Samuel Montalvo
Postdoctoral Scholar, Cardiovascular Medicine
BioAs a clinical exercise physiologist, sport scientist, and biomechanist, I study the mechanical, physiological, and molecular determinants of human performance and health. I am certified as a Performance and Sport Scientist (CPSS), Strength and Conditioning Specialist with Distinction (CSCS,*D), and Clinical Exercise Physiologist.
I am a Postdoctoral Scholar in Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University and a member of the Stanford Bioinformatics Core and Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance. My training has been supported by the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance Postdoctoral Fellowship, the NIH T32 Research Training in Myocardial Biology at Stanford, and a two-year NIH/NHLBI Loan Repayment Program award in Research in Emerging Areas Critical to Human Health.
My research integrates clinical exercise physiology, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, biomechanics, and multi-omics to better understand how physical activity influences cardiovascular health, biological adaptation, and athletic performance. Through the NIH-funded Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC), I analyze large clinical, multi-omic, multi-tissue, multimodal, and multi-species datasets to identify mechanisms and biomarkers of exercise response.
I also collaborate on projects involving sports cardiology and electrocardiography, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, exercise and neuromuscular disease, and athlete performance, including work with Stanford Baseball and external sports-science collaborators.
I contribute to professional and institutional service as a Senior Editor for the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and Financial Officer of the Stanford University Postdoctoral Association (SURPAS).
Teaching and mentoring are central to my academic work. As a first-generation college graduate and Mexican American with Indigenous heritage, I am committed to creating supportive and inclusive pathways for trainees from underrepresented backgrounds. I serve as a Postdoctoral Mentoring Coach with the Stanford Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and medical trainees and residents through several Stanford programs and initiatives, including PRISM and the MAVERICs program within the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute.
My long-term goal is to lead an independent research program that combines exercise physiology, multi-omics, physical activity, nutrition, cardiovascular science, and sports performance while mentoring the next generation of scientists. -
Andrea Montanari
John D. and Sigrid Banks Professor and Professor of Mathematics
BioI am interested in developing efficient algorithms to make sense of large amounts of noisy data, extract information from observations, estimate signals from measurements. This effort spans several disciplines including statistics, computer science, information theory, machine learning.
I am also working on applications of these techniques to healthcare data analytics. -
Mercedes Montemayor Elosua
Doctor of Musical Arts Student, Musical Arts
BioMercedes Montemayor is a Mexican composer, multidisciplinary artist, and doctor of musical arts candidate at Stanford University. Her works manifest as electronic and electroacoustic music, sound Art, sound installation, and performance Art. She composes multichannel pieces for the stage and the listening room at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), from 3-7th order ambisonics. Also a film lover, she actively participates in the sound design and compositions of short films— and is now entering the world of scoring the feature film with LOUWRIEN WIJERS: from Competition to Compassion (2025). Her career launched with her collaboration with Mexican textile artist Miriam Medrez, in her intermedia installation Jardín Onírico (2022), followed by an internship at an Architectural Acoustics firm, and a performance in Mutek (2023) in Museo Anahuacall, in Mexico City with her debut album Volumina (2023).She studied Audio Engineering at Tecnológico De Monterrey and is in love with the process of mixing and mastering her work. Recently she's been reading Kierkegaard which is a considerable influence in her upcoming works, and continues to experiment with space to voice her experience as an experiencer.
