Dr. Mahnoosh (Mona) Sharifi joined the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford in September 2026 and serves as Chief of the Division of General Pediatrics. She is a primary care pediatrician, board certified in both pediatrics and clinical informatics, and a health services researcher and implementation scientist focused on studying the implementation of interventions in primary care and community-based settings to prevent chronic diseases, promote healthy behaviors for all children, and improve outcomes, particularly in childhood obesity. Her research examines how to design, implement, evaluate, and scale interventions across clinical and community settings. She integrates health services research, implementation science, and clinical informatics to evaluate care delivery and conduct pragmatic clinical trials testing scalable strategies that enable clinicians to deliver effective, equitable care across diverse real-world settings. Her overarching aim is to accelerate the translation of evidence into routine practice and to strengthen the role of pediatric primary care in addressing lifelong cardiometabolic risk. Dr. Sharifi is a co-author of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2023 clinical practice guidelines on childhood obesity and recently led two successful NIH R01-funded multi-site trials studying the dissemination and implementation of guideline-recommended pediatric obesity care. She currently leads two new NIH-funded pragmatic trials studying the implementation of family-based interventions to prevent and treat obesity in children. Her scholarship encompasses complementary questions that deepen understanding of the field: the acceleration of evidence into practice using EHR-based clinical decision support and other implementation strategies, the cost-]effectiveness of pediatric obesity interventions, the role of neighborhood and structural factors in obesity disparities, and qualitative and mixed-methods investigations of patient and clinician perspectives on care. Since 2010, her research has been continuously supported by the NIH, AHRQ, PCORI, and CDC.

Dr. Sharifi received her B.S. in Economics and Biology from Emory University, her M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and her M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed her pediatric residency in the Boston Combined Pediatric Residency Program. After formal training in health services, public health, and patient-centered outcomes research as part of the AHRQ T32-funded Harvard-wide Pediatric Health Services Research Fellowship and an K12 scholars’ program at Harvard, she completed a K08 career development award to develop further expertise in the field of implementation science and clinical informatics. She has extensive experience guiding and collaborating with transdisciplinary teams, successfully leading numerous studies that incorporate qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, and economic evaluation methodologies.

She prioritizes mentoring and supporting the career development of students, trainees, and junior faculty in her roles as Chief of General Pediatrics at Stanford and Co-Director of the Academic Pediatric Association’s Continuity Research Network (CORNET), a pediatric primary care practice-based research network involving academic primary care practices nationwide. Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, she served as Chief of General Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine and the inaugural Director of Pediatric Health Services and Implementation Research, Co-Director of the National Clinician Scholars Program at Yale, and Director of the Yale Scholars in Implementation Science, an NIH/NHLBI-funded K12 career development award program to train junior investigators in implementation science.
