Felix Allum

BioI am a Postdoctoral Scholar affiliated with the PULSE institute and the LCLS Laser Science Division. My research interests focus on the ultrafast photodynamics of isolated molecules in the gas phase, as studied by a range of techniques typically incorporating charged particle imaging, photoionization spectroscopy or diffractive imaging. I am also interested in developing new approaches to studying ultrafast photochemistry, through, for instance, the generation of broad bandwidth optical pulses and new data analysis techniques to extract additional information from rich and complex datasets.
Prior to joining SLAC in October 2021, I studied for my PhD at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Mark Brouard. My doctoral research included a range of studies into ultrafast photodissociation dynamics using velocity-map imaging, both in a laboratory setting and at international FEL facilities. -

Maryam Amirahmadi
Postdoctoral Scholar, Cardiovascular Medicine
BioDr. Maryam Amirahmadi is a microsurgery expert and postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford Cardiovascular Institute. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Hamadan University of Medical Sciences. After more than a year of experience as a Family and Emergency Physician, she spent around 4 years at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences where she served as a pediatric and adult Cardiac Intensive Care physician and received training in cardiovascular surgery at Namazi and Faghihi hospitals. She then spent a year in the Department of Vascular Surgery at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, serving as a postdoctoral researcher and performing microsurgery on animals, with her research focused on therapeutic strategies to improve neovascularization after limb ischemia. Dr. Amirahmadi joined Stanford Cardiovascular Institute in 2022 where she is now a postdoctoral research fellow under the supervision of Prof. Philip S. Tsao, a renowned cardiovascular scientist. Her research interests and practical expertise include Microsurgery, and the effect of e-cigarette vaping on factors of inflammatory or immune pathways that can subsequently be related to the molecular mechanisms involved in angiogenesis and arteriogenesis in the murine model of hindlimb ischemia, as well as the mechanisms of e-cigarette and nicotine’s effects in augmenting Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) in rodent models of aortic aneurysm, including porcine pancreatic elastase-induced AAA. Dr. Maryam Amirahmadi and her colleagues are currently investigating the transgenerational effects of vaping/nicotine on abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) risk.

Rika Antonova
Postdoctoral Scholar, Computer Science
BioI am a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University and a recipient of the NSF/CRA Computing Innovation Fellowship. Currently, I work at the Interactive Perception and Robot Learning (IPRL) lab headed by Jeannette Bohg. In the summer of 2024, I will be transitioning to a faculty position at the University of Cambridge.
I completed my PhD work on data-efficient simulation-to-reality transfer at the Robotics, Perception and Learning lab at KTH (Stockholm, Sweden), working in the group headed by Danica Kragic. During my PhD, I also had an opportunity to intern at NVIDIA Robotics (Seattle, USA) and Microsoft Research (Cambridge, UK).
Previously, I was a Masters student at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, developing data-efficient approaches for learning controllers for bipedal locomotion (with Akshara Rai and Chris Atkeson). During my time at CMU, my MS advisor was Emma Brunskill, and in her group I also worked on developing reinforcement learning algorithms for education.
Prior to that, I was a software engineer at Google, first in the Search Personalization group and then in the Character Recognition team (developing open-source OCR engine Tesseract). -
Nur Arafeh Dalmau

BioI am currently a postdoc at UCLA and Stanford and an Honorary Fellow at The University of Queensland. I am a marine community ecologist and marine spatial planner. My research focuses on understanding the impacts of marine heatwaves on kelp forest ecosystems. I also research the role of marine protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures for providing climate resilience and designing networks of climate-smart marine protected areas. I support conservation initiatives with NGOs, parks, and fishers, and teach decision tools such as Marxan. My heart remains in my beautiful Costa Brava, Spain (Catalonia), where I do my best to support conservation. I am a naive dreamer, and I know future generations will dive into healthy kelp forests and thriving marine ecosystems.

BioMarta holds a PhD in pharmaceutical technology and an Executive MBA. She is passionate about healthcare research and innovation and has several years of experience in leading R&D projects within the pharmaceutical industry. Prior to joining Stanford Biodesign, Marta worked at CIMTI which is an accelerator for health startups that supports innovators to develop and implement solutions that improve healthcare quality and patient outcomes.
Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a strong track record of successfully translating research and innovation into real-world impact. She is a curious, creative, and open-minded person who is always seeking to solve complex problems in order to make a positive impact on patients’ lives. In her current role as Innovation Fellow at Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, she is part of a team working on developing innovative solutions to address unmet needs in healthcare. -
Mansur Arief

BioI am a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford Intelligent Systems Lab (SISL). I received my Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon in 2023 and a master's degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Much of my work combines machine learning and rare-event theories to efficiently simulate rare catastrophic events. The applications of this line of work include the accelerated testing of intelligent systems. Currently, I am working on AI for safety and sustainability projects, which merge efficient simulation frameworks with optimization and decision-making algorithms.

Ronan Arthur

BioRonan Arthur (PhD) is a postdoctoral scholar in the Stanford School of Medicine and in the Department of Biology. Ronan studies adaptive behavior and community trust during epidemics through mathematical modeling techniques and empirical work in Liberia. Current research includes: hospital hand hygiene in Liberia; hospital ventilation in rural Liberia; adaptive behavior during epidemics with age-structure; quantifying gene-culture co-evolution; trust of government and health system during COVID-19 in Liberia; and agent-based modeling of COVID-19 and Ebola Virus Disease.

Adel Asadi
Postdoctoral Scholar, Earth and Planetary Sciences
BioAdel Asadi is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, in the Doerr School of Sustainability. He is an affiliate member of the Mineral-X Initiative, a program dedicated to pioneering sustainable critical minerals exploration to facilitate the transition to green energy. Under the supervision of Prof. Jef Caers, Adel's research is focused on mineral exploration, leveraging data science tools and artificial intelligence algorithms. Through the integrated geological data analysis, his goal is to enhance the predictive accuracy of models for discovering high-grade mineral deposits, thereby enabling decision-making with higher certainty.
Before joining Stanford University, Adel was a Postdoctoral Scholar at Tufts University in Massachusetts. There, he conducted research in natural hazards and renewable energy domains. Under Prof. Laurie Baise’s supervision, he developed a novel ensemble machine learning method to assess earthquake-induced soil liquefaction hazards, notably for the 2023 Türkiye Earthquakes. Under Prof. Babak Moaveni’s supervision, in a project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), he exploited multiple-point geostatistics to simulate offshore wind speed and direction in a multi-variate context, using numerical weather models, remote sensing, observational, and geospatial data.
Adel Asadi earned his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a Geosystems specialization from Tufts University. His doctoral work in the Geohazards Research Lab involved a diverse toolkit (computer vision, machine learning, remote sensing, and geographic information systems) to model earthquake-induced ground failure hazards (soil liquefaction) and map post-earthquake ground failure damages (landslides and liquefaction) on global, regional, and event-specific scales. His dissertation research was funded by the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGIA).
During his Master's study in Mining Engineering at Michigan Technological University, under Prof. Snehamoy Chatterjee’s supervision, he developed a novel multiple-point geostatistical simulation algorithm for Earth resources modeling and uncertainty quantification. He also worked on a space mining research project aimed at mapping iron and titanium on the lunar surface using remote sensing data and machine learning algorithms. Additionally, he gained one year of professional experience in the copper mining industry through three internships at Freeport-McMoRan Inc. in Arizona. -
Negar Asadian

BioDedicated to unraveling the mysteries of the nervous system, I am a versatile neuroscientist with extensive expertise spanning from cellular and molecular biology to in vivo experimentation.
My academic journey began with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry. Subsequently, I pursued a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Melbourne University, focusing on uncovering novel treatments for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) by targeting the TAM receptor pathway.
As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Stanford University's Department of Neurobiology, I am currently investigating the role of the cerebellum in learning and memory. Utilizing innovative methodologies such as magnetic eye tracking and in vivo electrophysiology, my aim is to decipher the neural mechanisms underlying cerebellum-dependent learning and its modulation through experience (plasticity).
Beyond research, I am committed to fostering scientific advancement and education. I have mentored students at both Stanford University and the Florey Institute, served as the Students Of Florey Institute's Education Officer, chaired symposium sessions, and contributed to various scientific presentations.
Prior to my academic endeavors, I served as a Medical Laboratory Scientist at Melbourne Pathology, where I honed clinical laboratory skills and leadership abilities.

BRIGHT ASARE-BEDIAKO

BioDr. Asare-Bediako is a Ghanaian-trained Optometrist who started his career as a Teaching/Research Assistant at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. He obtained a doctorate degree in Vision Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, US, where he worked on animal models of diabetic retinopathy and hematopoiesis in Prof. Maria Grant’s lab. Currently, he is a postdoctoral scholar in Prof. Mary Elizabeth Hartnett’s lab studying retinopathy of prematurity. His current interests lie in understanding mechanisms of angiogenesis in retinopathy of prematurity and diabetic retinopathy.
