Esa Rasanen
Affiliate, Cardiovascular Institute Operations
BioI am a Professor of Physics at Tampere University with a background in quantum physics and dynamics, and broad experience in multidisciplinary research at the interface of physics, engineering, and medical sciences. My work has increasingly focused on computational cardiology, electrocardiography, and physiological signal analysis, where our team develops algorithms and software for extracting clinically meaningful information from complex biosignals. I have been involved in both academic research and applied innovation, including clinical validation studies and technology translation in healthcare and wearables. I am particularly interested in problems where rigorous physical modeling, data-driven methods, and real-world medical applications intersect.

Vaughn Rasberry
Associate Professor of English and of African and African American Studies
BioVaughn Rasberry studies African American literature, global Cold War culture, the European Enlightenment and its critics, postcolonial theory, and philosophical theories of modernity. As a Fulbright scholar in 2008-09, he taught in the American Studies department at the Humboldt University Berlin and lectured on African American literature throughout Germany. His current book project, Race and the Totalitarian Century, questions the notion that desegregation prompted African American writers and activists to acquiesce in the normative claims of postwar liberalism. Challenging accounts that portray black cultural workers in various postures of reaction to larger forces--namely U.S. liberalism or Soviet communism--his project argues instead that many writers were involved in a complex national and global dialogue with totalitarianism, the defining geopolitical discourse of the twentieth century.
His article, "'Now Describing You': James Baldwin and Cold War Liberalism," appears in an edited volume titled James Baldwin: America and Beyond (University of Michigan Press, 2011). A review essay, "Black Cultural Politics at the End of History," appears in the winter 2012 issue of American Literary History. An article, "Invoking Totalitarianism: Liberal Democracy versus the Global Jihad in Boualem Sansal's The German Mujahid," appears in the spring 2014 special issue of Novel: a Forum on Fiction. For Black History Month, he published an op-ed essay, "The Shape of African American Geopolitics," in Al Jazeera English.
An Annenberg Faculty Fellow at Stanford (2012-14), he has also received fellowships from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Humanities Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
Vaughn also teaches in collaboration with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE) and the programs in Modern Thought and Literature, African and African American Studies, and American Studies. -

Fatemeh Sadat Rassouli
Sample Preparation Laboratory Manager, Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability - Dean's Office
BioI am the Sample Preparation Lab Manager at Stanford University’s Doerr School of Sustainability, where my role combines laboratory management, research support, and ongoing scientific research. My work includes developing and maintaining laboratory capabilities for the preparation and processing of rocks, minerals, soils, sediments, and other Earth materials, as well as supporting researchers and students with experimental workflows and laboratory methods.
I earned my Ph.D. in Geophysics from Stanford University in 2017 and my M.S. in Geophysics and Seismology from Stanford in 2015. My research has focused on the time-dependent mechanical behavior of geomaterials, particularly the creep and viscoplastic deformation of carbonate rocks and clay-rich shales under different reservoir conditions and across multiple scales. As a postdoctoral researcher in Stanford’s Department of Geophysics from 2018 to 2020, I extended this work to investigate the thermo-viscoplastic behavior of shale rocks.
I also hold an M.S. in Mining Engineering from the University of Tehran, where I investigated the creep behavior of soft rocks, including salts, mudrocks, and tuffs, using impression creep testing. I conducted this experimental research at the University of Tehran, Tokai University in Japan, and Toyota National College of Technology. In addition, I hold a master’s degree in Education, complementing my scientific background with formal training in teaching and education. -
Fayed Rassoulou
Postdoctoral Scholar, Neurology and Neurological Sciences
BioFayed obtained a PhD in Psychology from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, where he worked in the Institute for Clinical Neuroscience and Medical Psychology under Dr. Jan Hirschmann, and a BSc and MSc in Cognitive Science from Université Lumière Lyon 2, France. His dissertation research combined magnetoencephalography (MEG) and deep brain local field potential (LFP) recordings with machine learning to identify electrophysiological signatures that predict which deep brain stimulation (DBS) contacts will provide the greatest clinical benefit for individuals with Parkinson's disease, with the goal of reducing the time required for clinical DBS programming. His postdoctoral work at Stanford with Dr. Helen Bronte-Stewart focuses on cognitive-motor symptoms, gait impairment, and freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease. He combines subthalamic nucleus LFP dynamics, DBS lead localization, and modeling of the volume of tissue activated by stimulation with deep learning-based decoding to better understand and ultimately improve adaptive deep brain stimulation for gait.
