Current Role at Stanford

As the Lead Storage Facility Worker at Stanford Auxiliary Library 3, I oversee warehousing operations encompassing a 70,000 square foot high security, environmentally controlled, high-density storage facility that currently is home for 4.8 million items, consuming 33,000 locations on almost 6 acres. Currently lead a team of five union workers that preform shipping, receiving, transportation and inventory control operations that support the movement of inventory with cultural and historical relevance to the Stanford community and the world at large. Oversee inventory movement into and out of the operation to ensure inventory security, integrity and preservation of fragile items.

    The Western Regional Storage Trust (WEST) is a distributed, retrospective print journal repository program. Under the WEST program, participating libraries consolidate and validate print journal backfiles at major library storage facilities and at selected campus locations. Print journal titles are fit into one of three WEST Categories: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The categories represent the level of archiving effort agreed upon by WEST participants.

    Stanford is a WEST Archive Builder/Holder. Stanford has committed to maintain and participate in the WEST repository program through December 31, 2035.

    Stanford holds journal titles in all three WEST categories. Gold and Silver titles are held at SAL3 and can only be paged to Green Library. Bronze level titles are held at SAL3 and at campus branches.

Service, Volunteer and Community Work

  • Shop Steward University Libraries, Service Employees International Union Local 2007 (January 1, 2010 - Present)

    As a member of Service Employees International Union, Local 2007 (SEIU 2007)and elected by my co-workers, I volunteer my time to provide representation for bargaining unit members for matters related to wages, benefits and working conditions. Duties of a Shop Steward generally include informing the workers of their rights under the collective bargaining agreement (CBA); monitoring and enforcing the provisions of the CBA; and ensuring employer compliance with federal, state and local laws. Additionally, when an employee is believed to have violated company policy or the CBA, the steward duties are to represent and defend bargaining unit employees in investigatory interviews (in accord with employees’ Weingarten Rights), that are reasonably expected to result in disciplinary action, and through the grievance procedure. Other responsibilities include:

    - Attending training programs, conferences and seminars designed to fully educate shop stewards in workplace law

    - Serving as a facilitator and mediator between management and union members.

    - Being available to hear grievances by employees and working with the employer to resolve them.

    - Writing up, filing, and investigating an employee's grievance.

    - Maintaining files and records.

    - Holding monthly meetings for members to update them on any union issues and developments affecting the collective bargaining unit.

    - Alerting union leaders of any issues, problems, or developments within the collective bargaining unit.

    - Recruiting and welcoming new members to the union.
