Current Research and Scholarly InterestsI currently explore the application of vibrational spectroscopic technologies for biomedical imaging and precision medicine for clinical use. My research interests are directly related to chemical imaging technology development, which include but are not limited to spectral and image processing and analysis, machine learning applications, autonomous adaptive data acquisition, and vibrational spectroscopic applications to the biomedical sciences.

Randall Holmes

BioAfter completing service in the U.S. Army, Dr. Holmes earned his BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering, MS in Earth System Science, and PhD from Stanford's Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER) focused on sustainable groundwater management in California. As an E-IPER MS Lecturer, Dr. Holmes co-designs and delivers curriculum that bridges theory with practical applications exemplified by the E-IPER MS Capstone Seminar. He creates collaborative learning environments where students develop critical systems-thinking skills through hands-on engagement with complex sustainability challenges. Dr. Holmes' teaching philosophy emphasizes an inclusive, problem-posing education with pedagogical approaches that prepare diverse student populations for both academic success and real-world problem-solving. His interdisciplinary background enables him to connect students with cross-cutting perspectives essential for addressing today's most pressing environmental and resource sustainability issues.

Skylar Holmes

BioDr. Holmes’ research focuses on understanding the mechanisms behind knee osteoarthritis (KOA) development and creating biomechanically-driven, evidence-based interventions to improve mobility. I aim to develop objective methods to characterize pain in KOA, identifying pain profiles linked to worsening symptoms and functional decline. Utilizing functional MRI, mechanical pain sensitivity tests, and imaging of muscles and the knee joint, Dr. Holmes’ work seeks to clarify disease progression and identify biomarkers to enhance clinical care and reduce the burden of KOA. Dr. Holmes earned her PhD in Kinesiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and her MS and BS in Kinesiology from California State University Fullerton.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur lab has been developing tools for the analyses of complex data structures, extending work on multivariate data to structured multitable table that include graphs, networks and trees as well as categorical and continuous measurements.
We created and support the Bioconductor package phyloseq for the analyses of microbial ecology data from the microbiome. We have specialized in developing interactive graphical visualization tools for doing reproducible research in biology. -

In Health Policy, she is a co-director of the Health Services and Policy Research Scholarly Concentration in the School of Medicine and the Administrative Director of the Health Policy MS and PhD programs. In Pediatrics, she is an attending physician at the Gardner Packard Children’s Health Clinic. She is a member of Stanford’s LongSHOT (Longitudinal Study of Handgun Ownership and Transfer) team and performs research about the impact of gun ownership on the risk of death for the gun owner and those who live with them.

His areas of clinical interest include endoscopic head and neck surgery, including robotic thyroidectomy, transoral robotic surgery and transoral laser microsurgery, as well as time-honoured approaches of conservation laryngeal surgery, supracricoid partial laryngectomy. -

I am a PhD candidate in the sociology department at Stanford University. I study gender, family, and workplaces using primarily quantitative and computational methods, though I maintain an interest in qualitative methods. In my dissertation, I study the evolution of our cultural understanding of the relationship between work and family. In a number of collaborative projects, I study gender inequality in the workplace and in the family. -

I have been fortunate to have had Dr. Max Wintermark as a mentor. I have been fortunate to collaborate closely with Dr. Akshay Chaudhari and Dr. Robert Boutin at Stanford.

Since 2012, I have worked on a variety of multi-disciplinary high value care research projects, with a focus on studying interventions related to provider education and EHR-based clinical decision support systems. As technology has progressed, I have examined a spectrum of interventions, ranging from static guideline-based best practice alerts to more advanced AI-based systems. Due to prior research work with code sets and based on my administrative roles, I have a particular interest in researching LLM use for clinical documentation.

Melanie Hom
Clinical Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
BioDr. Melanie Hom is a Clinical Associate Professor and attending psychologist in the Anxiety and Depression Adult Psychological Treatment (ADAPT) Clinic, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Clinic, and Stanford Mental Health for Asians Research and Treatment (SMHART) Clinic. She utilizes evidence-based therapies, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and DBT. Dr. Hom also strives to provide culturally informed psychotherapy in her work with individuals, couples, and families. Her research interests include (1) enhancing help-seeking and treatment engagement among individuals at elevated suicide risk and (2) improving mental health care services for Asians and Asian Americans.

BioBachelor's Degree in piano performance (Manhattan School of Music), Master of Music Degree in performance (RAM/University of London), LRAM (Licentiate, Royal Academy of Music), ARAM (honorary Associate, RAM). Studied with Byron Janis, Herbert Stessin (Juilliard School of Music), Christopher Elton, Hamish Milne, Dominique Merlet (Conservatoire de Genève), other masterclasses or private lessons with Andras Schiff, Alfred Brendel, Christopher Hogwood, Sarah Davis Buechner, Jerome Lowenthal, Piers Lane, amongst others. Champion of the music of British composer John McCabe, she contributed the chapter on his piano works for 'Landscapes of the Mind' published by Ashgate and recorded several CDs of his works including with McCabe, one recognized as 'Editor's Choice' and others consistently receiving five stars from Gramophone Magazine and BBC Music Magazine. She has also recorded other highly rated CDs of works by Chopin, Mozart, Rawsthorne and contemporary composers for SOMM, Dutton and Metier labels. Her recording of the piano quintet version with the Vilnius Quartet was 'CD of the Week' (The Independent, UK). As collaborative pianist, she has performed complete cycles of all Beethoven works for every instrument, played for classes of Maurice Hausson (violin), John Wallace (trumpet) as a student and later performed with Mats Lidstrom, Peter Sheppard-Skaerved at the Warsaw Autumn Festival, and founded the Tate Ensemble which performed at the Aldeburgh Festival and received high praise from the New York Times for their Carnegie Debut. Upon coming to the Bay Area in 2007 she has founded the Cal Arte Ensemble and has continued to perform and solo with many orchestras but also continues to record, supports local opera companies, coaches in vocal and ensemble, adjudicates in competitions in the US and abraod, and offers private lessons (is affiliated with CMTA and Vantage Academy in Hong Kong). She has worked as vocal and ensemble coach at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and was Master Teacher at the Community School of Music & Art in Mountain View. She is most proud of her four children filling the home with their own various musical noises.
