    Abstract

We report clear experimental evidence for second harmonic generation at hard x-ray wavelengths. Using a 1.7 Å pumping beam generated by a free electron laser, we observe second harmonic generation in diamond. The generated second harmonic is of order 10 times the background radiation, scales quadratically with pump pulse energy, and is generated over a narrow phase-matching condition. Of importance for future experiments, our results indicate that it is possible to observe nonlinear x-ray processes in crystals at pump intensities exceeding 1016  W/cm2.

    Abstract

Light-matter interactions are ubiquitous, and underpin a wide range of basic research fields and applied technologies. Although optical interactions have been intensively studied, their microscopic details are often poorly understood and have so far not been directly measurable. X-ray and optical wave mixing was proposed nearly half a century ago as an atomic-scale probe of optical interactions but has not yet been observed owing to a lack of sufficiently intense X-ray sources. Here we use an X-ray laser to demonstrate X-ray and optical sum-frequency generation. The underlying nonlinearity is a reciprocal-space probe of the optically induced charges and associated microscopic fields that arise in an illuminated material. To within the experimental errors, the measured efficiency is consistent with first-principles calculations of microscopic optical polarization in diamond. The ability to probe optical interactions on the atomic scale offers new opportunities in both basic and applied areas of science.

    Abstract

We experimentally and theoretically study the coincidence count rate for down-converted x-ray photons. Because of photoionization, parametric down-conversion at x-ray wavelengths generally involves loss and the theoretical description requires a Langevin approach. By working in a transmission geometry (Laue) rather than in the Bragg geometry of previous experiments, we obtain an improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of 12.5, and find agreement between experiment and theory.

  • Generation and Compression of Chirped Biphotons PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS Sensarn, S., Yin, G. Y., Harris, S. E. 2010; 104 (25)

    Abstract

We describe an experiment demonstrating the radarlike technique of "chirp and compress." Chirped biphotons are generated using a quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystal where the phase-matched frequency varies linearly with position. Sum frequency generation is used to measure the amplitude of the biphoton wave function. As compared to a nonchirped crystal, compression and an increase in summing efficiency of a factor of 5 is observed.

    Abstract

We demonstrate a new type of quantum mechanical correlation where phase modulators at distant locations, acting on the photons of an entangled pair, interfere to determine the apparent depth of modulation. When the modulators have the same phase, the modulation depth doubles; when oppositely phased, the modulators negate each other.

Following the experiments of Shverdin and colleagues [Phys. Rev. Abstract

The use of transgenic animals in biomedical research is increasing rapidly and may be the best means of determining gene function. Generating transgenic animals typically requires time-consuming screening processes, and gene function is assessed by an array of difficult phenotypic and biochemical assays performed ex vivo. To address the unmet need in transgenic research for functional assays performed with ease in living animals, we demonstrate here that in vivo detection of luciferase enzyme as a transcriptional reporter facilitates rapid screening for both the presence and function of transgenes in intact living mice. Using this approach we identified three bioluminescent transgenic founders where the transgene consisted of the heme oxygenase promoter fused to the modified coding sequence of the luciferase gene. These founders were identified from 183 pups and confirmed by PCR analysis. Identification of HO-1-luc homozygotes from back- crossed F2 littermates was then accelerated by in vivo imaging. In another transgenic mouse line, where the transgene was comprised of the bone morphogenic-4 (BMP4) promoter fused to the modified luciferase gene, we were able to identify transgenic animals and in each line we were able to visualize patterns of expression in living animals over time. The light production from these transgenic mice indicated that the desired DNA fragment was functional and different expression profiles apparent at different ages and after gene induction.

  • Subfemtosecond pulse generation by rotational molecular modulation OPTICS LETTERS Sokolov, A. V., Yavuz, D. D., Harris, S. E. 1999; 24 (8): 557-559

    Abstract

We extend a recent suggestion for the generation of subfemtosecond pulses by molecular modulation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 2894 (1998)] to the rotational spectrum of molecular hydrogen (H(2)) . When a rotational transition |a? ? |b? is strongly driven (|rho(ab) |=0.5) the generation and phase-slip lengths are of the same order and the Raman spectrum has approximately Bessel function sideband amplitudes. Numerical simulation predicts that this spectrum (generated in a 14-cm-long cell at 1-atm pressure of H(2)) will compress into a train of pulses with 94-fs pulse separation and a pulse length of 0.5 fs.

    Abstract

We describe an optical parametric oscillator that is pumped by population-trapped atoms that are prepared with maximum coherence. The oscillator is based on the use of an effective nonlinear susceptibility that is of the same order as the linear susceptibility. Because the parametric gain is obtained in a single coherence length, the gain bandwidth can exceed the degenerate frequency. In Pb vapor the calculated gain is maximized at 1.88 microm and has a bandwidth of ~7500 cm(-1).

    Abstract

A suggestion for the generation of extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) laser radiation based on tunneling ionization and subsequent electron excitation of Deltan not equal 0 transitions is described. The favorable scaling of the required intensity of the pump laser with the output XUV wavelength is compared with that exhibited by XUV lasers ased on Deltan = 0 transitions. Calculations for Be-like Ne predict signif icant gain at 14.1 nm.

    Abstract

Strong extreme-ultraviolet fluorescence originating from core-excited autoionizing levels of neutral Rb is observed. Radiative branching ratios approaching unity are inferred from the radiative yields. Long autoionizing lifetimes and fast radiative rates make these levels promising candidates for extreme-ultraviolet laser systems.

    Abstract

We report the observation of laser gain in the vacuum ultraviolet pumped by super Coster-Kronig decay. Using a 5-J, 300-psec pump pulse of 1064-nm radiation, we have observed gain on transitions in Zn III at 127.0, 130.6, and 131.9 nm with total gains of exp(2.4), exp(5.1), and exp(3.2), respectively. The large branching ratios of the rapid super Coster-Kronig decay into a small number of final levels makes high-efficiency operation possible.

    Abstract

We describe the construction and operation of a 109-nm, photoionization-pumped, single-pass laser in Xe III. The laser is pumped by soft x rays emitted from a laser-produced plasma in a traveling-wave geometry. Using a 3.5-J, 300-psec, 1064-nm laser pump pulse, we measure a small-signal gain coefficient of 4.4 cm(-1) and a total small-signal gain of exp(40). The laser is fully saturated and produces an output energy of 20 microJ in a beam with 10-mrad divergence.

    Abstract

We report extensive measurements of gain in the Xe III system initially observed by Kapteyn et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 57, 2939 (1986)]. The dependence of this gain on pressure, pumping-pulse length, and pump energy is presented. By optimizing these parameters we have achieved a gain of exp(3.2) by using only 0.56 J of 1064-nm energy on target, representing an efficiency improvement of nearly 100. Total gains as high as exp(6.6) have been measured when using higher energies. Our data indicate that effective laser-produced plasmas can be created with applied power densities as low as 5 x 10(10) W cm(-2).

    Abstract

Experimental observation of a laser-induced dipole-quadrupole collision between Sr and Ca is reported. The laser-induced collision cross section peaks at an applied photon energy equal to the energy defect of the initial and final states of the infinitely separated atoms. A cross section of 3 x 10(-14) cm(2) was induced at a laser-power density of 7 x 10(9) W/cm(2); the linewidth was 20 cm(-1).

    Abstract

We report the observation of atomic-pair absorption in barium and in barium-thallium vapors using a white-light source. At atomic densities on the order of 10(17) atoms/cm(3) we measure absorptions of 2.9% cm(-1) for Ba-Ba and 2.3% cm(-1) for Ba-TI. In both cases, the absorption maxima occur at the predicted (R = infinity) wavelength and have a full width at half maximum of approximately 15 cm(-1).

    Abstract

We describe a high-resolution, vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopic technique based on a tunable, narrow-band, VUV, spontaneous anti-Stokes light source. The technique was used to measure the absolute energies of the 1s2s (1)S(0) states of (3)He and (4)He; the 1s2s (1)S(0) level of (3)He is 7.8 +/- 0.5 cm(-1) below that of (4)He.
