Developing a Vulnerability Index Model in Mexico to Forecast Negative Health Outcomes (Scholarly Concentration Project)
Equitable allocation of limited public health resources relies on harnessing large quantities of data to map and predict where resources are most needed. I adapted the CDC's methodology to develop their Social Vulnerability Index to determine relative state-level disease burden risk in MX using demographic, health, economic, and novel environmental indicators. I hypothesized environmental conditions contribute to the disease burden. I also used a correlation analysis to assess the eight experimental VIMs' ability to forecast state-level disease burdens. Demographic variables best indicated 2020 COVID-19 burden (p=0.01), and environmental variables best indicated 2020 noncommunicable disease burden (p=0.01). Overall, environmental variables only improved the reference model's ability to predict adverse health outcomes. Our novel MX VIM predicted burden across relevant metrics and provided guidance in global regions with greater vulnerability, thus better informing long-term limited resource allocation for global health.
