Field-tuned ferroquadrupolar quantum phase transition in the insulator TmVO4.
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America
2022; 119 (28): e2119942119
Abstract
We report results of low-temperature heat-capacity, magnetocaloric-effect, and neutron-diffraction measurements of TmVO4, an insulator that undergoes a continuous ferroquadrupolar phase transition associated with local partially filled 4f orbitals of the thulium (Tm[Formula: see text]) ions. The ferroquadrupolar transition, a realization of Ising nematicity, can be tuned to a quantum critical point by using a magnetic field oriented along the c axis of the tetragonal crystal lattice, which acts as an effective transverse field for the Ising-nematic order. In small magnetic fields, the thermal phase transition can be well described by using a semiclassical mean-field treatment of the transverse-field Ising model. However, in higher magnetic fields, closer to the field-tuned quantum phase transition, subtle deviations from this semiclassical behavior are observed, which are consistent with expectations of quantum fluctuations. Although the phase transition is driven by the local 4f degrees of freedom, the crystal lattice still plays a crucial role, both in terms of mediating the interactions between the local quadrupoles and in determining the critical scaling exponents, even though the phase transition itself can be described via mean field. In particular, bilinear coupling of the nematic order parameter to acoustic phonons changes the spatial and temporal fluctuations of the former in a fundamental way, resulting in different critical behavior of the nematic transverse-field Ising model, as compared to the usual case of the magnetic transverse-field Ising model. Our results establish TmVO4 as a model material and electronic nematicity as a paradigmatic example for quantum criticality in insulators.

An apparatus for studying scintillator properties at high isostatic pressures
REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS
2013; 84 (1)
Abstract
We describe the design and operation of a unique hydraulic press for the study of scintillator materials under isostatic pressure. This press, capable of developing a pressure of a gigapascal, consists of a large sample chamber pressurized by a two-stage hydraulic amplifier. The optical detection of the scintillation light emitted by the sample is performed, through a large aperture optical port, by a photodetector located outside the pressure vessel. In addition to providing essential pressure-dependent studies on the emission characteristics of radioluminescent materials, this apparatus is being developed to elucidate the mechanisms behind the recently observed dependency of light-yield nonproportionality on electronic band structure. The variation of the light output of a Tl:CsI crystal under 511-keV gamma excitation and hydrostatic pressure is given as an example.

High-Throughput Combinatorial Database of Electronic Band Structures for Inorganic Scintillator Materials
ACS COMBINATORIAL SCIENCE
2011; 13 (4): 382-390
Abstract
For the purpose of creating a database of electronic structures of all the known inorganic compounds, we have developed a computational framework based on high-throughput ab initio calculations (AFLOW) and an online repository (www.aflowlib.org). In this article, we report the first step of this task: the calculation of band structures for 7439 compounds intended for the research of scintillator materials for γ-ray radiation detection. Data-mining is performed to select the candidates from 193,456 compounds compiled in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database. Light yield and scintillation nonproportionality are predicted based on semiempirical band gaps and effective masses. We present a list of materials, potentially bright and proportional, and focus on those exhibiting small effective masses and effective mass ratios.

Waveguides formed by incoherent dark solitons
OPTICS LETTERS
1999; 24 (16): 1160-1162
Abstract
We demonstrate experimentally optical guidance of coherent light beams, using incoherent light. Such guidance is made possible by generation of partially spatially incoherent self-trapped dark beams (dark incoherent solitons) in a noninstantaneous nonlinear medium. In the one-dimensional case, the incoherent solitons induce single and Y-junction planar waveguides, whereas in the two-dimensional case, they form circular waveguides. These experiments introduce the possibility of controlling high-power laser beams with low-power incoherent light sources such as LED's or lightbulbs.

16-mu m infrared generation by difference-frequency mixing in diffusion-bonded-stacked GaAs
OPTICS LETTERS
1998; 23 (13): 1010-1012
Abstract
Tunable 90-ps 15.6-17.6-microm coherent radiation was generated by means of difference-frequency mixing in diffusion-bonded-stacked GaAs. The sample consisted of 24 alternately rotated layers with a total length of 6 mm and with low optical loss to achieve third-order quasi-phase matching. The wavelength-tuning curve was close to the theoretical prediction, demonstrating that the bonding process maintained nonlinear optical phase matching over the entire interaction length. Maximum conversion efficiency of 0.7%, or 5% internal quantum efficiency, was measured at 16.6 microm, consistent with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract
In Ref. 1, the first full sentence in the right-hand column of p. 1608 should read as: 'Although BBO is phase matchable down to 187 nm and shorter in this configuration without a very large (2-4 degrees ) change in theta (and hence in d(eff)), and B2 is also suitable to accommodate the phase matching, tunability below 187.9 nm becomes limited by the exponential increase in crystal absorption.'

Generation of tunable 187.9-196-nm radiation in beta-Ba2BO4
OPTICS LETTERS
1997; 22 (21): 1606-1608
Abstract
Tunable 187.9-196-nm vacuum-ultraviolet radiation was generated at room temperature in a beta barium borate crystal by sum-frequency mixing of Nd:YAG laser radiation and the second harmonic of a dye laser pumped by the second harmonic of the same Nd:YAG laser. By use of the advantageous noncollinear phase-matching configuration, a peak power of 1.3 kW was obtained at 194 nm with input power densities as low as 79MW/cm(2) for 1064-nm and 0.65MW/cm(2) for 237.3-nm radiation.

Observation and thermal fixing of holographic gratings in lead barium niobate crystal
OPTICS LETTERS
1997; 22 (3): 187-189
Abstract
We report what we believe to be the first observation of photorefractive gratings in lead barium niobate (Pb(1-x)Ba (x)Nb(2)O>( 6) ; PBN). A diffraction efficiency of 9% and a beam-coupling coefficient of 9 cm(-1) are obtained. After thermal fixing a grating of 0.5% is revealed at room temperature. We can improve this diffraction efficiency by optimizing fixing temperature, timing, and material parameters.

PHOTOREFRACTIVE-DAMAGE-RESISTANT ZN-DIFFUSED WAVE-GUIDES IN MGO-LINBO3
OPTICS LETTERS

Abstract
Planar waveguides were fabricated by diffusing Zn into MgO:LiNbO(3) and LiNbO(3). Zn-diffused waveguides in MgO:LiNbO(3) guide both the ordinary and extraordinary polarization and have propagation losses at 633 nm in the range of 0.4-1.2 dB/cm. Single-beam-induced in-plane scattering due to photorefractive damage was not observed at 515 nm up to intensities of as much as 90 kW/cm(2).

SUPERCONDUCTING BI-CA-SR-CU-O FIBERS GROWN BY THE LASER-HEATED PEDESTAL GROWTH METHOD
SCIENCE
1988; 240 (4859): 1642-1645
Abstract
Superconducting fibers of several compositions including the nominal composition Bi(2)CaSrCu(2)O(8) have been grown by means of the laser-heated pedestal growth method. The influence of starting composition and growth conditions on structure and superconducting properties is discussed. The a-b planes of the material are parallel to the fiber axis (along the growth direction), providing the ideal condition for conduction along the copper-oxygen planes.

2ND HARMONIC-GENERATION AND ACCURATE INDEX OF REFRACTION MEASUREMENTS IN FLUX-GROWN KTIOPO4
APPLIED OPTICS
1987; 26 (12): 2390-2394
Abstract
Accurate index of refraction measurements have been performed in flux-grown KTiOPO(4). These measurements give good agreement between experiment and theory for angle phase matching in Type II second harmonic generation at 1.064 microm. These refractive-index data have allowed us to calculate the propagation angles for second harmonic generation at wavelengths of interest other than 1.064 microm such as 1.34 microm. Type II second harmonic energy conversion efficiency of 1.064 micro m of up to 59% in this material has also been demonstrated with higher efficiencies possible. Limits to conversion efficiency are discussed.
