Christopher N. Ta, MD
Professor of Ophthalmology
BioChristopher N. Ta, MD specializes in the diagnosis and medical treatment of cornea diseases. His areas of expertise are in the treatment of ocular infections, inflammation, and ocular surface diseases. He has conducted numerous clinical trials toward the prevention and treatment of ocular infections. Dr. Ta also has extensive clinical experience in the treatment of ocular graft-versus host disease following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Geoffrey Craig Tabin, MD
Fairweather Foundation Professor
BioDr. Geoff Tabin is Co-Founder and Chairman of the Himalayan Cataract Project and a Professor of Ophthalmology and Global Medicine at Stanford University. He has published more than 45 peer-reviewed articles, two books and a dozen book chapters related to his work in ophthalmology and the developing world.
Dr. Tabin is the fourth person in the world to reach the tallest peak on each of the seven continents. His passion for mountain climbing directed him to his professional career in eye care. After summiting Mt. Everest, on one of his expeditions, he came across a Dutch team performing cataract surgery on a woman who had been needlessly blind for three years. It was then he understood his life calling.
Tabin graduated from Yale University and then earned an MA in Philosophy at Oxford University on a Marshall Scholarship. From there, he took his interest in moral philosophy and health care delivery to Harvard Medical School where he earned his MD in 1985. After completing an ophthalmology residency at Brown University and a fellowship in corneal surgery in Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Tabin returned to Nepal to work with Dr. Sanduk Ruit.
Tabin and Nepalese eye surgeon Dr. Sanduk Ruit established the Himalayan Cataract Project in 1995 – with a vow to work to eliminate all preventable and treatable blindness from the Himalayan region in their lifetime, a goal, in Tabin’s words, “more audacious than setting out to make the first assent of the East Face of Mount Everest.” Dr. Ruit, whom the Associated Press heralded as the “god of sight” to the world’s poor, and Tabin have proven that hospital quality standards can be applied in impoverished areas devoid of electricity and clean water. Their successful approach to restoring sight and dogged perseverance has made possible what 20 years ago seemed impossible.
The Himalayan Cataract Project has since expanded beyond the Himalayas to encompass Sub-Saharan Africa as well. Dr.Tabin spends a considerable part of the year working abroad throughout the Himalayas and Sub-Saharan Africa. At Stanford his practice focus encompasses surgery and treatment of diseases of the anterior and external eye including cataract and corneal surgery. -
Imran Thobani
Postdoctoral Scholar, Ophthalmology
BioDr. Imran Thobani is a postdoctoral scholar in Ophthalmology co-advised by Dan Yamins and Andreas Tolias as part of the Enigma project. He is interested in building large-scale predictive models of the brain that he thinks will be useful for both scientific insights and downstream biomedical applications. He did his PhD at Stanford, where he was trained in both philosophy of neuroscience and computational neuroscience, applying this training to develop better methods for comparing artificial neural network models to the brain.

Daniel SW Ting
Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor, Ophthalmology
BioDaniel Ting, MD, PhD, Stanford Adjunct Associate Professor and Duke-NUS Jong Soy Leong Professor, is one of the world's leading clinician-AI scientists, vitreoretinal surgeons, technology innovators and entrepreneurs, with expertise spanning retinal medicine and surgery, AI and healthcare technology. His work sits at the intersection of medicine, AI, innovation and technology translation. A former US-ASEAN Fulbright Scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and School of Medicine, his research spans machine learning, deep learning, large language models, multimodal foundation models, explainable AI and privacy-preserving technologies, alongside safe, responsible and ethical clinical AI. He has contributed to international consensus and reporting initiatives including STARD-AI, QUADAS-AI and DECIDE-AI.
Professor Ting works across the full translational spectrum of AI in healthcare, from algorithm development and multimodal foundation models to generative and agentic AI, clinical implementation, regulatory science, health economics and commercialization. He is Founding Co-Director of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Institute (AIMI), Director of the SingHealth AI Office, Chief Data & Digital Officer of the Singapore National Eye Centre, and Head of AI & Digital Innovation at the Singapore Eye Research Institute. He serves on Singapore's Ministry of Health AI Steering Committee and is a core leader of SIMFONI, Singapore's national programme for sovereign multimodal foundation models in healthcare.
His research has advanced the development, validation and real-world deployment of medical AI, including national-scale AI-enabled diabetic retinopathy screening, health-economic evaluation, privacy-preserving AI, medical imaging foundation models and responsible generative AI. More recently, his work has expanded into sovereign agentic AI and enterprise AI orchestration, combining frontier models, specialised agents, institutional knowledge, verification and structured human oversight for regulated environments.
Professor Ting has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications, attracting more than 45,000 citations with an H-index above 86, including influential work in JAMA, The Lancet, Nature Medicine, Nature Biomedical Engineering, The Lancet Digital Health and NEJM AI. He was recognised in the World's Top 100 AI Power List (2024) alongside AI leaders including Jensen Huang, Fei-Fei Li and Yann LeCun. He has been named among Stanford University's World's Top 2% Scientists (2022–2026), the Top 100 Power List in Ophthalmology, and the World's Top 10 Ophthalmic Innovators (2025). Major honours include Singapore's Young Scientist Award, National Clinician Scientist Award, APAO Nakajima Award, APVRS Ian Constable Award, ARVO Bert Glaser Award and Macula Society Evangelos Gragoudas Award.
Professor Ting serves on the International Advisory Board of The Lancet Digital Health, is Section Editor for AI at the British Journal of Ophthalmology, and holds editorial leadership roles with Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology Retina and Ophthalmology Science. He also holds international leadership positions across the American Academy of Ophthalmology and major Asia-Pacific ophthalmology and vitreoretinal societies.
Beyond academia, Professor Ting is a serial inventor, start-up founder and technology entrepreneur, co-founding ventures spanning medical AI, ophthalmology, healthy longevity and sovereign agentic AI. His work bridges Stanford and Silicon Valley's frontier AI and innovation ecosystem with Singapore's integrated healthcare and national AI infrastructure, translating frontier AI into trusted and scalable technologies. His mission is to build the next generation of trusted, sovereign and clinically intelligent AI systems, moving healthcare AI from algorithms to infrastructure, from prediction to reasoning, and from scientific discovery to global-scale impact. -
Andreas Tolias
Professor of Ophthalmology
BioAndreas Tolias is a faculty member at Stanford University, where he co-leads the Enigma Project. His research lies at the interface of neuroscience and AI, combining large-scale neuroscience experiments with machine learning to uncover the principles of natural intelligence. By focusing on perceptual inference and decision-making, his lab integrates systems and computational neuroscience with AI to decipher the network-level principles of intelligence. Dr. Tolias’s work aims to reverse-engineer these principles to create AI systems that are smarter, more robust, trustworthy, and efficient, while providing a powerful platform to test brain algorithms under complex natural tasks. He earned his B.A. and M.A. in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, a Ph.D. in Systems and Computational Neuroscience from MIT, and completed postdoctoral training in Neuroscience and Machine Learning at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen.
