Selene’s research focuses on understanding how stress and early-life experiences shape the neural circuits involved in opioid addiction and relapse. Her previous work examined how stress-related changes in brain reward circuits can increase vulnerability to opioid seeking following abstinence. This work inspired a broader interest in how dopamine and opioid signaling interact to influence addictive behaviors. Her current research investigates how ibogaine affects the neural systems associated with opioid addiction and explores whether understanding its mechanisms could contribute to developing more effective treatments for opioid use disorder.
