    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsOur work is at the intersection of statistical genetics, psychiatry, and neuroscience. We use massive datasets and primarily computational approaches to identify mechanisms contributing to mental health problems like schizophrenia and depression. The overall goal of the lab is to discover fundamental information about psychiatric disorders, and ultimately to build more effective approaches to classification, prevention, and treatment.

    BioI started my training as a biologist at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) and the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas (IVIC). My Licentiate thesis degree advisor was Dr. Raúl Padrón, whom with I studied the structure and function of tarantula muscle, a key non-conventional animal model to understand muscle function in humans. Next, I would move to pursue doctoral studies at the University of Vermont, under Dr. David M. Warshaw supervision, studying the molecular mechanics of human cardiac myosin, the motor responsible for powering up the contractions of the human heart, the effect of multiple cardiomyopathy mutations, and the application of machine learning to enhance myosin single-molecule data analysis. Now, I've joined the lab of Dr. James Spudich at Stanford University, to continue pushing the frontiers of knowledge regarding the molecular physiology of human myosins in the context of heart disease.     BioRam's Doctoral background and academic interests are in the computational modeling of complex decisions, algorithm design and implementation, and data driven decision making. Outside of clinical work, his main competencies in this regard are software development, algorithm design and implementation, cost-effectiveness analysis, and decision analysis through computational models. He has also collaborated with industry to create and deploy operation specific software involving statistical computing and reasoning under inference. He has been practicing clinical Emergency Medicine in both community and academic settings for over 20 years.

    Current Research and Scholarly InterestsDr. Durmus' research focuses on applying micro/nano-technologies to investigate cellular heterogeneity for single-cell analysis and personalized medicine. At Stanford, she is developing platform technologies for sorting and monitoring cells at the single-cell resolution. This magnetic levitation-based technology is used for wide range of applications in medicine, such as, label-free detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood; high-throughput drug screening; and rapid detection and monitoring of antibiotic resistance in real-time. During her PhD, she has engineered nanoparticles and nanostructured surfaces to decrease antibiotic-resistant infections.

    BioEaton uses experiments and computational simulations to study the flow and heat transfer in complex turbulent flows, especially those relevant to turbomachinery, particle-laden flows, and separated flows, and to develop new techniques for precise control of gas and surface temperature during manufacturing processes.
