitations of AI, and digital twins for surgical site infections (IISE/ANNSIM 2026). Her current interests include real-world evaluation and implementation of AI across the care continuum, and identifying where AI can improve outcomes and reduce cost. She collaborates with clinicians, engineers, health systems, and industry partners on translating AI into safe, effective clinical practice. She delivered the keynote on Engineering AI for Real Clinical Impact at the 2026 IEEE International Conference on Sustainability, Innovation, and Technology. In her upcoming book, she shares a blueprint for AI in medicine: where AI can help and how, global health AI trends, and tackling costs.
Her perspective is grounded in more than a decade of leading and scaling clinical programs at Stanford. For over 10 years, she has led Clinical Advice Services in Patient Experience as Medical Director, developing evidence- and consensus-based clinical decision support for clinical triage across 30+ medical and surgical subspecialties and 200+ clinics (~1 million calls/year). Under her leadership, this award-winning service has built a strong track record in patient safety, reduced unnecessary ED and clinic visits, and reduced pages to on-call teams by over 90%. She also served as Chief of Surgical Co-management for Neurosurgery, ENT, and Orthopedic Surgery, Co-Director of Clinical Research in Hospital Medicine, and Physician Lead of Stanford Health Care's Readmissions Committee.
Dr. Rohatgi has authored peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals (NEJM, Lancet, JAMA, Nature, Annals of Surgery) and book chapters in Perioperative Medicine, and has served as principal investigator and co-investigator for NIH and industry-sponsored trials. She is Editor-in-Chief of JMIR Perioperative Medicine and serves on the Editorial Board of Brown University's Journal of Hospital Medicine. A global advisor on surgical co-management models, she chaired the Society of Hospital Medicine's Global Technical Advisory Committee on co-management and has served on multiple national committees in research, quality and patient safety, perioperative medicine, and practice management. Recognized as a Top Hospitalist by the American College of Physicians, she has received numerous national and international awards for clinical care, quality improvement, teaching, and research, and has been an invited faculty and keynote speaker at regional, national, and international meetings.
Her unique lens spans clinical experience managing patients in medical and surgical specialties, research on millions of patient records, clinical trials, patient experience, clinical triage, and health system operations. Dr. Rohatgi is passionate about innovative, value-based, sustainable solutions and exploring new frontiers in healthcare. -

Current Research and Scholarly Intereststhe overall goal of my laboratory is to uncover new regulatory mechanisms in signaling systems, to understand how these mechanisms are damaged in disease states, and to devise new strategies to repair their function.
