David Preece

BioDavid A. Preece, PhD, is a Clinical Psychologist affiliated with the Stanford Psychophysiology Laboratory. His main research and practice interests are in assessing, conceptualising, and treating emotional disorders. Much of his research focuses on the key role that emotional awareness (alexithymia) and emotion regulation difficulties play in a variety of mental health issues, and how this understanding can be harnessed to improve transdiagnostic treatments.

BioDr. Molleigh Preefer is an Associate Staff Scientist at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL). She initially worked at SSRL as a postdoctoral researcher using X-rays to study batteries through a combination of microscopy, diffraction, and spectroscopy. Her current research focus as associate staff scientist is studying electrochemical systems and synthesis, with a particular interest in enabling operando X-ray experiments when materials are pushed far from equilibrium. In addition to her research interests, she supports the transmission X-ray microscopy beamline (BL6-2) and the battery user program on the diffraction beamlines within the Materials Sciences Division.

Steven Press
Associate Professor of History
BioSteven Press is an Assistant Professor of History and an affiliated member of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, the Center for African Studies, and the Stanford Center for Law and History.
Press' first book, Rogue Empires: Conmen and Contracts in Europe's Scramble for Africa (published Spring 2017 with Harvard University Press), draws on archival work in ten countries and three languages. The book offers a new approach to understanding the European Scramble for Africa by examining one of its pivotal projects: empires run by companies and individual adventurers.
Press' second book, Blood and Diamonds: Germany's Imperial Ambitions in Africa, will appear in April 2021 with Harvard University Press.
In his article in the Journal of Modern History, Press explored the exchanges between Germany, China, and Cuba that led to the USA's lease for Guantanamo Bay in 1903. His article on post-Napoleonic European nationalism appeared in Central European History.
Press received his B.A. from Vanderbilt University and his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. He taught at Harvard and Vanderbilt before coming to Stanford. His research interests include European sovereignty, international relations, and commodity networks. -
Tyler Prestwood

BioTyler Prestwood, M.D., Ph.D. specializes in the treatment of people with psychotic disorders and psychiatric complications with immunologic abnormalities. He is an attending in the INSPIRE Clinic at Stanford, which provides interdisciplinary care for people experiencing psychosis. He also provides care for patients experiencing psychiatric symptoms associated with long-COVID/Post-Acute Coronavirus Syndrome (PACS).
Dr. Prestwood has extensive research experience related to the immune system in various contexts including infectious disease, cancer, and psychiatry. His current work is focused on understanding the influence of infections, the immune response to infections, and metabolism on the subsequent development of psychiatric illnesses, including schizophrenia and PACS. -
Colleen Hallagan Preuninger

BioThe Rev. Dr. Colleen Hallagan Preuninger, an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church, serves as Associate Dean for Religious & Spiritual Life and Director of Student Engagement. Before her arrival at Stanford in 2019, she served as the United Methodist Ecumenical Chaplain at Syracuse University and in the Office of Spiritual Life at Shenandoah University. A gifted preacher and administrator, Rev. Dr. Hallagan Preuninger brings to Stanford ten years of experience working with young adults in both congregational and multifaith settings. She is an enthusiastic spiritual leader who is passionate about cultivating thoughtful environments for the spiritual formation of students. She holds a B.A. in German Language and Literature from Hamilton College, Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in 2021.
Rev. Dr. Hallagan Preuninger released her first book, “Campus Ministry: Empowering Congregations to Support Students on College and University Chaplaincies” in May 2020, and has also contributed prayers and devotions to “We Pray With Her: Encouragement for All Women Who Lead” (2018) and “Speaking Truth: Woman Raising their Voices in Prayer” (2020). -

Argenta Margaret Price
Lecturer
BioArgenta Price is a lecturer and teaching and learning specialist in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. Prior to joining SDSS, she received her PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from UCSF, then pivoted to be a science education researcher in Carl Wieman’s research group at Stanford for 7 years. She led workshops for faculty members and co-taught a Stanford course about the principles of learning and effective teaching practices. Her research focused on defining the process of solving complex problems and developing better ways to measure and teach the decisions that comprise that process. As a lecturer in SDSS, she is working with Drs. Majumdar and Moler to design their new course, “Decision Making for Sustainable Energy,” in which students will learn to make problem-solving decisions in the context of solving sustainable energy problems at personal, local, and national scales. She will also collaborate with any instructors who are interested in incorporating active learning and inclusive teaching practices, trying innovative assessment methods, measuring the effectiveness of their courses, or developing materials for new courses or topics.

BioI am a PhD candidate (ABD) in History of Science at Stanford. I focus on the history and philosophy of biology and the historical sciences, with particular interests in Charles Darwin and in the sciences of complex systems.
Before coming to Stanford, I was a lawyer, serving as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and then representing Silicon Valley technology companies. I left the law for the software business, first as CFO of a publicly-traded software company, next as founding CEO of a software start-up, and finally as Chairman and CEO of a global, publicly-traded internet education company.
I did my undergraduate work at Princeton and got my law degree at Stanford. I also have a Masters of Liberal Arts from Stanford. I am married, have two children and one grandchild and am an avid hiker, skier, and cook. -

Soledad Artiz Prillaman
Assistant Professor of Political Science
BioSoledad Artiz Prillaman is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Stanford University. Her research lies at the intersections of comparative political economy, development, and gender, with a focus in South Asia. Specifically, her research addresses questions such as: What are the political consequences of development and development policies, particularly for women’s political behavior? How are minorities, specifically women, democratically represented and where do inequalities in political engagement persist and how are voter demands translated into policy and governance? In answering these questions, she utilizes mixed methods, including field experiments, surveys, and in-depth qualitative fieldwork. She received her Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University in 2017 and a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Texas A&M University in 2011.

Rosita Primavera
Basic Life Research Scientist, Rad/Pediatric Radiology
BioDr. Rosita Primavera is a Basic Life Research Scientist at Stanford University in the Department of Radiology/Pediatric Radiology. She has a MD in chemistry and pharmaceutical technology and a PhD degree in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnologies. Dr. Primavera has documented experience on the development of nano- and micro-drug delivery systems (DDS) as well as 3D-platforms for the treatment of different diseases. She has trained in developing DDS and 3D-platforms with different materials (synthetic or natural) and employing different techniques (e.g. top/down or bottom/up fabrication). In the last few years, her research interests are focused primarily on diabetes. She has been extensively trained on how to handle and process pancreatic islets from different origins (mouse, rat and human) and she has excellent knowledge and skills to manage and perform in vitro and in vivo experiments involving diabetic animals. She is currently working on the realization of on-commanded system mimicking pancreatic islet function; and both the role of 3D-bioscaffold in pancreatic islet transplantation and the role of the mesenchymal stem cell in the setting of diabetes using novel cellular approaches (i.e. co-transplantation with islets alone or within novel bioscaffolds).

Lance Prince
Philip Sunshine, MD, Professor of Neonatology
BioLawrence (Lance) S. Prince, MD, PhD, is the Division Chief for Neonatal and Developmental Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Prince was previously a Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Neonatology at the University of California, San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego.
Dr. Prince has a long and distinguished career mentoring clinical and scientific trainees and students, many of whom have gone on to establish their own successful careers as academic physician investigators. As a physician scientist, Dr. Prince leads a basic science laboratory focusing on the mechanisms regulating developmental immunology and lung injury and repair. Dr. Prince received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University of Miami, an MD/PhD with a focus in Cell Biology from University of Alabama at Birmingham, and postdoctoral fellowship, Pediatrics residency, and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship training at the University of Iowa. Before arriving in California, Dr. Prince was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Prince’s research interests include the molecular and cellular mechanisms controlling lung development and the maturation of the fetal and neonatal immune systems. He has a particular clinical interest in managing and treating neonatal lung diseases, especially bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in babies born extremely preterm. Dr. Prince’s research team focuses primarily on the development of innate immunity during fetal life as it impacts health and disease in preterm infants. The laboratory is investigating how microbes including Group B streptococcus exploit the unique features of neonatal macrophages to avoid immune detection and cause disease, as well as leading a number of clinical and translational investigations. -
John R. Pringle

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsMuch of our research exploits the power of yeast as an experimentally tractable model eukaryote to investigate fundamental problems in cell and developmental biology such as the mechanisms of cell polarization and cytokinesis. In another project, we are developing the small sea anemone Aiptasia as a model system for study of the molecular and cellular biology of dinoflagellate-cnidarian symbiosis, which is critical for the survival of most corals but still very poorly understood.

Friedrich Prinz

BioFritz Prinz is the Leonardo Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy. He also serves as the Director of the Nanoscale Prototyping Laboratory and Faculty Co-director of the NPL-Affiliate Program. A solid-state physicist by training, Prinz leads a group of doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, and visiting scholars who are addressing fundamental issues on energy conversion and storage at the nanoscale. In his Laboratory, a wide range of nano-fabrication technologies are employed to build prototype fuel cells and capacitors with induced topological electronic states. We are testing these concepts and novel material structures through atomic layer deposition, scanning tunneling microscopy, impedance spectroscopy and other technologies. In addition, the Prinz group group uses atomic scale modeling to gain insights into the nature of charge separation and recombination processes. Before coming to Stanford in 1994, he was on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. Prinz earned a PhD in Physics at the University of Vienna.

Current Research and Scholarly InterestsWe are interested in a broad range of problems at the interface of genomics and evolutionary biology. One current focus of the lab is in understanding how genetic variation impacts gene regulation and complex traits. Marc Pritchard
Director, Research Operations, GSB Research Hub
BioMarc Pritchard is the Director, Research Operations supporting the operational, communications, and financial requirements within the Research Hub. He is a former FA-18 pilot and graduate of the Navy Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun). Over his 21-year career in the United States Navy, he completed five combat tours and served as the Commanding Officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 25.
Following his retirement from the Navy in 2008, Marc returned to the Monterey Peninsula serving in various roles at the Naval Postgraduate School, most recently within the Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Additionally, he serves on the board of the Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association and is the Aid Station Director for the Big Sur International Marathon. -

BioI obtained my PhD from the Biological and Environmental Science Division at King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST, Saudi Arabia) in 2021. I had the opportunity to work with Christian Frøkjær-Jensen on a fascinating research project focusing on the epigenetic regulation of germline genes and the transgenerational inheritance of silencing in C. elegans.
My passion lies in the field of epigenetics, synthetic and molecular biology, and protein biochemistry. I am deeply intrigued by the intricacies of genome organization and am dedicated to unraveling the "rules" that govern it. Additionally, I'm committed to dissecting the molecular and structural changes that take place within chromatin. -

Sarah Prodan
Assistant Professor of French and Italian
BioI am an Italianist, an early modernist and a Michelangelo scholar. My primary research and teaching contributions center on Italian literature and cultural history of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with a special focus on lyric poetry and on the relationship between literature and spirituality.
My first monograph, Michelangelo’s Christian Mysticism: Spirituality, Poetry and Art in Sixteenth-Century Italy (Cambridge University Press, 2014), was awarded the Jeanne and Aldo Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies by the Modern Language Association in 2013. Literary, cultural and historical in scope, this study considers the Florentine artist’s poetics and aesthetics in light of medieval and Renaissance Augustinianism, lay religious culture, and the Italian Reformation, respectively, to provide a more nuanced understanding of Michelangelo’s spirituality and how it functioned.
My current book project, Poetics of Piety in Early Modern Italy, builds on this earlier work to consider the ways in which male and female poets of devotional verse engaged the Word in text, image, and imagination in the sixteenth century. Combining diachronic and synchronic approaches to the study of early modern Italian verse, this project examines relations among religious practice and poetic form in the pre-Tridentine and post-Tridentine periods.
Other book-length projects include Friendship and Sociability in Premodern Europe: Contexts, Concepts and Expressions (Toronto: CRRS, 2014), a co-edited volume that explores ideas and instances of friendship in premodern Europe through a well-ordered series of investigations into amity in discrete social and cultural contexts related to some of the most salient moments and expressions of European history and civilization: the courtly love tradition, Renaissance humanism; the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation and the attendant confessionalization and wars of religion; Jesuit missions; the colonization of America; and lastly, expanding trade patterns in the Age of Discovery.
Prior to joining Stanford, I was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of History at Harvard University and at the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies at Victoria University in the University of Toronto, where I designed and taught early modern cultural history courses and lectured on Italian language and literature.
In parallel to my scholarly pursuits, I am completing a work of historical fiction inspired by my academic research. Taking the dramatic events of the French invasion of Italy in the fall of 1494 as its context, Imminence: Florence, 1494 recounts the riveting and tumultuous history of the dangerously divided Florentine city-state through the experiences of a lay female visionary temporarily resident in an elite nunnery tied to the highest echelons of political power. An imagined female story seamlessly inserted into a famously documented male history, Imminence weaves strands of verisimilitude with threads of reality, to offer a tapestry of fiction and non-fiction that touches on persistent human challenges – personal, social, and political. An exercise in empathic historical imagination, this novel explores women’s political, social, cultural, and religious history during the exciting and pivotal moment of the Italian Renaissance.

Adrienne Propp

BioI am a second year PhD student in ICME (the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering). Prior to Stanford, I was working as a technical analyst at the RAND Corporation where I spent most of my time designing microsimulations and other models to investigate topics in healthcare, education, disaster relief, and international relations.
My research interests fall broadly into the intersection of data and modeling. Past research projects have ranged from computational models of the heart to inverse modeling to predict satellite performance. At Stanford, I am exploring topics including uncertainty quantification, adaptive sampling, graph-informed neural networks, and geophysical modeling.
